India's Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement: What would the Suryakumar Yadav-led side look like? Who's IN & who's OUT?

The focus of the Indian cricket fraternity has shifted to the BCCI's squad announcement for the Asia Cup 2025 next week as the Men in Blue aim to defend their title, when the tournament kicks off in UAE from September 9. With the Indian cricket calendar at a standstill after the tour of Bangladesh was postponed to 2026, the buzz is around who's going to be selected and who's to left out for the continental showpiece. India have been clubbed alongside Pakistan, Oman and UAE in Group A. The Suryakumar Yadav-led side will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against UAE on September 9, followed by the high-octane clash against Pakistan four days later. India will finish their group assignments against Oman on September 19. If all goes well, India could face Pakistan two more times in the Super Four stage and in the final. If multiple reports are to be believed, India's Test captain Shubman Gill is making a comeback to the T20I side after more than a year following his 650 runs for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. There is a possibility Gill might open the innings with Abhishek Sharma with Sanju Samson coming at no.3. Captain Suryakumar will bat at no.4. Although Yashasvi Jaiswal doesn't feature in T20Is much, the southpaw might go as a backup opener. Shreyas Iyer, who had an impressive IPL 2025 for Punjab Kings as captain with 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07, is expected to make a comeback too, but will receive stiff competition by Tilak Varma for the no.5 spot. Varma has been in tremendous form for India recently, scoring 749 runs in 24 T20Is at a strike rate of 155.07. India could also pick one among Rinku Singh or Shivam Dube as a back-up in the middle order. Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel will be the two main all-rounders in the squad at no.6 and 7 with both India depth with their batting prowess. If India want more depth in batting, the Men in Blue could include Washington Sundar, who has been in phenomenal form in recent times. Samson will be keeping wickets while one among Ishan Kishan and Dhruv Jurel being picked as a back-up option. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana are likely to be the the frontline pacers in the squad with Pandya adding up to the fourth seamer's option. Varun Chakaravarthy will be the sole specialist spinner in the squad. However, it remains to be seen who among Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi make the squad as the second speciallist spinner. The Asia Cup 2025 will be played as T20Is, as a preparation for T20 World Cup 2026. Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Tilak Varma, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh/Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan/Dhruv Jurel, Kuldeep Yadav/Ravi Bishnoi, Yashasvi Jaiswal

‘You Can't Pick And Choose Matches': Mohammed Azharuddin Criticises Bumrah's Limited Test Appearances

Jasprit Bumrah's workload management has once again sparked debate in Indian cricket. The star fast bowler played only 3 of the 5 Tests in the recent India vs England series, missing the matches in Edgbaston and The Oval to manage his fitness. Despite his absence, India won both games, with Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Prasidh Krishna stepping up. Bumrah's reduced participation comes after a serious back injury that kept him out for a long time following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The team management and Bumrah had decided beforehand that he would feature in only three matches to avoid excessive strain. Azharuddin: Players Cannot Pick and Choose Matches Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin has voiced strong disapproval of this approach. Speaking to Mid-Day, Azharuddin said a player should be available for every match once selected. 'If there is an injury issue, then the Board and the player have to decide. However, I feel once you are in the team, you can't pick and choose your matches,' Azharuddin said. He stressed that representing the country requires full commitment, even if workload management is important. Others Stepped Up in Bumrah's Absence India's bowling unit handled Bumrah's absence remarkably well. Siraj played all 5 Tests, collecting 16 wickets in the two matches Bumrah missed. Akash Deep claimed a 10-wicket haul at Edgbaston, while Prasidh Krishna took 8 wickets at The Oval. Azharuddin noted that India was 'fortunate' that the rest of the attack delivered match-winning performances. 'There is workload, but at this level, you have to manage it. You are playing for the country,' he added. 'What happens if India needs Bumrah badly in a particular situation?' Bumrah is set to return in the Asia Cup 2025 starting next month. India's next Test series will be against the West Indies at home. With workload concerns likely to continue, head coach Gautam Gambhir will face the challenge of keeping Bumrah fit while ensuring he plays in key matches.

‘Khoon aur paani ek saath nahi beh sakte': Harbhajan Singh asks India to boycott Pakistan game at Asia Cup

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who is also an Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, has urged the Indian cricket team to boycott the game against Pakistan at the upcoming Asia Cup tournament in the UAE. Harbhajan was part of the India Champions team which refused to play the Pakistan Champions side, including in the semi-final, at the recent World Championship of Legends. India were the reigning champions after winning the inaugural WCL event, but with players like captain Yuvraj Singh, Shikhar Dhawan and Harbhajan against the idea of India playing Pakistan, the India Champions outfit forfeited the semis, and let Pakistan walk into the final, where they eventually lost. The Indian team had also refused to play in a group stage game against their arch-rivals. 'They (the Indian team) need to understand what is important and what is not. This is as simple as that. For me, the soldier who stands on the border, whose family often doesn't get to see him, who sometimes sacrifices his life and never returns home – their sacrifice is so immense for all of us. Compared to that, this is a very small thing, that we can't skip playing one cricket match. It's a very small matter,' Harbhajan was quoted as saying by The Times of India. 'Our government has the same stance, 'Khoon aur paani ek saath nahi beh sakte.' (blood and sweat cannot co-exist). It cannot be the case that there's fighting on the border, tensions between the two nations, and we go to play cricket. Until these big issues are resolved, cricket is a very small matter. The nation always comes first,' he added. He also added: 'Humare sarhad pe bhai khade hue hain, jo hume protect kar rahe hain, humare desh ko protect kar rahe hain — unke hausle dekho, wo kitna bada dil leke waha pe khade hue hain. Aur unke parivaar par kya beetati hai jab wo ghar wapas nahi aate. Aur hum cricket khelne chale jaate hain [At the border, our brothers are standing, protecting us and our country. Look at their courage, the big hearts with which they serve. Think about what their families go through when they don't return home. And here we are, playing cricket],' he said.
