Napoli schedule talks to sign out-of-favour Liverpool star

Napoli have been working on a potential transfer for several weeks as the Serie A side look to beat competition from the Saudi Pro League to the forward.
Napoli schedule Darwin Nunez transfer talks
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that a new round of talks are scheduled this week as Napoli look to reach an agreement with the player. Antonio Conte wants to bolster his attacking options as Napoli prepare to return to the Champions League next season.
Victor Osimhen is set to leave the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium after returning from his loan spell at Galatasaray and Napoli want to reinvest those funds into a new winger and centre-forward.

Nunez started just eight times in the Premier League last season and has struggled for consistency at Anfield.
The Uruguayan joined Liverpool from Benfica for an initial fee of £64m in 2022 but has failed to convince.
Despite his erratic form, Liverpool value Nunez at around €70m (£59m). The Premier League champions believe a record of 25 goals and 13 assists from 49 starts in all competitions justifies that valuation.
Saudi side Al-Nassr saw a bid rejected in January, while divisional rivals Al-Hilal have expressed interest. Atletico Madrid are also understood to be admirers of Nunez, with the Spanish side seeking another forward as Ángel Correa nears a move to Mexico's Tigres.

Rudi Völler on Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool: 'A few months ago, he hinted to me, as did his father, that he was inclined to go to Liverpool.'
Rudi Völler on Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool: 'A few months ago, he hinted to me, as did his father, that he was inclined to go to Liverpool.' Speaking on Toni Kroos' podcast 'Einfach Mal Luppen' (via Sport1), DFB Sporting Director Rudi Völler commented on Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool. Despite no longer being the sporting director of Bayer Leverkusen, Völler is still close to the club and is regularly seen in the stands at the BayArena. Völler revealed some details about the whole saga surrounding Wirtz: 'I knew from my proximity to Bayer Leverkusen, also from his family or from him himself, what inquiries he had – it wasn't just Liverpool or Bayern Munich, there were others too.' Advertisement The former striker then revealed that despite the media portraying Bayern Munich as the favourites to sign the 22-year-old this summer, it seemingly wasn't the case: 'A few months ago, he hinted to me, as did his father, that he was inclined to go to Liverpool.' Wirtz's move to Liverpool will be concluded this week as he is expected to begin the initial stages of his medical today, reports Sky Germany, before everything is finalised tomorrow and the move is announced. However, Völler did reveal what everyone was hoping would happen to the Köln native this summer: 'Everyone was kind of hoping that he would stay here in Leverkusen for another year and not leave until after the World Cup. That would have been my preferred solution. But this is absolutely fine.' Now, Leverkusen are left with a big rebuild of their squad after the departures of Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool, Jonathan Tah to Bayern and head coach Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid. The main earned from Wirtz's move can also be used to begin the major overhaul of the squad. GGFN | Jack Meenan

Manchester City set to sign Freddie Lawrie, 16, from Aston Villa
Manchester City are set to bolster their youth ranks with the signing of Freddie Lawrie when his scholarship forms expire at Aston Villa. Lawrie joined Villa from Port Vale in September 2023 and by the end of August 2024 had made his debut for the England Under-16s. He has now made eight appearances for them. Advertisement The 16-year-old is most commonly deployed in central midfield but has also operated at centre-back for his national team. Lawrie's terms end this summer and Villa made him a strong offer to stay — but City are expected to capitalise, which will see them pay fellow Premier League side compensation. It is already turning into a busy summer for City, where sporting director Txiki Begiristain is being replaced by Hugo Viana but their work in the transfer market shows no sign of abating. While Viana is more focused on senior matters, he is said to have picked up where Begiristain left off in backing academy director Thomas Krucken, director of academy recruitment Sam Fagbemi and head of youth recruitment Carl Walker. They oversaw another successful season at age-group level. (Angel Martinez – The FA/The FA via Getty Images)
