Miami Dolphins (past and present) we'd love to see in Summer Olympics flag football

Yahoo4 days ago

NFL owners are about to huddle to make an important decision: whether to allow active players to participate in flag football in the 2028 Summer Olympics.
We know flag football is becoming an Olympic sport. We know the NFL is solidly behind the drive, thinking it will do nothing but expand interest in football globally, across a wider variety of demographics.

We also know some players — including the very vocal Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill — say they'd love to participate.
All that's left to sort out is whether owners are willing to risk players getting injured in the process. It's not so much a contact risk as it is a risk in changing direction or suffering soft-tissue ailments.
Owners will hold their spring meeting in Minneapolis on May 20-21 to vote on whether to allow no more than one player from each team to participate on a particular national team, in addition to each team's designated international player.
The 2028 Games will run July 14-30, so the overlap with training camp would be minimal.

The resolution before owners: "The membership believes that participation by NFL players in flag football during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California will support such growth and advance several league interests, including increasing fan and public interest in flag football, expanding the global reach of the NFL.'
Did somebody say this could lead to even more revenue for the NFL? Is that supposed to motivate owners to vote yes (wink, wink)?
With all this in mind, let's take a look at some Dolphins, past and present, we'd like to see in flag football. See if it matches your wish list:
Tyreek Hill thought Indianapolis Colts' NFL schedule video poking fun at him was funny
Active Miami Dolphins we'd like to see in flag football at the Summer Olympics
WR Tyreek Hill
Maybe after he races Noah Lyles, he can set his sights set on the Olympics. He'd be a natural.

RB De'Von Achane
Another obvious pick. Combination of quickness and agility. Flip it to him and watch him go.
CB Ethan Bonner
There's some thought he might actually be the fastest guy on the team. Let's see it.
OT Patrick Paul
He's listed at 6-feet-7, 332, but if you stand next to him you'd swear he's bigger than that. What does that have to do with flag football? Picture him barreling toward guys half his size, and whether they'd really care to take a swipe at his flags.
RB Jaylen Wright
We only got a taste of his shiftiness in his rookie year of 2024. This might be the perfect setting for him.
WR Anthony Schwartz
Practice squad receiver also has a claim to being fastest at the facility.
Miami Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert (31) spikes the ball after scoring a touchdown past New York Jets safety Tony Adams (22) during the first half of an NFL game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Dec. 17, 2023.
Former Miami Dolphins who likely would have been ringers
WR Wes Welker
We all know how good he was at getting open in tight spaces.

RB Mercury Morris
Images of him running around end still warm hearts of longtime Dolphins fans.
RB Reggie Bush
One of the best at running, catching. Definitely worth a look.
WR Mark Duper
Well, duh.
RB Raheem Mostert
See Duper. (Career rushing average: 5.0.)
WR Jakeem Grant
Just ask him.
QB David Woodley
They say QBs who can escape pressure are at a premium in this sport. That was Woodley's game.

Pittsburgh Steelers Ex 5th-Round Running Back Released From CFL Team

Pittsburgh Steelers Ex 5th-Round Running Back Released From CFL Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and fifth-round draft pick Jaylen Samuels is once again looking for a new home. Advertisement Samuels signed with the CFL's Ottawa Redblacks early last month but was released over the weekend as part of the team's final roster cuts. Samuels was one of 21 players cut. The 28-year-old was drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round at No. 165 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. The former NC State Gamecocks running back played for Pittsburgh for three seasons, appearing in 14 games each year, spreading out eight starts. He totaled 459 yards rushing on 131 attempts with one touchdown. Samuel left Pittsburgh to join the Houston Texans in 2021 before signing with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. He was cut before the season started that season. Advertisement He went back to Houston to join the XFL's Roughnecks in 2022 and then to San Antonio to the UFL's Brahamas in the 2024 UFL Draft. The Redblacks finished 2024 at 9-8-1 and in third place in the East Division, losing 58-38 to the Toronto Argonauts in the East Semifinal game of the playoffs. Samuel was without a team until the Redblacks came calling from the Great White North. At 28, he should still have a ton of football left in him, and he's now available to join any other team as a free agent - either in Canada or the US - to continue his career. As the UFL season is entering its playoffs, his opportunity there might come next season if he decides that's a path he'd like to follow. Former Oregon QB Turning Heads During NFL OTAs

Former Oregon QB Turning Heads During NFL OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Fans of the Oregon Ducks are likely clamoring for more after enjoying one of the best seasons in the history of the football program. They navigated the regular season, going undefeated through their first year in the Big Ten Conference after moving from the Pac-12. Advertisement The Ducks continued to impress after defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Big Ten Championship game. Their dominance landed them the No. 1 overall pick in the College Football Playoff. However, the extra time off may have been detrimental, as they went from December 7, until New Year's Day without a game after four months playing essentially every week and fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were coming off a win over Tennessee. Former Oregon QB turning heads in NFL OTAs Dillon Gabriel was the leader of the high-flying Oregon offense and was eventually selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. However, a different former Ducks quarterback has been turning heads in NFL OTAs. Advertisement According to FOX 8 New Orleans' Sean Fazende, Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has made an impression. "Shough looks very comfortable with vertical routes & out-breaking patterns," Fazende said on "His best throw may have been an incompletion where he rolled to his left and threw off platform to the sideline. Right now, not quite as comfortable in intermediate middle of field." Shough spent three seasons with the Ducks. In his first two, he was backing up Justin Herbert before being handed the reins. He eventually transferred to Texas Tech and then Louisville before the Saints took him in the second round. After Derek Carr's sudden retirement, Shough is now a candidate to win the starting job with Spencer Rattler. Advertisement It remains to be seen what kind of chance Shough truly has to win the starting job, but after watching Rattler in parts of last season, the Saints could decide to give him a chance. Tampa Bay Buccaneers $84 Million Defender Antoine Winfield Jr. Predicted for Rebound Season

Tampa Bay Buccaneers $84 Million Defender Antoine Winfield Jr. Predicted for Rebound Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Like much of the rest of the defense, Tampa Bay Buccaneers star safety Antoine Winfield Jr. had a less-than-stellar 2025. Advertisement The former Minnesota Golden Gopher dealt with an ankle injury for two separate parts of the season, causing him to miss eight total games in his first season after signing a four-year, $84.1 million deal with $45 million in guarantees to keep him in Tampa Bay. Winfield posted 60 total tackles with 34 solo and two for loss with four QB hits, two sacks and a 58-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. While the Buccaneers have focused on improving one of the league's worst units from a year ago this offseason through free agency and the draft, a resurgent year from Winfield would go a long way toward the ultimate goal. Pro Football Focus named Winfield the Bucs' "bounce-back candidate" for next season. Advertisement 'Tampa Bay struggled to defend the middle of the field in 2024, due in part to injuries and a dip in production from star safety Antoine Winfield Jr", PFF said. "He posted a career-low 50.8 coverage grade and, for the first time in his career, failed to record an interception.' Winfield posted almost elite numbers in 2023, so we know the potential is there. And the ankle injury isn't expected to be a factor next season, so we could see his play return to that 2023 form. He'll turn 27 in August, so youth is still on his side. Tampa Bay is on an incredible run, tying a record four-straight NFC South titles, and has made the postseason five years running.
