'LGBTQ+ representation in music is essential' says festival organisers

Daily Mirror6 hours ago

In spite of discriminatory laws being imposed against LGBTQ+ events, an organiser of this popular European music festival reveals why queer representation is more important than ever
With Pride Month in full swing, a festival has come out to champion the importance of queer performance and art. Every year, thousands flock to Budapest to experience one of Europe's most popular music festivals: Sziget, which begins August 6.
As a festival with a strong history of LGBTQ+ presence with its Magic Mirror stage, they have spoken out against Hungary's recent ban on Budapest's Pride march. Earlier this year, the Hungarian government passed amendment to the constitution enabling the government to ban public events by LGBTQ+ communities, as reported by NBC.

On their Instagram, Sziget stated: 'Despite the current developments in Hungary our commitment remains – and becomes more important. At Sziget, we stand for freedom, love, acceptance and expression – values we've upheld since the very beginning of the island of freedom.

They added: "These aren't just festival ideals – they're human rights. That's why we believe Pride belongs in the streets of Budapest – open, visible, and accessible to all.'
György Ujvári-Pintér, the program and venue manager of Magic Mirror, reveals the importance of LGBTQ+ representation at the festival, particularly in region which has faced pushback against LGBTQ+ rights. He tells The Mirror: 'Sziget Festival has a long tradition of openness, as its motto also stresses: it is the Island of Freedom (Sziget meaning Island in Hungarian).'
He continues: 'This attitude is broadly communicated by the festival… [Sziget] promotes tolerance and empathy, as well as the importance of understanding of what may seem 'distant' from one's own identity in their everyday life.
'Thus, I strongly believe that Sziget vehicles values that are important for the LGBTQ+ communities and makes them feel safe in a country of which political communication tends to create social tensions on many levels and punishes those who don't follow the so-called standards.'

In the past, the Magic Mirror has had to fight against discriminatory regulations imposed on it by Hungary's government. In 2022, the government demanded that the LBGTQ+ stage be made inaccessible to anyone under the age of 18 due to a law banning gay people from school educational materials or TV shows for under-18s. György told Dazed in 2023 that despite the pressure placed on them, they refused to follow these demands.
In this environment, ensuring representation for LGBTQ+ individuals in the music space is essential. From Gyorgy's perspective, queer identity has evolved and deepened greatly over the past 30 years. When choosing a line-up, he says: 'I always try to go with this flow and pick the newest tendencies while maintaining an overall vision on the community which is also composed of not-so-young audiences.'

This year, Magic Mirror's organisers plan to increase their focus on questions that aren't so readily visible – and to spotlight queer women. Just some of the acts, Gyorgy shares, will include Butch Tribute from Norway, who will perform a lecture on the notion of the Butch in the lesbian culture, as well as Australia 's YUCK Circus, who will focus on toxic masculinity from a female perspective.
Marga Alfeirao's LOUNGE – a contemporary dance – will also be featured, which Gyorgy says he programmed on International Female Orgasm Day (August 8th). There will also be a performance Queenz from London, which will see the group playing classic gay hits.
In terms of safety, Gyorgy says that they have a 'solid and loyal group of volunteers composed of queer people' who watch for others during the event. He adds: 'The very pacific and civilised culture of Sziget emanates the feeling of peace and understanding, so we are not used to confronting bullying or acts of violence.'

Coronation Street fans reeling over abrupt exit as they 'wish actor the best'

Coronation Street confirmed an offscreen exit for one character on the ITV soap on Monday with no final scenes set to air after the news an actor has left the show Some Coronation Street fans were shocked by an exit that aired rather abruptly on Monday night. An offscreen departure was confirmed for one character weeks after they were last onscreen. There was no announcement about the character or the actor playing them that confirmed an exit was due. ‌ Instead, The Mirror confirmed last week that the star in question had left the role and finished filming. We were told by an insider that Bobby Crawford actor Jack Carroll has already finished filming on the show, and his last scenes had already aired. ‌ There was no big exit for the actor or his character with him quietly leaving the show, while Bobby's recent decision to flee was thought to be temporary at the time. Now it's been confirmed that Bobby's trip abroad is in fact his exit plot, as he will not return to the show. His exit was announced in scenes on Monday night during a conversation with Betsy Swain and Lauren Bolton. They seemed as shocked as viewers were over the abrupt exit confirmation, with fans stunned that there would be no final scenes or goodbye from the character. Betsy confirmed that Bobby was not coming back and was gone for good. Viewers watching the moment were a bit stunned, given how quietly the character departed with nothing said. Not even his aunt Carla Connor acknowledged it with the chat with Betsy and Lauren being his exit announcement. While many fans had seen the news confirmed last week, others did not and even those that knew Jack had left the role didn't expect Bobby's exit to be as low key as it was. Taking to social media, one fan said: "Just watching todays episode and Lauren just spoke with Betsy, and Betsy just said 'Bobby's not coming back'. WTF is he just written out like that then? I didn't mind Bobby. A little boring but I didn't mind him when he first came and was getting to know his aunty Carla lol. Anyways who else is leaving I don't know about?!" ‌ Another fan said: "Most unceremonious exit of all time. Can't say I'll miss him but I do wish Jack Carroll the best in whatever he does next. A third viewer added: "Bobby!" A further comment read: "Quietest exit ever?" as another said: "I wasn't his biggest fan but kind of surprised that this is how he left, guess he won't be back for the inevitable Swarla wedding." A final comment read: "Such a low key exit that we never noticed he didn't return." ‌ Last year, fans were left puzzled regarding the whereabouts of the character with some believing he had secretly quit the show then. He featured quite heavily in the soap earlier in the year and then suddenly disappeared with no mention of where he was. It's now been confirmed that Bobby has made his exit from the soap, although the door has been left open for a return. A source told The Mirror: "Bobby has had a dramatic couple of years on the cobbles, but the time has come to bid farewell. "Actor Jack enjoyed his time on the soap, but it's time to move on. Viewers won't see the character exit the street as he's already left, with Jack filming his final scenes some time ago." "The door has been left open for Jack should he wish to come back to the show in the future. With his Aunty Carla there, Bobby will always have a place in Weatherfield." The character was last seen in the soap last month when he headed off to Spain to visit Simon Barlow. The trip came after he was accused of being Lauren Bolton's blackmailer.

