Smurfs bosses spent a year deciding on Smurfette's ‘new look' with Rihanna
Smurfs director Chris Miller has opened up about how Rihanna was 'invaluable' on set, breathing new life into one of the most iconic characters in the world.
The filmmaker is responsible for bringing the blue crew back to the big screen for another adventure with a star-studded cast, including John Goodman as Papa Smurf alongside James Corden, Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Dan Levy, Sandra Oh and Hannah Waddingham.
The movie follows Smurfette (Rihanna) and No Name (James) springing into action and leading the gang on a wild mission to bring Papa Smurf (John Goodman) back after he's mysteriously kidnapped.
As well as leading the cast, the Diamonds singer recorded a new song for the soundtrack – while also serving as producer, working closely with Chris to bring their vision to life.
Speaking to Metro, the filmmaker lifted the lid on working so closely with the mom-of-two, sharing: 'She brought a life. Obviously her performance is great and that's something that happens over the course of a few years, many recording sessions.
'In between that, we were hyper focused with Rih, especially on Smurfette and do we want to bring a new look to Smurfette?
'We spent a long time – about a year, actually – even going through different hair styles and even slight subtle costume changes and little things.
'We really, really, really pushed it to places that it was like, 'We can't, this is not going to happen.' We went almost full circle back to those original Peyo designs with some slight modifications, and felt really good about it.
'With Rihanna, it's like showing her art and really just getting her to react. She was invaluable in that way.'
Smurfs will be unleashed on the big screen this week, and the official synopsis reads: 'When Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette (Rihanna) leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him.
'With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.'
Smurfette made her debut in the comic strip in 1966 and became an instant favorite with fans – she was voiced by Lucille Bliss in more than 200 episodes of the cartoon version, while Katy Perry took on the role in the 2011 film, and the 2013 sequel.
Demi Lovato and Melissa Sturm have also voiced the character over the years, with Rihanna putting her own spin on the character in the latest Smurfs project.
Without giving too much away, RiRi's version managed to get under the skin of Papa Smurf's brother, Ken – aka Nick Offerman – with the pair spending much of the film trading barbs. More Trending
When asked how it was to go up against the reigning queen of sass, Nick told us: 'It was really fun. I'm hoping we can keep our beef contained to just on screen.
'But Rihanna is a very spicy personality so I'll mind my manners at the premiere.'
As he should.
Smurfs is in cinemas on July 18.

Lidl is giving away free bakery items every day — including 'top tier' pastry
From the iconic cheese twist to all butter croissants and pizza slices galore, there's no temptation – or smell – quite like the Lidl bakery. This August, though, the budget supermarket is stepping up its sweet treat game, as pastry fans will be able to grab free bakery items every single day. Yes, you read that correctly. Starting on July 31, members will be able to take part in the Lidl Bakery Spin via the Lidl Plus app. All you need to do is buy an item in-store, and scan your app when paying. You'll then have one week to tap and spin the wheel to see which tasty freebie you've bagged, which is, arguably, a piece of cake. Better still, there are 21 freshly baked goods up for grabs, including the bestselling all butter croissant, which is so popular with bakery aficionados that it sells 218 each minute. Mozzarella & Pesto Pizza Vegetable Pizza Slice Apple Turnover Maple and Pecan Plait 5.5% Pecans Belgian Bun All Butter Pain au Chocolat All Butter Croissant Baked Cookies Assorted Demi Baguette Jam Filled Doughnut Filled Muffins Assorted Toffee Filled Yum Yum Chocolate Hazelnut Doughnut Almond Croissant Pink Iced Ring Doughnut Chocolate Iced Ring Doughnut Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant Pizza Margherita White Cheddar Chocolate Twist Cheese Twist Rosemary and Sea Salt Focaccia Roll. Lidl's famous bakery has long been hailed a culinary destination, with many praising its 'mouth-watering' sweet staples. Over on the r/AskUK Subreddit, @crazycatdiva said that the chocolate brownies are 'honestly the best I've ever had,' labelling them 'phenomenal.' @wildgoldchai added that the Portuguese pastéis de nata are 'like crack in pastry form' and at a 'fantastic price too,' while @julialoveslush said, 'I'm autistic and they're one of my 'safe' foods. I adore them.' Elsewhere, @Forstaken-Voice-6686 believes that both the 'brownies and pretzels are god tier,' while @ricketycricket09 favours the 'top tier' cheese twist. Last month, Lidl stepped up its bakery game