Severe weather causes widespread power outages across KZN

The Citizen10-06-2025
Following a bout of severe weather, which brought heavy rainfall, strong winds and snowfall to KZN, Eskom has reported multiple power outages across the province.
The power utility's KZN industry support and stakeholder management Zethu Sonjica said 'significant disruptions' have been caused to the electricity supply in several regions.

Affected areas include Empangeni, Melmoth, Mtubatuba, Ulundi, Hluhluwe, Jozini, Nongoma and eShowe in the Zululand region, as well as other areas across KZN.
Restoration efforts under way
'Eskom has deployed technical teams to attend to faults in accessible areas. However, the utility notes that many roads remain closed due to flooding and snow, making access to some affected zones impossible at this time. Technicians remain on standby and will attend to these areas as soon as they become reachable,' said Sonjica.

Sonjica added that they understand the inconvenience and frustration this situation causes, and appealed to customers for patience and understanding as they work to restore power safely and as quickly as possible.
'Eskom has issued a strong warning to the public to treat all electrical infrastructure as live. Residents are urged to stay clear of fallen cables, damaged poles or any exposed wiring, and to report such hazards immediately to local authorities or via Eskom's reporting channels,' said Sonjica.

Eskom confident it will keep the lights on

JOHANNESBURG - No surprise power cuts expected for the rest of winter. This according to Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, who provided an update on the state of the grid. He says the energy availability factor is improving, averaging between 62% and 70%. The country has experienced no rolling blackouts since May 2025 proving Eskom's ability to meet the demand for power supply during the winter period. But to do this, the power utility found itself having to burn more diesel and that saw them spend R5-billion in the last four months.

Sinkhole develops on Dulcie Close in Lonehill

A sinkhole is developing on Dulcie Close, next to a storm water drain, raising concerns among residents and prompting local officials to respond. During a recent site visit, Ward 94 councillor David Foley observed that the damage appears to involve a collapse of the storm water infrastructure leading into the drain. 'It seems like the storm water infrastructure, leading into the storm water drain, has collapsed a bit.' Read more: Sinkhole appears on Craigavon road While he assessed the damage as minimal at this stage, Foley emphasised the potential risks if the issue is left unaddressed. 'I think it's minimal damage, but if left, it will grow to be a bigger hole. Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) needs to do an assessment, as I am not an expert in any way.' JRA has been notified of the situation. To ensure community safety, red cones have been positioned around the affected area, to warn motorists and pedestrians of the potential expressed appreciation for community engagement, highlighting the importance of active citizenry in addressing local issues. 'This is what I like, active citizenry to inform me of any challenges, which I escalate accordingly.' Residents are advised to exercise caution around the area until repairs are completed. Fourways Review reached out to JRA for comment. Kebogile Mafa acknowledged the inquiry. 'We will follow up with our depot and revert.'
