Tyrone Mings signs new Aston Villa contract through to 2027

New York Times04-06-2025
Tyrone Mings has signed a new contract at Aston Villa to keep him at the club until 2027.
Mings, who was set to enter the final 12 months of his existing deal, has signed a new one-year extension at Villa. The Athletic reported last month that contract talks were scheduled with the defender, who was keen to remain at the club having joined from Bournemouth in 2019.

This season, Mings has played through the pain barrier after making his long-awaited return from a second anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and defying expectations from doctors that he would miss more than two months following another knee injury sustained against West Ham United in January. In the end, he returned inside four weeks, risking his own health in the resulting matches.
The England international's return from injury has contributed to what manager Unai Emery described as 'fantastic form', with Villa winning six of the previous eight games he had started and keeping four clean sheets.
Earlier this year, Mings assumed a role on the board of directors for Euro 2028, which will be hosted in the United Kingdom but has no plans to retire soon.
In total, the 32-year-old made 21 appearances across all competitions last season and is a valued leader by Emery. Mings will continue to provide competition for Pau Torres for a starting berth as Villa's left-sided centre-back.

Andy Carroll makes feelings clear on Alexander Isak's conduct over Liverpool transfer

Andy Carroll has criticized Alexander Isak for trying to force a move to Liverpool and says the striker has burned his bridges with Newcastle fans. Isak has gone on strike and will not be involved in Newcastle's opening Premier League fixture against Aston Villa on Saturday as he has made it clear he wants to complete a move to Anfield. Liverpool has had one bid rejected for the Swedish international but that offer did not come close to Newcastle's valuation and the clubs remain at a standoff. Carroll, 36, played for both clubs after Liverpool spent a club-record $47.4m (£35m) to sign him in 2011. But the Newcastle-born forward later returned to St James' Park and insisted he never wanted to join Liverpool in the first place - unlike wantaway Isak. READ MORE: Liverpool laughs in Newcastle's face again with next transfer as Alexander Isak saga rumbles on READ MORE: Alexander Isak could end Liverpool's 10-year 'transfer rule' after Eddie Howe hint "Being from Newcastle, I didn't really want to leave. Didn't want to go. I wanted to stay. And it was tough when I did go," Carroll told Sky Sports. "But Isak's not from Newcastle so he can act like he's acting now and think it's acceptable. "It's a big move for him. The way he's playing his cards at the minute, the Newcastle fans are not going to back him, he's not going to help himself and it's a shame because he's such a good player and every Newcastle fan wants him to stay, the manager wants him to stay. "It's not really the same as me because it's not his club. The Geordies took him in and made him one of their own but when he wants to go, that's his mind changed." Liverpool's opening offer for Isak of £110million plus £10m in add-ons was turned down by Newcastle who value their star man at close to £150m. Isak refused to go on Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia, citing a thigh injury, instead training at former club Real Sociedad. Since his return to Newcastle, the 25-year-old has been training alone and boss Eddie Howe admitted Isak would not be selected for the clash at Villa despite him wanting his striker on the field. Howe said: "We do [have to forget about Isak] - he's not here with us. We have to focus on who is here and get the best out of them. The players are aware he's not here, the focus will be on each player playing to the best of their ability. "I want him to play. I want him to train. I've had those conversations [with Isak] but the details of those will remain private. There is no change to the situation. READ MORE: Liverpool suddenly handed Alexander Isak boost as club-record agreement struck READ MORE: Newcastle told it has been left with two options to solve Alexander Isak transfer saga "All my focus has been on the training, Aston Villa and the transfer front in terms of getting players in - that is all-consuming for me. Alex's situation has been unchanged for a while and that will continue to be the case." Newcastle are still seeking a viable replacement for Isak with the Mail reporting the north-east club are still exploring the possibility of a deal for Paris Saint-Germain's Goncalo Ramos. The Magpies are not under pressure to sell with Isak still under a contract for another three years. But Newcastle fans have already made clear they do not want Isak at the club and failure to strike a deal with Liverpool before the transfer deadline on September 1 would ultimately leave Howe with a player who does not want to be there. In what appeared an attempt to tug on Isak's heart strings, Howe said: "Me and Alex have enjoyed a great relationship. I don't think he would have done as well has he has done without that. Without his team-mates, without the supporters. "He is a highly intelligent person and he knows he wouldn't have had the success he's had without everybody connected with Newcastle."

