MLB Rumors: Cardinals Could Move Eight-Time All-Star Before Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
The third base market could get a major shakeup ahead of the MLB trade deadline if the St. Louis Cardinals are able to find common ground regarding Nolan Arenado.
The eight-time All-Star was the subject of major trade rumors involving a few teams during the offseason. Teams like the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox reportedly had varying levels of interest in making a deal with St. Louis.
Ultimately, Arenado stayed up. That could change ahead of Thursday's MLB trade deadline, and if that does happen, it could have a major impact on the market.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand said there's renewed interest in Arenado among teams looking for third-base help, and St. Louis could trade him before the buzzer. This seems to either be a change of course or counter to past reporting, as a previous report indicated the Cardinals planned to keep Arenado.
Regardless, Feinsand offers one very important caveat: "The Cardinals will have to get approval from Arenado, who possesses a full no-trade clause and can veto any trade -- which he did in December after the Cardinals and Astros had agreed to a trade to send the eight-time All-Star to Houston."
Quite frankly, it's hard to conceptualize what sort of deal it would take to get an Arenado deal done. The 34-year-old is a long way from the player who was a perennial All-Star in Colorado. Arenado has been on an undeniable downturn, especially if you take out his 2022 season in which he finished third in MVP voting. His .237 batting average would be a career low, as would his .669 OPS, which is not just a sharp drop-off from his career mark (.847) but also a pretty significant 50-point drop from last year -- which was his career-worst until that point.
Then there's the contract. He's got two years left after this one on an eight-year, $260 million deal he signed with Colorado. As Feinsand notes, the Rockies are paying some of the deferred money, and the Cardinals could also help pay off some of the deal. Even so, that no-trade protection looms large, meaning teams would really have to thread the needle to get something done.
Perhaps the chance to play meaningful baseball would open up Arenado's market. The Cardinals were a painfully mediocre 54-53, 3 1/2 games out of National League wild-card contention entering Monday.

Nebraska wide receiver Jacory Barney Jr. named to Paul Hornung Award Watchlist

A rising Husker is now on an award watchlist ahead of the 2025 season. Sophomore wide receiver Jacory Barney Jr. is now on the Paul Hornung Award Watchlist, following his record-setting freshman year. The award is in honor of football Hall of Famer Paul Hornung and is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in college football. Hornung tore up the field both in college and on the professional level, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1956 and becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 1957 NFL Draft. He played in almost every position at Notre Dame, including quarterback, running back, punter, kicker, defensive back, and returner. Hornung continued his versatile career with the Green Bay Packers, serving as a multi-threat offensive back and a prolific kicker. He helped the Packers to four NFL championships, led the league in scoring for three years straight, set the single-season scoring record in 1960 with 176 points, and was named league MVP in 1961. Barney played in all 13 games for Nebraska as a true freshman, starting in four of them. He tied a school record for the most receptions by a Nebraska freshman, hauling in 55 passes for 447 yards. Barney also racked up 130 rushing yards and three touchdowns off 10 carries and returned 14 kickoffs for 285 yards. This helped Barney finish second on the team with 842 all-purpose yards. He ranked third nationally among all FBS freshmen in receptions. Sixers' Paul George ranked No. 18 small forward in history of the NBA

Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George went through a tough 2024-25 season. After being signed to a 4-year $212 million deal to go cross-country from the Los Angeles Clippers, George averaged only 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while his shooting percentages dropped to 43% overall and 35.8% from deep. Both numbers below his career norms. However, in George's defense, he dealt with a variety of injuries that slowed him down. When he is right, George is one of the best players in this league and nobody questions that. He is a 9-time All-Star and has led both the Indiana Pacers and the Clippers to the conference finals in his career. The Sixers are hoping they get that version of George in the upcoming season. HoopsHype ranked the top 20 small forwards in the history of the game and George came in ranked No. 18 on the list: Already boasting a borderline Hall-of-Fame resume, Paul George could undoubtedly finish even higher on this ranking if he bounces back from injury problems. An elite two-way player, George can score at a high level from three, the midrange and around the cup. The only things really missing from George's resume is an MVP award--he finished third in MVP voting in 2019--and a championship. He was close with the Pacers and the Clippers, but wasn't able to get over the hump. He will look to get healthy and help the Sixers do so before his deal is up in the next three years.
