
Singaporean chef Akmal Anuar's Malay restaurant in Dubai earns spot on Michelin Guide, Lifestyle News
Accomplished Singaporean chef Akmal Anuar, who already owns 10 restaurants around the world, has added another accolade to his already impressive list of achievements.
The F&B entrepreneur's restaurant Harummanis has been officially recognised in Dubai's latest Michelin Guide.
The Dubai-based restaurant took to social media last Friday (May 23) to announce the news.
The caption read: "We are officially in the Michelin Guide!"
In the post, the restaurant extended its heartfelt thanks to those who have supported it over the years—from guests and staff to family and friends.
Harummanis has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1992 as a local hawker stall in Teck Whye Lane serving authentic Malay cuisine.
It has since gone international, and the Dubai-based restaurant continues its mission to bring Malay flavours to the world stage.
At the heart of its success is Akmal's dedication to honouring the culinary legacy of his parents, who run the hawker stall.

On the same day Harummanis announced its Michelin recognition, Akmal shared a touching tribute post to his parents on social media.
"Today marks the day that I've fulfilled myself as a chef, son and a dad.
"To see my parents attend and be up on stage with them and receive their first Michelin award is a beautiful thing," he wrote.
While this is a first for Harummanis, it isn't Akmal's only experience with Michelin prestige. His other Dubai-based restaurant Goldfish was awarded the Bib Gourmand for the fourth year running.
His other Dubai-based restaurants include one-Michelin starred 11 Woodfire, the Japanese-Italian fusion Osteria Funkcoolio and patisserie Sam Tarts. What to expect at Harummanis
According to the official Michelin Guide website, dishes at Harummanis are praised for their "perfectly spiced" and "balanced" flavours.
Standout dishes that diners can look out for include the six-hour cooked rendang made with 20 spices and ayam geprek complemented by sambal belacan.
It is best to come in a group as dishes are made for communal dining.
If a trip to Dubai for a meal there isn't feasible for you, there's good news.
A local branch of Harummanis opened in Kampong Glam in November 2024, offering similarly refined takes on Malay classics right here in Singapore.

New French restaurant concept by Zouk Group to open in Bugis, Lifestyle News
Whether you're a French food connoisseur or just a foodie in general, you'll be glad to hear that there's going to be another option to choose from. Zouk Group announced that it will be launching its first-ever French restaurant concept The Plump Frenchman in Bugis on the week of June 16, the group said in a press release on Thursday (June 5). According to Andrew Li, CEO of Zouk Group, the restaurant's launch is something that he has always envisioned doing. "As a longtime French food enthusiast myself, I've always dreamed of creating a place that blends all the things I love about French cuisine and brasserie culture with the energy of our Zouk brand. It's wholesome, playful and full of personality," he stated. The 70-seater brasserie will focus on serving classic French comfort food. The menu is conceptualised by Zouk Group's Chief Culinary Officer Lorenz Hoja — who was the executive chef at French gourmet restaurant L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Singapore. During his time there, he had helped to secure two Michelin stars in 2016 and 2017. "French cuisine doesn't have to be rigid or overly refined, it should be delicious, generous, and deeply comforting. At The Plump Frenchman, we're bringing back the joy of slow meals, shared plates, and dishes made with real heart," the chef stated. Some examples of items on the menu include the Demi Poulet Rotisserie ($17++), a slow roasted chicken dish, and Chipirons ($16++), a baby squid dish stuffed with chorizo, parsley and garlic in olive oil and lemon. For dessert, there's the Tiramisu au Citron ($11++), a classic Italian dessert with an innovative touch — swapping traditional coffee for lemon as the main flavour. From Monday to Saturday, the restaurant will offer Menu de Canut, a curated selection of set menus. The selection will include a two-course set (one main and one dessert) at $25++, three-course set (one starter, one main and one dessert) at $35++, and four-course set (two starters, one main and one dessert) at $47++ and is available from 11.30am to 2.30pm and 5.30pm to 9pm. The new restaurant's interior is inspired by retro French aesthetics. 'You worried about us too much': Tay Ying has heart-to-heart talk with mum Hong Huifang before marriage
In an Instagram Reel uploaded yesterday (June 5), local actresses Hong Huifang and Tay Ying sat down together to have a heartfelt talk about their relationship as mother and daughter. S'porean actor Sunny Pang on filming Netflix's Havoc: 'They rehearse until everything is on point'
You might expect Hollywood heavyweights like Tom Hardy and Forest Whitaker to breeze through their scenes with effortless charisma and minimal prep. But that wasn't what Singaporean actor Sunny Pang observed on the set of Havoc, a recently released Netflix film. "They rehearse and rehearse until everything you see is on point," Pang, 53, said in a recent interview with The New Paper, describing the actors' meticulous approach to their craft. Pang, who has been in the industry for 23 years, had a front-row seat to observe the work ethic of industry giants like Hardy and Whitaker after landing a role in Havoc, an action thriller directed by Gareth Evans. Pang plays the character Ching, a loyal sidekick of the movie's main antagonist, Mother, portrayed by Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann. What struck him most was not their star power, but their humility and discipline. "It was very humbling when you see a person like that, with such high status - obviously highly paid - but without an ego at all," he said. "He [Whitaker] even sat down with us to talk about things, like, 'How are you? Where are you from?' You know, [he was] curious about things, curious about you." Their professionalism challenged any assumptions he might have had about celebrity behaviour. Pang recounted how the cast hung out on several occasions, sharing conversations and laughter. Whitaker even treated the team to drinks, he added, and it was such gestures that helped foster a strong sense of camaraderie among the team. On one occasion, the cast went out to watch Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings together, and Pang recounted the fond memory with a smile. "It was like a family," he said. "You step into a set that you don't know what to think, because you've been on an Asian set, never a Hollywood set. I was like, 'Okay, try not to panic'. And I see my friends (Yeo being one of them), and we start [saying] jokes and everything, and we know that we'll have a good time." For Pang, the journey to Hollywood has been anything but typical. He began his career as an actor in local productions such as Mediacorp's Code of Law. He was also a stunt choreographer for local short films before earning international recognition for his performances in Indonesian action films Headshot (2016) and The Night Comes for Us (2018). Recounting how professional and down-to-earth Whitaker was, Pang said: "Usually those Hollywood actors will not stay there for your reaction. That means the camera is on me, and I'm supposed to see everyone while giving lines to Yann Yann. But he stayed there. When asked if he wanted to retire and sit, he said, 'No, no, Sunny needs my eyeline.'" He also recalled receiving praise from Whitaker himself: "When I walked past him when I was done, I went to shake his hand and thank him. He said, 'What you did was cool, man. Keep it up!' I immediately texted my wife, 'Wah! Forest Whitaker said my acting is cool!' "I mean, it's such a rewarding time to see an Oscar-winning person give you that praise first, and to see him work. And you learn a lot of things," he added, describing the whole experience as a "masterclass" for him. Although the film is set in a fictional American city, it was shot primarily in Wales. After spending four months there immersed in filming and the local culture, Pang said the experience left a lasting impression - one he hopes to carry into Singapore's creative scene. "If you open your eyes a little bit more, you'll see a different side of what we can do. When I learn something from my time overseas, I come back, I don't keep it to myself. I want Singapore to evolve as well." He emphasised the need to encourage local talent to think differently and take creative risks. "What we lack is encouragement," he said. "Never doubt yourself, and always find ways to create opportunities." Looking ahead, Pang is turning his attention toward action directing. "Up to a certain point, you just have to let go (of acting)," he said. "You have to let the new generation evolve, using what you have experienced to let them evolve into something greater than what it is right now."
