The attacker, identified as Rajesh Sakriya from Gujarat, was caught immediately and is being questioned. Political parties have condemned the attack, with BJP alleging conspiracy and AAP calling for strict action.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked this morning during a public hearing (Jansunwai) at her residence, leading to injuries on her hand and head. She was rushed to hospital, and doctors are currently monitoring her condition.
The attacker, identified as Rajesh Sakriya from Rajkot, Gujarat, was overpowered by security personnel on the spot and is being interrogated by Delhi Police. According to preliminary reports, his mother claimed he was disturbed over the Supreme Court's order to round up stray dogs and shift them to shelters, noting that her son was a dog lover.
Senior BJP leaders and top police officers quickly reached the Chief Minister's residence following the incident. BJP spokesperson Harish Khurana condemned the attack, demanding a probe into whether it was politically motivated. Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also alleged a possible conspiracy by rivals who, he claimed, could not tolerate Gupta's work at the grassroots level.
Opposition leader Atishi from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) strongly condemned the assault, saying, 'There is no place for violence in a democracy. Disagreement and protest are part of democratic values, but violence cannot be tolerated.' She urged Delhi Police to take the strictest action.
Eyewitnesses reported that Sakriya approached the Chief Minister with papers during the hearing and, while speaking to her, suddenly launched the attack. The Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh has ordered an inquiry into the security lapse and will personally oversee the investigation.

TMC MLA, councillors get anticipatory bail in 2021 Abhijit Sarkar murder case

In a major relief for Trinamool Congress MLA Paresh Pal and Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillors Swapan Samaddar and Papiya Ghosh, the Calcutta High Court of Thursday granted all three anticipatory bail in the 2021 Abhijit Sarkar murder case. Sarkar, a BJP worker, was killed during the alleged post-poll violence in Kankurgachi after the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections in May 2021. On Thursday, a single bench of Justice Joy Sengupta granted them anticipatory bail with certain conditions. According to the court, if the three, while appearing before the lower court on CBI summons, get arrested, they will be granted bail immediately on a bond of Rs 1 lakh. They will not be permitted to enter Sarkar's house in Shitalatla Lane and will have to cooperate in the investigation. The court added that the witnesses should not be influenced or threatened, and none of the accused can leave the country. Pal, Samaddar and Ghosh moved the Calcutta High Court in July, seeking anticipatory bail in the case. On June 30, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed a supplementary charge sheet before the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) of Sealdah court in the case, naming Pal, the Beliaghata MLA, Samaddar, and Ghosh, along with 15 others. Pal and the councillors were to appear before the Sealdah court on July 18. According to the FIR in the case, Sarkar's mother, Madhabi, had stated that on May 2, 2021, eight people allegedly barged into their house at Narkeldanga around 3 pm and started 'enquiring about her son'. The accused alleged that the Sarkars had 'illegally occupied rooms belonging to the railways and started beating up Abhijit, leaving him unconscious'. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The CBI began its probe on August 25, 2021. After taking over the investigation, the central agency filed a supplementary charge sheet on September 30, 2021 before the ACJM court in Sealdah against 20 accused, including the 15 already charge-sheeted by the state police. In May 2022, Biswajit Sarkar sat in a dharna outside the CBI office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake, demanding a 'speedy and effective' investigation into his brother's death. Days after that, the Central agency summoned Pal. Sarkar's family has alleged that TMC supporters killed him and that Pal had a role to play in the murder. Meanwhile, in the Nabanna Abhijan violence on August 9 case, the single bench of Justice Joy Sengupta granted anticipatory bail to former BJP MP Arjun Singh, BJP councillor Sajal Ghosh, BJP leader Shanku Deb Panda and Kali Khatik with the condition that they will cooperate with the investigation. The same bench had earlier granted anticipatory bail to BJP MLA and former cricketer Ashok Dinda in the case.

‘A lion knows how to live': Vijay roars during TVK Maanadu event, says ‘only ideological enemy is BJP'