considerably – and added a Birthday Cake Bun priced at just 79p. Featuring pale pink icing and rainbow sprinkles, there's a fruity pink swirl tucked inside. Following the launch, Metro decided to put the Birthday Cake Bun to the test and find out if it's worth buying, and it certainly went down a treat. James Besanvalle, Metro's assistant opinion editor, rated it a 4.5 out of 5, hailing it as 'fantastic'. More Trending He said: 'Lidl's new Birthday Cake Bun combines all the best elements of a doughnut (pink icing and sprinkles) with a scroll-like bun (jam-filled and soft in the middle). Sure, it's sweet – but who really wants a birthday cake that's not? Supremely satisfying.' Metro's specialist food writer, Courtney Pochin, described it as a 'fun twist on a classic.' ''There's something so spectacularly nostalgic about the taste of an iced bun and it went down very nicely with a cup of tea,' she added. Netflix fans 'genuinely confused' as period drama reboot makes baffling change
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Mr Wickham is classic literature's most dastardly character – but fans are worried Netflix's Pride and Prejudice reboot has already made a big mistake. The highly-anticipated six episode adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel is helmed by Everything I Know About Love's Dolly Alderton. The period drama remake stars Emma Corrin as our literary heroine Elizabeth Bennett opposite Jack Lowden's broody Mr Darcy as well as Oliva Colman as the ever-worried Mrs Bennett. The stacked cast doesn't end there with stars like Jamie Demetriou, Fiona Shaw and Rufus Sewell also making up the ensemble cast. As Netflix dropped their first look of the series – which features the Bennett sisters with their vibrant mother in period-typical clothing – they also announced Enola Holmes star Louis Partridge as the villainous Mr Wickham. For those unversed in the plot of Pride and Prejudice (brace yourself for 200-year-old spoilers) Wickham was Darcy's agemate and was adopted into his home growing up. After Darcy's father died, however, he unveiled himself as a scammer who preys on young girls, not least Darcy's own teenage sister Georgiana and, as we uncover in the book, Lizzie's young and flighty sister Lydia Bennett. Both Darcy and Wickham are understood to be in their late 20s, with the actors portraying them in various adaptations aged from their mid 20s to mid 30s over the years. For example, in the 1995 BBC adaptation, Wickham is played by a 37-year-old Adrian Lukis, although this was different in the 2005 version in which he was played by a 24-year-old Rupert Friend. All this to say, at only 22, Partridge is youngest (and certainly the youngest-looking) star to play the novel's villain yet especially in contrast to Lowden who is 35-years-old. What's more, Heartstopper's Rhea Norwood who will play 15-year-old Lydia is older then Partridge at 24 which has never happened in a major adaptation before. Given Wickham's nefarious nature as a groomer who takes advantage of vulnerable young girls is a central part of his character and the plot, many fans are concerned that this will be lost in the surprise casting. Mr Darcy In the novel: 28 1995 version: 35 (Colin Firth) 2005 version: 31 (Matthew Macfadyen) Netflix version: 35 (Jack Lowden) Mr Wickham In the novel: around 28 1995 version: 37 (Adrian Lukis) 2005 version: 24 (Rupert Friend) Netflix version: 22 (Louis Partridge) Lydia Bennett In the novel: 15 1995 version: 27 (Julia Sawalha) 2005 version: 21 (Jena Malone) Netflix version: 24 (Rhea Norwood) As put by X user splendour1999 who wrote: 'ok but seriously how does this make any sense. Jack Lowden is 35. how does Wickham and Darcy's backstory make any sense now. 'And Wickham looking/being so young undermines ya know, him taking advantage of 15 year old Lydia.' 'Genuinely confused because the obvious evilness of Wickham is that he clearly grooms Georgiana and Lydia using his older age as a way to 'charm' them… and now he's closer in age to them than Mr. Darcy?' Taylisaprint echoed. 'The point in the end was Mr Wickham was a predator. He's supposed to be played by a grown man to emphasis him running off with her underage sister,' dojasbin agreed. 'Wickham is meant to be predatory before being a scammer in the story. That is a key part of his character and how he takes advantage of lydia's youth and naivete, removing that flips the dynamic entirely,' doedamseI added. Many made it clear while they love Partridge as an actor, he is just not the right fit for this – especially contrasted to the age of the rest of the cast. 'I'm not happy with the Wickham casting. this is no shade to louis at all but it should be someone older than 25,' knjoonlight shared. More Trending Nevertheless, Alderton has shared her excitement at showing the world her take on the timeless love story as filming begins. 'Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it. 'Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.'
