Lorry company owner called to assist probe into Teluk Intan crash that killed nine FRU personnel
TELUK INTAN, May 16 — The owner of a lorry company has been called to give a statement to assist in the investigation into the fatal accident which took the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel here, on Tuesday.
Hilir Perak district police chief ACP Bakri Zainal Abidin said the owner was among 15 witnesses who had been called to give their statements so far.
'Apart from the human negligence and environmental factor, we are also focusing on the technical aspects, so elements such as vehicle maintenance are also being taken into account in this investigation,' he said.
He said when met after the prosecution proceedings of the lorry driver involved in the accident at Jalan Chikus - Sungai Lampam on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Bakri said the police are hoping for more witnesses who have evidence of the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
He said this included the dashcam recordings before and during the incident, as no one had come forward to provide the footage.
'If there is a recording (dashcam) it will be solid evidence in this case. So far with the help of the media, several public witnesses have come forward to give statements, besides several stakeholders which will be of great assistance in this investigation, so I urge more people to contact us, the information will be kept confidential,' he said. — Bernama

IPOH, June 11 — Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) has set up a special fund for public contributions following the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 of its students last Monday. UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff, in a statement, said donations could be channelled through the Student Representative Council Fund (RHB Bank: 25807500029702) and the UPSI Prihatin Fund (Bank Islam: 08068010003264). He also expressed his appreciation to all Malaysians who had extended their sympathy and donated as a gesture of love and support for the families of the victims. 'It is only through love and a sense of humanity that we at UPSI can find the strength to face this sorrowful ordeal,' he said. Fifteen UPSI students were killed in the early hours of Monday when the bus they were travelling in overturned at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. UPSI has also set up an operations room to monitor all related matters and remains concerned about the welfare of its students and will provide psychological support to the victims undergoing treatment at the hospital. Meanwhile, the Perak government expressed its appreciation to all parties involved, including the medical and security teams who worked tirelessly in responding to the tragedy. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, in a statement, said the State Executive Council (MMK), which met today, also extended its appreciation to the medical teams at Gerik Hospital, Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) and Taiping Hospital. According to him, the medical teams spared no effort in saving lives and providing the best possible care to the victims. He also expressed his appreciation to the security forces, including the police, Fire and Rescue Department, and Civil Defence Force, for their swift and dedicated efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the victims. 'Not to be forgotten are the Gerik District Office, Ipoh City Council, government departments and relevant agencies that played a vital role in coordinating actions and providing logistical support, including assisting the victims' next of kin and families,' he said. Saarani also extended his gratitude to the UPSI management for their concern and swift action in addressing the welfare of the affected students as well as their next of kin and thanked non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals who came forward to offer assistance and support. He said that the contributions of all parties had enabled the remains of the victims to be brought home to their respective hometowns in an organised, respectful and seamless process. MACC questions ‘Tan Sri' for six hours over alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for Klang Valley highway project
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today recorded the statement of an individual with the title 'Tan Sri' for six hours in connection with the investigation into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the process of recording the statement, which began at about 9am, ended at 3pm and will continue tomorrow. He said that due to the Tan Sri's health condition, the process of recording the statement was conducted at his house in the Klang Valley. 'So far, MACC has recorded statements from 52 witnesses, including the Tan Sri and his family same process will continue tomorrow,' Azam said when contacted today. Meanwhile, it was reported that the MACC also conducted a raid at the Tan Sri's residence in Melaka, but nothing was seized or confiscated. Previously, it was reported that the MACC seized various assets, including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash, and a luxury residence, estimated at approximately RM32 million, believed to belong to a highway concessionaire with the title Tan Sri. — Bernama

Injuring eight Kuching dorm-mates with hot iron sees 14-year-old sent to reform school
KUCHING, June 11 — A 14-year-old boy who injured eight of his dorm-mates with a hot iron last month was today sentenced to a total of nine years in Henry Gurney School. The Form 2 student pleaded guilty to three charges each before Magistrates Ling Hui Chuan and Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali, and another two charges before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan. Each of the three magistrates sentenced him to three years at the reform school under Section 91(1)(f) of the Child Act 2001, after reviewing the Welfare Department's probation report. In addition to the said provision, the courts also ordered for the boy's parents or guardians to visit him regularly in accordance with Section 93(1)(d) of the same Act. Under Section 70 of the Child Act 2001, the courts also ordered that the boy be placed under the supervision of a probation officer for one year after completing his sentence. According to the charges, the boy intentionally injured eight male victims, aged 13 to 15, between 12.30am and 2am at a secondary school hostel here on May 2. All eight charges were framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment, or a fine, or caning, or any two such punishments upon conviction. Based on the facts of the case, a teacher informed the school's head warden at 9.22am on the same day that a student had reported burns on his left arm, which at the time were believed to have been caused by hot water, and asked to go home for treatment. Later, around 11.45am and 2.15pm, several more students came forward reporting injuries consistent with burns on various parts of their bodies, including their arms, calves, ankles, and necks. This raised suspicions, as the injuries seemed to result from deliberate contact with a hot object. A preliminary investigation by the school later pointed to the boy as the perpetrator. When questioned by school authorities, the boy admitted to have deliberately used a hot iron on eight of his dorm-mates. Police reports were subsequently lodged by the teacher, parents, and victims, leading to the boy's arrest on the same day. The police investigation found that the boy had used the hot iron on the victims while they slept. The injuries were recorded and verified by a specialist from Sarawak General Hospital and several eyewitnesses, including the victims, saw the boy committing the acts. The incident is believed to have stemmed from the boy's desire to bully his schoolmates without understanding the consequences of his actions. ASP Arman Ibrahim and Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin appeared separately for the prosecution. The boy was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyers Russell Lim and Brendan Ting. — The Borneo Post