The Wales legend revealed his ambitious plans on the red carpet at the premiere of F1 The Movie, where he spoke publicly for the first time about his bid to take over the Bluebirds. ‌ WalesOnline last week learned that a consortium which included Bale tabled an offer directly to Vincent Tan last week, however that offer was rejected. Since then, sources suggested the timing of Bale's name being put into the public arena suggested another move might well be on the cards. ‌ Bale, who retired from football in early 2023 following a final stint with LAFC after holding talks over a move to Cardiff, insists the group remains hopeful of securing a deal. Bale added: "We are trying to engage with Cardiff and more news will come out on that in the future but hopefully we can get something done." ‌ The 35-year-old's interest in Cardiff comes shortly after his former Real Madrid and Tottenham team-mate Luka Modrić was announced as a co-owner of rivals Swansea. Bale himself had previously been linked with a potential investment in Plymouth Argyle but that now appears to have been ruled out. Cardiff, who were recently relegated to League One for the first time since 2003, have just appointed Brian Barry-Murphy as their new head coach. He is his country's most-capped men's player with 111 appearances and their all-time top goalscorer with 41 goals. His glittering club career saw him win multiple Champions League titles with Real Madrid and inspire Wales to two European Championship finals and a first World Cup since 1958. Now, the former winger is aiming to make his mark off the pitch — and give something back to the club and the city where it all began. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

‘ITV putting a trans person on primetime signals that we're not going anywhere'

It's a strange time for Jordan Gray right now. On the one hand, she's got a brilliant new sitcom coming out on ITV – several years in the making – and is heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a long-anticipated follow-up to her Edinburgh Comedy Award-nominated 2022 show, Is it a Bird? On the other, well, as anyone with a sense of humanity will know, it's a scary time to be trans. First, the good news: Transaction, her TV show, is brilliant. Written by and starring Jordan, it's a six-part sitcom set in a supermarket night shift. She plays Liv, an affirmative action transgender hire who turns out to be a nightmare, but they can't get rid of her because, as the comedian puts it: 'What could be worse than firing a transgender person?' To say Liv is a nightmare is an understatement. She can be spiky, manipulative, punishing and lazy; it's refreshing to see a trans character not being presented as 'a suffering saint or a sexualised villain', as Jordan puts it. Liv does have an arc, though. 'She's a lone wolf character but really just wants to have a family, and then she finds this little weird dysfunctional family,' says Jordan. As in many of the best sitcoms, the cast is made up of characters thrown together from different walks of life (including Nick Frost as the relatable manager who's well-meaning and tries his best to be an ally but doesn't always get it right). And it's no accident that it has, in places, some of the spirit of Community (the surreal NBC sitcom set in a community college) and Tina Fey's 30 Rock. 'Those are my two favourite shows of all time,' says Jordan. 'So it has to hold up to that standard of joke frequency and ideally joke quality.' All those years of doing live comedy have taught her that making people laugh is absolutely the priority, and whatever agenda there is in there has to come second. As with Community, Transaction has some episodes that dash off in unexpected directions: there's film noir, sci-fi and, as you would hope from someone who does musical comedy with as much panache as Jordan does, there's one with a lot of music in it. Essex-born Jordan first shot to fame after reaching the finals in The Voice in 2016, gaining a new layer of credibility and acclaim with her hit live comedy show, Is It a Bird? This, in turn, led to a memorable appearance on Channel 4's Friday Night Live, in which she stripped naked at the end of a song. The response (from the grimmer sections of the internet) inspired the title of her new live comedy show, Is That a C*ck in Your Pocket, or Are You Just Here to Kill Me? She got a barrage of death threats, and she'll go into some detail about how that felt. 'This next show could have been very just cathartic and vitriolic and angry,' says Jordan. 'But it's me holding open a wound for an hour at a time. The poster and the artwork look like it's very aggressive – I'm holding two guns – but it's coming from the other side.' Then, in April, the UK Supreme Court ruled that you had to be biologically female to be legally recognised as a woman. A lot of women like Jordan, particularly those who are experiencing any sort of health concerns, are terrified they'll be put in the wrong hospital ward, or might end up falling through the cracks of a broken system. More Trending She does her best to be diplomatic and understanding towards those who consider the ruling a victory, and says it's interesting that elements of Transaction feel as if they were written a few weeks ago. 'When it feels like our lives are being made functionally unlivable, suddenly ITV's putting a transgender person right on the screen at that prime time, and that's really cool. It's a lovely signal for transgender people that we're not going anywhere. In fact, we've got to bop and weave and survive this next bit,' she says. 'When society has given you the signals that it's maybe time to throw in the towel because it's just going to get harder and harder, there's always dark thoughts in the background. And we're trying to be civil and trying to be happy all the time, trying to put on a brave face on it. I'm proud of myself and the work I've done, and everything is still underpinned with joy.'
