Netflix reveals details about Lady Gaga on 'Wednesday,' 'Squid Game' and 'Stranger Things' finales
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Netflix flexed its Hollywood star power with a live event where it unveiled details about its upcoming slate of streaming offerings, including Lady Gaga being cast as a teacher on 'Wednesday," and release dates for the final episodes of hits 'Squid Game' and 'Stranger Things.'
The streaming giant assembled actors including Jenna Ortega, Oscar Isaac, Lee Jung-jae, Drew Starkey, Sofia Carson, Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for its annual Tudum event Saturday in Inglewood, Calif. Musical performances bookended the show, with Hanumankind opening with 'Run It Up' and Gaga closing with a medley and the announcement of her latest acting gig.
The event is named 'Tudum' after the audio cue that accompanies the Netflix's N logo in its trailers and at the start of its programming.
'Squid Game' Season 3
A bloody trailer for the final season of 'Squid Game' accompanied the announcement that the show's third season will begin streaming June 27. The South Korean series about a brutal competition where adults face death while playing children's games was one of the pandemic's breakout hits and made an international star of Lee Jung-jae, who became the first Asian man to win an Emmy for best drama actor.
'Stranger Things' final episodes
The fifth and final season of 'Stranger Things' will be parceled out over the winter holidays, with four episodes dropping Nov. 26, three more on Christmas Day and the series finale premiering New Year's Eve. A new trailer highlights the history of the Duffer brothers' nostalgia-soaked sci-fi, which over the past nine years has made stars out of Millie Bobby Brown, Sadie Sink, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour and Finn Wolfhard. The trailer teases a final confrontation with Vecna, concluding with Noah Schnapp's Will Byers' character yelling 'RUN!'
'Wednesday'
Netflix unveiled the first six minutes of the second season of 'Wednesday,' featuring Ortega's Wednesday Addams getting a helping hand from Thing as she confronts a serial killer played by Haley Joel Osment. Gaga's first acting gig since last year's 'Joker: Folie a Deux' will be playing teacher Rosaline Rotwood at Addams' school Nevermore. The first part of 'Wednesday' season 2 lands on Aug. 6, and the second half will be released Sept. 3.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Kentucky Derby runner-up and Preakness winner Journalism opened as the 8-5 favorite in the Belmont Stakes when post positions were drawn Monday for the final leg of the Triple Crown. Derby winner Sovereignty was set as the second choice on the morning line at odds of 2-1 and drew the No. 2 post. Journalism, near the outside with the No. 7 post, is the only horse running in all three Triple Crown races. 'He's been kind of the same horse since July of last summer,' trainer Michael McCarthy said. 'He does everything you'd ask a good horse to do: He eats well, trains well, acts well. I thought through the last six, seven weeks here, his energy's been the same throughout.' Sovereignty is back after owners and trainer Bill Mott opted to skip the Preakness and run the Belmont on five weeks of rest, and things have gone swimmingly since he arrived at historic Saratoga Race Couse. 'We've been very lucky with everything that's gone on sine he's been here,' Mott said. 'He's been moving well over the track.' Sovereignty and Journalism in the field set up this Belmont, the second at Saratoga while renovations are made to its usual home on Long Island, to be a rematch between the first two Triple Crown winners who were also first and second the Derby. 'He's improved, as I think as many of these horses have,' Mott said of Sovereignty. 'I think this entire group, if you look at their form and the way they've developed over the course of this year, I think they've made steady progress and it should be an interesting race.' No. 6 Baeza, who finished third in Kentucky on the first Saturday in May, opened at 4-1. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's Rodriguez, who was scratched from the Derby because of a minor foot bruise and held out of the Preakness, was next at 6-1 and will leave the starting gate from the No. 3 post. The field of eight horses also includes No. 8 Heart of Honor, tied for the longest shot on the board at 30-1 after finishing fifth in the Preakness. New to the Triple Crown trail are No. 1 Hill Road (10-1), No. 5 Crudo (15-1) and No. 4 Uncaged (30-1). Journalism, who was favorited in the Derby and the Preakness and at the moment is the top 3-year-old in the country, looks like the horse to beat. 'Saratoga is very good for horses,' McCarthy said. Marc Maron had a typically succinct three-word response to the news that he will end his WTF podcast in the announced the news on the June 2 episode of his long-running show, which featured an interview with John Mulaney. 'WTF will turn 16 years old on September 1. Sixteen years, it's a long time. It's a long time to do anything,' Maron said during the show's opening. 'All of a sudden, you're old and you realize you've been doing something for a long time. This started in the old garage. No one knew what a podcast was. I was coming out of a horrendous divorce. I was wanting to figure out how to continue living my life. Things were not looking good for me,' he recalled. Simply put, Maron said: 'We're burnt out.''We have put up a new show every Monday and Thursday for almost 16 years and we're tired,' he explained. 'And we're utterly satisfied with the work we've done.' 'When Brendan and I started this thing, all we knew was that we were going to do it every Monday and Thursday. And there was no way to make money. There was no way that we knew how to build an audience or anything. We were doing it in the garage in the beginning that was just a garage filled with junk. And it slowly evolved into the show that became what you listen to twice a week. Sixteen years we've been doing this and we've decided that we had a great run and now, basically, it's time, folks. It's time. WTF is coming to an end, and it's our decision. 'Thankfully, we both realized, together, that we were done,' Maron continued. 'There was no convincing or pushback, or arguing. We were done. And it's okay. It's okay for things to end…This was a show that started when there were no podcasts. And now, there is nothing but podcasts.'Though podcasts had been around for nearly a decade before WTF, Maron's show was one of the first to garner mainstream attention and is largely credited with launching the current podcast boom.