TVK Maanadu at Madurai: At a high-voltage rally in Tamil Nadu's Madurai ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay declared the BJP as his party's only ideological enemy and accused the ruling DMK of secret ties with the Centre. Drawing historical parallels and invoking regional pride, Vijay framed TVK as the political alternative Tamil Nadu has been waiting for. Delivering his speech at the party's second state conference, the actor-politician used symbolism, sharp political messaging, and emotional appeal to consolidate support for TVK, which will contest elections for the first time in 2026. At the event, Vijay declared, "A lion knows how to live in a crowd and also knows how to live alone. It remains unique. A lion comes out only to hunt, not for entertainment. It always hunts only living prey." With the 2026 Assembly elections on the horizon, Vijay painted TVK as a disruptive force—grounded in public service and moral clarity. The address, delivered before a massive crowd of supporters, marked a turning point in TVK's political messaging, aiming to establish the party as an alternative in Tamil Nadu politics. Vijay was unambiguous in identifying the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as his party's 'only ideological enemy', contrasting TVK's platform with what he called the BJP's "anti-people policies" and centralised governance model. He accused the BJP of ignoring the specific cultural and socio-economic realities of Tamil Nadu. In a direct challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vijay said: 'Revoke NEET! Can you do it, Narendra Modi avargal?' 'Because of your stubbornness, you continue to impose the NEET exam… NEET must be abolished.' He accused the Centre of being deaf to the pain of Tamil Nadu's students, and warned that ignoring regional concerns would carry political costs. While his ideological opposition was reserved for the BJP, Vijay did not spare the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) either, describing the ruling party as his 'only political enemy'. 'DMK has a secret alliance with the BJP but puts on a drama of opposition,' he alleged, suggesting that the current government was complicit in preserving the status quo while pretending to resist it. Vijay's remarks signal a dramatic reshaping of Tamil Nadu's political rhetoric, where the usual binary between the DMK and AIADMK is being deliberately challenged. TVK, founded in 2024, will be contesting its first-ever state assembly election in 2026. Vijay is framing the moment as historic, likening it to Tamil Nadu's political watershed years of 1967 and 1977—when the DMK and AIADMK rose to power for the first time, respectively. '2026 will see a magic like 1967 and 1977,' he predicted. 'Newcomers can win by standing against entrenched power.' With this framing, Vijay aims to mobilise sentiment around a generational change, banking on voter fatigue with legacy parties and their perceived failures. Vijay's speech articulated a vision of 'real, emotional politics', centred on dignity, inclusion, and justice. He promised a government that would prioritise women's safety, farmers' rights, and the needs of marginalised communities including transgender people, the elderly, and the differently-abled. 'TVK is not a party that makes underground deals, forges alliances, or cheats the people. We are not afraid of anyone. The people of Tamil Nadu, the women and the youth, stand with us.' Addressing foreign policy issues that affect Tamil Nadu's coastal communities, Vijay criticised the Centre for failing to safeguard Tamil fishermen from alleged harassment by the Sri Lankan Navy. '800 Tamil Nadu fishermen have been attacked… Retrieve Katchatheevu and give it to us,' he demanded, invoking a longstanding territorial and livelihood issue that resonates deeply in the region. Vijay recently launched the 'Now TVK' mobile application to accelerate party membership and outreach ahead of the 2026 elections. The tech-driven push, coupled with on-ground mobilisation like the Madurai rally, suggests TVK is building a campaign that blends star power with grassroots engagement. The party's goal, according to Vijay, is not short-term electoral gain but long-term transformation. 'TVK is not a party started for political benefits. It is for the betterment of people.'

TN 2026 election a direct fight between TVK and DMK: Vijay

Chennai: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday declared that the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election would be a straight contest between his party and the ruling DMK. Addressing a massive gathering at TVK's second State-level conference at Parapathi in Madurai district, Vijay said the BJP was his ideological enemy while the DMK was his political opponent. Thousands of TVK cadres and fans had assembled at the venue since Wednesday night, and Vijay arrived in his trademark style, running across a 500-metre ramp as supporters cheered and party colours filled the air. 'All Tamil people are my blood relatives. I came into politics with determination, not as a refuge. Serving the people is my duty, and I will stand with them all my life,' he said. Vijay ruled out any alliance with the BJP, describing it as a 'fascist force,' and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of forcing the NEET examination on Tamil Nadu. He also came down heavily on the DMK government, charging Chief Minister M.K. Stalin with misleading women, government employees, and other sections of society through unfulfilled promises. 'Answer us, Stalin uncle. Did you come to power to serve the people or betray them? It is very wrong, uncle,' he said, criticising the government over corruption, women's safety, the farmer crisis, and the Parandur airport protests. Reiterating that TVK will contest all 234 constituencies, Vijay told the crowd that the candidates would be drawn from local communities and urged voters to treat every TVK nominee as if he himself were contesting. In a symbolic announcement, he said he would contest from Madurai East and nine other constituencies before clarifying that wherever TVK fields a candidate, it should be seen as his own battle. Vijay also criticised the Centre for neglecting the Keezhadi archaeological findings and the plight of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy. He aimed the AIADMK for straying from the ideals of its founder, M.G. Ramachandran, while recalling the legacy of late DMDK leader Vijayakant. 'The BJP cannot succeed in this secular land with any alliance,' he declared. Concluding his speech, Vijay told his cadre that the political fight in Tamil Nadu was now reduced to two sides. 'The 2026 election will be between the DMK and the TVK. Let us together build a new Tamil Nadu.'
