Netflix fans addicted to Italian prison drama that's 'as good as The Godfather'
Netflix viewers have been bowled over by a recently added Italian prison drama that has earned comparisons to The Godfather.
They have shared their reluctance to leave their homes to binge-watch The Sea Beyond on the global streaming platform, which has been described as 'addictive' and 'engaging.'
The show centres on two teenagers, Filippo (Nicolas Maupas) and Carmine (Massimiliano Caiazzo), who are serving time in prison in Naples but have wider ambitions that are being thwarted by crime boss Ciro (Giacomo Giorgio).
On IMDb, viewers have hailed The Sea Beyond as 'phenomenal' and urged others to add it to their watch list.
Among them is Holdenyou-03579, who said: 'The plot is like The Godfather for kiddies, except these 'juveniles' look anything but juvenile, perhaps young adults in their mid twenties at least. They are also the best-dressed juvenile delinquents. Ciro and Eduardo have a permanent frown, as all of the characters have their quirks. I have never seen so much crying and hugging as on this show between men, or supposedly boys.'

Echoing their sentiment, Rosaricci wrote: 'This show is great and I honestly got addicted from the first few episodes. One thing I love about this show is that you can't tell who the main character is because everyone is given equal time to shine, and everyone's story is beautifully explained. The actors are almost all newbies, but the acting is awesome. The chemistry between couples (especially Gemma & Cardiotrap and Rosa & Carmine) is just perfect. Plus I love the soundtrack.'
TCS-31272 added: 'I have to say the acting is phenomenal considering the actors are newbies. It's a story about love, hate and revenge. Young teenagers making mistakes and learning from them, making friends and memories along the way. The chemistry between couples like Rosa & Carmine and Cardio & Gemma is just perfect. The first season was really sad. The second season was good and the third season was the best.'
According to Variety, The Sea Beyond has become a 'major pop culture phenomenon' in Italy since it was first broadcast on the country's equivalent of the BBC, called RAI, in 2020. To date, four seasons have been produced, while another two have been commissioned.
A prequel film titled Io Sono Rosa Ricci (I am Rosa Ricci), based on Maria Esposito's character Rosa, will also be added to Netflix. It will be released theatrically in Italy later this year.
The Sea Beyond is not the only Italian drama that has been gripping Netflix viewers recently, as they have also been devouring The Law According to Lidia Poet.
The six-parter is based on a true story, and chronicles Italy's first qualified female lawyer Lidia Poet (Matilda De Angelis), who is banned from practising because of her sex.
Set in the 19th century and battling misogyny, she investigates homicides.
X user Tom_MBS described the show as a 'little gem' while AmandaPCraig said she was 'gripped'.
Others described the show as 'smart' and 'feisty'. More Trending
On Reddit, Mergraote recommended it to a fellow poster, saying: 'The Law According to Lidia Poet is excellent', while Kanjilal_s said they 'loved the show'.
Reviews on its Rotten Tomatoes page include: 'Fresh, realistic, and entertaining. Great performances.'
As well as being a hit with viewers, The Law According to Lidia Poet has also been a critical triumph, with the first season scoring a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second boasts 92%.
The Sea Beyond is available to stream on Netflix.

Strictly star slams 'double standards' at BBC after Naga Munchetty 'sex jibe'
A Strictly Come Dancing star has slammed the BBC over its 'double standards' following presenter Naga Munchetty's alleged 'sex jibe'. Welsh opera singer, Wynne Evans, 53, was sensationally dumped from the Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour earlier this year over inappropriate comments he made. The 'unacceptable' joke – which was first believed to be towards host Janette Manrara but Wynne has since insisted it was a jibe at Jamie Borthwick – apparently referenced having a threesome. Soon after, he apologised, saying he was 'deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate action caused' and would take a break from the public eye for 'self-reflection' and to 'prioritise my well-being'. Now, however, following the news that BBC Breakfast star Naga is facing bullying allegations and inappropriate 'sex jibe' claims, Wynne has called out the director general, Tim Davie. Posting the front page of The Sun in a now-deleted post, Wynne said: 'I really wish Naga well and I hope she doesn't get hounded. 'But come on @bbc @bbccymruwales what double standards. 'Tim Davie [Director-general of the BBC] promised to protect people on Strictly from being hounded by the press, but he won't even meet with me.' Presenter Naga, 50, hosts the BBC flagship morning programme alongside Charlie Stayt. It was reported earlier this year that an internal investigation was being carried out into allegations of bullying at the program. Since, it has emerged that the editor of BBC Breakfast, Richard Frediani, is taking an extended period of leave after allegations of bullying behaviour, including a claim he shook a female colleague. Deadline reported that Naga had raised concerns with senior BBC figures regarding his conduct, amid other misconduct complaints colleagues made against him. The Sun then reported claims that Naga faced her own bullying allegations. No formal action has been taken, but she is said to have been spoken to about an incident. Wynne previously spoke to The Sun about the fallout, saying he is 'not a bad guy'. He also stated that he is 'not a misogynist', explaining that 'spit-roast boy' was a nickname given to EastEnders actor Jamie, insisting that the quip was a prank that 'backfired'. 'It's been heartbreaking,' he said of the aftermath. ''Spit-roast boy' was a nickname we all gave Jamie Borthwick because he could contort his legs over his head like a spit-roast chicken. 'I would be the first to apologise if I had used it in the double meaning of that word. 