BTS' Jungkook has a punishing work ethic, desire to repay: Author pens ‘most painful' chapter in new book on the K-pop star

Indian Express10 hours ago
Former Vogue fashion editor Monica Kim, who closely watched the rise of the K-pop group, has been making rounds on the internet for the past few days because of her new book, 'The Meaning of Jungkook: The Triumph of BTS and the Making of a Global Pop Superstar.' Excerpts from the book, now going viral on social media, capture the journey of BTS's youngest member, Jeon Jungkook, and how he's become an unstoppable force. Kim believes the singer's charisma and popularity go beyond his label's heavy push, and that he's only getting started. In the book, Kim also breaks down a chapter where three brands were chasing him for endorsements and recalls what went down during a 2016 concert, when Jungkook, completely exhausted and gasping for air, still insisted on performing because he didn't want to let his fans down. This comes amid buzz that Jungkook might be heading out on a solo world tour soon.

'I was in bad condition. My body felt it, my head felt it, but I performed with only one thought in my mind: I won't be able to see [these fans] for a long time,' Kim recalled Jungkook's exact words from a 2016 performance. The backstage video from that show had gone viral back then, with fans slamming the label for its gruelling work culture that left the singer physically drained and visibly unwell. 'There lies the reason behind Jungkook's punishing work ethic: his devotion to his fans and the desire to repay the love he has been given,' Kim wrote. Fans have been calling it one of the most painful chapters in the book, as it describes moments where the youngest member pushed himself way past the limit, all to give that love back in the only way he knew: hard work.
'He's said it sooo many times. In his Golden concert, in his lives. JK always credits his success to ARMY and wants to repay us. I worry he gives too much power to the ARMY and lets that dictate his choices. We don't know what he sees online. I just wish people would stop projecting their wants onto him and just appreciate his effort,' one fan commented. Another added, 'In no way should this be romanticised. It was extremely irresponsible for the staff to let him keep performing like that.'

In the same book, Kim described just how lucky Calvin Klein was to bag Jungkook as the face of the brand, an association that sent sales soaring within weeks, beating records previously set by its biggest names. Kim noted that at least three major fashion houses chased after Jungkook, but he turned them all down. 'From my time consulting in the industry, I know of at least three top fashion houses that fought hard to get him but were turned away,' she wrote, calling the Euphoria crooner one of the true sold-out kings. Being the youngest in the group, the South Korean vocalist's youth pull is unreal. He joined BTS when he was just 15, and his influence goes beyond music. From what he's wearing to what he's eating—if Jungkook touches it, it's off the shelves. Kim labelled him one of the finest and most beautiful men she's ever seen. 'From all the groups and members, Jungkook is the best-looking man I've ever seen, the one who caught me completely off guard. Imperfectly perfect. '