Firestone Walker's 8Zero5 recreates the beer ritual without the actual booze

Americans are consuming less alcohol than ever. Breweries are feeling the heat -- and looking inward for solutions. There are two easy ways to create products for the least boozy generation. THC seltzers and other products made from hemp can create pathways to new markets. But while that opens up different social experiences, it struggles to replace the feeling of cracking a cold beer on a hot day. Which brings us to the second option; non-alcoholic beer. We've seen a rising tide of new NA brews, ranging from dedicated booze-free breweries (Best Day, Athletic) to new extensions from trusted brands. Firestone Walker falls squarely in the former category. The California brewer has emerged as one of the country's most reliable engines of bold, boozy beers. Can that expertise translate to non-alcoholic brews? 8Zero5 Non-Alcoholic Blonde: B+ It pours an effervescent copper color. A white head builds to about half an inch before slowly fizzling down to a thin ring at the top. The smell is light and leans close to a hefeweizen. You get a little wheat, some clove and minor fruit. The taste is similarly airy, with modest sweetness and a soft, not quite crisp, finish. The cereal grain experience you get from typical non-alcoholic beers isn't there. Though it lacks the boozy punch of a regular beer, it still gets you 90 percent of the way to a light beer. Except you're getting more flavor here than you would with a Miller Lite or the like. It does a solid job mirroring its boozy forebearer, bringing in just a little fruit and spice working on top of a current of sweet malt. That makes it an easy sipper or crushable summer beer. It would be nice with a bit more of a bite toward the end -- a little hop crispness to wash everything away dryly. But as is, it avoids the pitfalls of typical NA brews and doesn't feel like you're drinking a bowl of Grape Nuts. If you're looking for a replacement of your regular light beer, this will provide solid flavor alongside the ritual of cracking and pounding a can. Would I drink it instead of a Hamm's? This a pass/fail mechanism where I compare whatever I'm drinking to my baseline cheap beer. That's the standby from the land of sky-blue waters, Hamm's. So the question to answer is: on a typical day, would I drink 8Zero5 non-alcoholic beer over a cold can of Hamm's? I'd cycle one in every now and again to keep my head straight, sure. This is part of FTW's Beverage of the Week series. Here, we mostly chronicle and review beers, but happily expand that scope to any beverage that pairs well with sports. Yes, even cookie dough whiskey.

Mike Vrabel has spicy exchange with Patriots reporter over Stefon Diggs question

Things got spicy in Minnesota when Mike Vrabel was at the podium. The first-year Patriots coach — never one to mince words when calling out the media — had a tense exchange Thursday with a reporter who inquired about comments made by star receiver Stefon Diggs over his Week 1 availability. 'Did you really believe that, Phil [Perry]? I mean, you're a smart guy. I don't know where you went to school – it wasn't Ohio State. But like, do you really believe that? Do you really believe that, Phil, or are you just trying to bait me into something?' Vrabel said. 5 Patriots coach Mike Vrabel had a spicy exchange with a reporter in August 2025. AP Perry of NBC Sports Boston then told Vrabel, 'I'm not baiting you into anything,' and added, '[Diggs] did say he wasn't sure he'd be ready for Week 1.' Diggs, who agreed to a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the Patriots in free agency, is coming off a torn ACL sustained last October when he played for the Texans. During an appearance on the 'Scoop City' podcast this week, the four-time Pro Bowler said he feels 'great' and 'we'll see about Week 1,' when the Patriots host the Raiders on Sept. 7. 5 Patriots coach Mike Vrabel had a spicy exchange with a reporter in August 2025. Patriots/YouTube Upon hearing Perry's follow-up question, Vrabel said Thursday he was unclear about 'the context in which [Diggs] said it,' and how the All-Pro wideout has 'been out here almost every day.' 'I'm excited of where he's at and we'll see when Week 1 comes, but he's going to practice today. Hopefully, he helps us in the red zone, but we can't predict the future about Week 1. I just know he's going to be out there today, and he works hard and he cares, which are two important things,' Vrabel said. Diggs scored three touchdowns across eight appearances with the Texans in 2024 before he went down with an injury. 5 Stefon Diggs is coming off an ACL injury he sustained in October 2024. AP He was traded to Houston in April 2024 by the Bills. In each of his four seasons in Buffalo, Diggs surpassed 1,000 receiving yards and caught a career-high 11 touchdowns in 2022. The Patriots, coming off a forgettable 4-13 season, will be relying on Diggs as second-year quarterback Drake Maye looks to take the next step following a promising rookie campaign. 5 Mike Vrabel is in his first season as head coach of the Patriots. Getty Images The third overall pick in 2024 threw 15 touchdowns against 10 interceptions through 13 regular-season games. Vrabel, a Super Bowl-winning linebacker with the franchise, has put his own flair on the club since being named head coach in January. Beyond breaking up training camp skirmishes, Vrabel is making sure reporters are staying alert with questions. As the Patriots entered training camp in July, Vrabel scolded a Boston reporter for framing a question similarly to one that had already been asked. Ben Volin of the Boston Globe went on to flag himself for a 'total lack of focus.'