'But it absolutely wasn't meant sexually – and the fact I used 'boy,' alright, it's nuanced, but it shows I was talking to Jamie, NOT Janette.' Earlier this month, Wynne shared a full apology video from Strictly Come Dancing, which he claims the BBC ordered him to cut short. The singer and his professional dance partner sparked controversy when she appeared to move his hand from her waist, which he said was 'just a body language experiment that was picked up on'. The pair shared a brief apology video at the time, but he has now shared a different version, which is 50 seconds long instead of the 10-second clip that got published. His video begins with Katya saying: 'Hello everyone. We felt the need to clarify something. We find it quite fascinating how people take time to look into in such detail every gesture, every look.' Wynne added: 'So we thought we'll mess around. And we said, 'Oh I'll put my hand on your waist, you pretend to move it away, and let's see who notices it.' 'And now everybody thinks I'm a weirdo. But really, I promise you I'm not. And we're doing this high ten thing as well, where she blanks me from a high ten.' The pair insisted it was 'all sort of planned just to see if anybody notices', while Katya said they wanted to 'clarify that it's all just messing around'. More Trending 'He's not a creep,' she added. 'But he's a brilliant dancer.' When he was removed from the bill, having already done several performances, a spokesperson from the BBC said: 'We have made it very clear to Wynne that we do not tolerate such behaviour on the tour. 'We were not previously aware of the remark and did not receive any complaints.' View More » Metro has contacted the BBC for comment. Got a story? Gail Porter wows with wig transformation 20 years after alopecia diagnosis
Gail Porter has been showered with compliments from fans after stepping out wearing a wig. The Scottish TV personality began losing her hair to alopecia – a condition that causes hair loss or baldness in some or all areas of the body – in 2005. Several years later, her lashes and brows began growing back, and she sported a short, cropped look. However, in 2010, the former model revealed that she had started losing her hair once more, and the following year, she unveiled a shaved head again. Gail, 54, has always refused to wear a wig or hairpieces to conceal her baldness, having been keen on raising awareness of alopecia. However, in recent years, she's started to experiment more, and last year, she unveiled a mid-length blonde wig to her followers. Then, last night, she rocked a dramatic new look, heading to the British LGBT Awards with long locks. The ceremony has been held annually since 2014 and is a huge moment in the LGBTQ+ community's calendar, with the likes of Jade, Billy Porter, and Ian 'H' Watkins receiving trophies this time. Ahead of walking the red carpet, Gail took to Instagram to debut her blonde tresses, which she wore in waves as they cascaded down past her waist. She tagged Amber Jean Rowan in the caption, thanking the wig maker – who has also made wigs for Strictly's Amy Dowden after her cancer treatment. Taking to the comments, her 81,000 followers were keen to heap praise on her, with some having to do a double-take to make sure it was really her. 'Stunning 😍😍 Gawjeeeeus 😍😍', commented @mcchalkiewhite. 'Wow Gail. Beautiful with it and Beautiful without it', wrote @christine_anne_garstin. 'Gail you look amazing 😍😍😍', complimented @tinabear1969. 'Wow had to look twice 👏 looks really good 👍', wrote @neilcornish13. Gail removed her wig for the event itself, posing proudly on the carpet alongside some of the UK's biggest LGBTQ+ talent and allies. The former children's television presenter got her first wig in 20 years in January 2024, which she debuted on social media. She wrote at the time: 'First wig ever!! Well, one that's coming home with me and the cat! Made with so much love and care ❤️Thank you so so much to everyone at @amberjeanshop Adore my new hair! X' Speaking previously about losing her hair, the ex-Celebrity Big Brother housemate explained to Metro that she was forced to sleep on benches when work dried up as a result of her refusing to wear a wig. Gail found that TV shows were only interested in booking her if she would talk about 'being bald', which also came while going through her divorce with her former husband and Toploader guitarist Dan Hipgrave. As her situation worsened in the mid-00s, Gail was unable to make ends meet as she became 'more and more depressed'. When appearing on the BBC Access All Podcast in August 2023, Gail also explained that work dried up very rapidly. 'It was so quick,' she said. 'I had long blonde hair, and then four weeks later I was completely bald. 'People didn't want to go near me for television or anything because I looked different.' More Trending Last year, she was also praised for taking on her first photoshoot in a wig, with Sue Schilling, the chief executive of Alopecia UK, saying it is key to give people options as there is neither a 'right' nor a 'wrong' way to have alopecia. Gail added to The Sun at the time: 'I don't think I'm a role model, but if me being bald or me wearing a wig gives someone the confidence to go and try it for themselves, I'm glad. 'I like the fact that women and men talk to me about hair loss.' Got a story? The film follows an author who reveals the fictional world he created is actually a real place and is being directed by legendary filmmaker JJ Abrams. And making a Hollywood blockbuster is clearly hungry work as the director stopped by for a bite to eat at a local restaurant. A lot of the city centre filming has been taking place on Bothwell Street. So the filmmaker didn't have far to stroll as he popped into Sarti's Italian restaurant on Bath Street on Thursday night. He posed with two of the staff after tucking into his meal. They proudly shared their encounter with the famous face on their social media. A post on their Instagram read: "A Special Visitor at Sarti! "We had the pleasure of welcoming @jjabramsofficial to Sarti Bath St!