Germany's Adidas Originals, CLOT redefine sport style with summer drop

adidas Originals and Edison Chen continue their groundbreaking partnership with the release of a new collaborative collection of footwear, apparel and accessories - marking a bold evolution from traditional design to redefining the ideas of heritage, sport, and lifestyle, including a reimagined CLOT Stan Smith Espadrille and a unisex collection of club-ready apparel. In a new campaign to coincide with the collection, the tennis icon Stan Smith and CLOT Creative Director Edison Chen join South Korean actress and model Hoyeon, British artist and skateboarder Blondey, awarded F1 driver George Russell, and social personality and model Jashlem. Set against the backdrop of a country club that is at first glance pristine and traditional; rules are instead rewritten and not followed. From playful styling to surreal portrayals, the setting is subtly subverted to reflect a youthful energy and creative irreverence to the norm. The result is a reinterpretation of legacy codes through an unexpected, bold, and uniquely CLOT lens, with a nod to the heritage of adidas Originals. Adidas Originals and Edison Chen have unveiled a bold new collection blending heritage with streetwear, highlighted by the reimagined CLOT Stan Smith Espadrille. Fusing tradition and rebellion, the footwear features espadrille soles and intricate detailing in both white and black. Unisex club-ready apparel echoes varsity nostalgia with modern twists. "The Stan Smith is a silhouette I wanted to explore from the very beginning of our partnership," said Edison Chen, founder of CLOT . "Integrating an espadrille sole into such a legendary sneaker was a unique challenge, but it opened up new creative possibilities that reflect the spirit of both tradition and rebellion." The new CLOT Stan Smith espadrille sees the Stan Smith, named after the tennis legend, himself, undergo a transformative design process reflecting Edison Chen's evolved philosophy of cultural fusion, one that speaks through material choice rather than overt symbolism. An espadrille sole represents a masterful deconstruction of the iconic tennis silhouette, reimagining it through the lens of seasonal craftsmanship and contemporary streetwear sensibilities. A classic white version features a pristine deconstructed upper paired with a traditional espadrille sole, enhanced by intricate embroidery details that add texture and visual interest, while a black iteration pushes material boundaries through its use of a synthetic jute-inspired construction, addressing the practical challenges of dyeing natural fibers while maintaining the authentic espadrille aesthetic. This version features the same deconstructed upper philosophy, elevated by a distinctive chenille heel mustache detail that adds tactile richness and visual contrast. Both colorways feature CLOT and Stan Smith branding on the heel tabs, providing a subtle nod to the collaboration's prestigious lineage. The apparel offering includes cotton crocheted vest and striped polos with matching fringed shorts and a tailored camp shirt with subtle lace embroidery over the classic adidas three-stripes. A palette of forest green, cream, chocolate brown, and subtle hints of maroon and gold evoke varsity nostalgia while offering a fresh take on athletic-inspired silhouettes. This highly anticipated release reflects Edison Chen's mission to bridge East and West, old and new, and bring to life a new take on rich sporting heritage. Sudhanshu Pandey Recalls Craze For 'A Band Of Boys': ‘Girls Threw Undergarments At Us'

Last Updated: Sudhanshu Pandey recalls the craze of A Band Of Boys, calling it India's answer to the Backstreet Boys. From sold-out stadiums to wild fan moments, here's what he revealed. Long before Sudhanshu Pandey became a household name as Vanraj Shah in Anupamaa or stirred the pot in the reality game show The Traitors, he was part of a pop culture phenomenon that sent Indian fans into a frenzy—A Band Of Boys. In a recent interview with Zoom, the actor-singer looked back at the early 2000s when the all-male pop band—one of India's first—was riding high on the music charts and headlining stadium gigs. 'When A Band Of Boys came, we became a rage," Sudhanshu said. 'We were like competition for the Backstreet Boys, an answer to them from India. Our songs were on the Grammy list." Pandey was part of the original line-up from 2001 to 2005 and recalled the wild fanfare surrounding their performances. 'We were the first to perform in a stadium, in front of 20,000 to 25,000 people. There were no mobile phones back then. Girls used to throw their undergarments at us," he chuckled, describing the hysteria they experienced at live shows. After stepping away from the band to pursue his acting career, Sudhanshu recently made a grand return in August 2024, surprising fans with an official announcement that sent nostalgia-loving millennials into overdrive. In a heartfelt statement, A Band Of Boys shared, 'We are absolutely elated to have Sudhanshu back with us. It's been years since we performed together as a full band, and this reunion has truly brought back the memories of our early days." Known for chartbusters like Meri Neend, Gori, and Tera Chehra, the band—heavily inspired by The Backstreet Boys—was a pop sensation of its time and remains etched in the memories of early-2000s India. While his music career has come full circle, Sudhanshu's acting journey also saw a dramatic arc. He starred as the antagonist Vanraj Shah in Anupamaa from its 2020 premiere until his departure in 2024. He recently returned to reality TV with The Traitors, where he impressed viewers with his strategic gameplay and made it to the top 5, only to be evicted minutes before the winner was declared.
