'LGBTQ+ representation in music is essential' says festival organisers
With Pride Month in full swing, a festival has come out to champion the importance of queer performance and art. Every year, thousands flock to Budapest to experience one of Europe's most popular music festivals: Sziget, which begins August 6.
As a festival with a strong history of LGBTQ+ presence with its Magic Mirror stage, they have spoken out against Hungary's recent ban on Budapest's Pride march. Earlier this year, the Hungarian government passed amendment to the constitution enabling the government to ban public events by LGBTQ+ communities, as reported by NBC.
On their Instagram, Sziget stated: 'Despite the current developments in Hungary our commitment remains – and becomes more important. At Sziget, we stand for freedom, love, acceptance and expression – values we've upheld since the very beginning of the island of freedom.
They added: "These aren't just festival ideals – they're human rights. That's why we believe Pride belongs in the streets of Budapest – open, visible, and accessible to all.'
György Ujvári-Pintér, the program and venue manager of Magic Mirror, reveals the importance of LGBTQ+ representation at the festival, particularly in region which has faced pushback against LGBTQ+ rights. He tells The Mirror: 'Sziget Festival has a long tradition of openness, as its motto also stresses: it is the Island of Freedom (Sziget meaning Island in Hungarian).'
He continues: 'This attitude is broadly communicated by the festival… [Sziget] promotes tolerance and empathy, as well as the importance of understanding of what may seem 'distant' from one's own identity in their everyday life.
'Thus, I strongly believe that Sziget vehicles values that are important for the LGBTQ+ communities and makes them feel safe in a country of which political communication tends to create social tensions on many levels and punishes those who don't follow the so-called standards.'

In the past, the Magic Mirror has had to fight against discriminatory regulations imposed on it by Hungary's government. In 2022, the government demanded that the LBGTQ+ stage be made inaccessible to anyone under the age of 18 due to a law banning gay people from school educational materials or TV shows for under-18s. György told Dazed in 2023 that despite the pressure placed on them, they refused to follow these demands.
In this environment, ensuring representation for LGBTQ+ individuals in the music space is essential. From Gyorgy's perspective, queer identity has evolved and deepened greatly over the past 30 years. When choosing a line-up, he says: 'I always try to go with this flow and pick the newest tendencies while maintaining an overall vision on the community which is also composed of not-so-young audiences.'
This year, Magic Mirror's organisers plan to increase their focus on questions that aren't so readily visible – and to spotlight queer women. Just some of the acts, Gyorgy shares, will include Butch Tribute from Norway, who will perform a lecture on the notion of the Butch in the lesbian culture, as well as Australia 's YUCK Circus, who will focus on toxic masculinity from a female perspective.
Marga Alfeirao's LOUNGE – a contemporary dance – will also be featured, which Gyorgy says he programmed on International Female Orgasm Day (August 8th). There will also be a performance Queenz from London, which will see the group playing classic gay hits.
In terms of safety, Gyorgy says that they have a 'solid and loyal group of volunteers composed of queer people' who watch for others during the event. He adds: 'The very pacific and civilised culture of Sziget emanates the feeling of peace and understanding, so we are not used to confronting bullying or acts of violence.'

But the stage invader isn't an overzealous fan, but is instead something that could be even scarier - a wasp. Thom tells Robbie in the clip: "There's a wasp right on you." As the Angels singer moves out of the way, the wasp flies between the two, and Thom can be heard screaming while Robbie tells the insect to "f**k off". He then also jokingly tells the crowd to "finish the gig yourselves" as he attempts to run off stage away from the angry wasp. WARNING: The below TikTok video contains strong language. The crowd descends into laughter as Thom lifts his guitar as a weapon to fight off the wasp, before declaring to Robbie that he's "so scared". Robbie then stated: "I'm not. I'm butch." Robbie asks Thom if he would be willing to play guitar for some of his songs, but is cut off mid-sentence as the wasp comes back for more and he's forced to pull off the scarf he's wearing and throw it into the crowd to try and deter the insect. The video then cuts to Robbie and Thom performing Take That's hit Relight My Fire together, before Thom once again has to run away as the wasp returns to taunt him some more. Commenters on the video were left in stitches by the duo's antics, as people joked they needed "security" to escort the wasp off stage so the musicians could get back to the show. One person said: "Where's security when you need them?" Another added: "When the best concert ever becomes a stand-up comedy show."

A travel influencer has shared her thoughts on three European cities she'd never return to after visiting 17 urban destinations across the continent last year A travel influencer has revealed the three European destinations she wishes she'd avoided after exploring 17 different. Last year, Sooyeon, a social media star from San Francisco undertook an ambitious European adventure. Despite enjoying much of her time on the continent and immersing herself in the local cultures, there were three holiday destinations that left her feeling somewhat underwhelmed. Taking to her TikTok account @ she shared her candid travel insights: "These are three cities I probably would've skipped," though she was quick to clarify: "Doesn't mean these are bad destinations, I just didn't enjoy them as much as other cities." Madrid Following a two and a half day stay in Spain's capital after visiting Barcelona, she confessed that the coastal city had captured her affections, leaving Madrid feeling rather lacklustre by comparison. She revealed: "The main reason is because I went to both Madrid and Barcelona on the same trip, and I feel like Madrid didn't have as many interesting things to do for me at least, other than the palace and museums. ...If I were to do this trip again, I would probably skip Madrid and spend more time in Barcelona." Catania Catania proved to be another destination that failed to meet Sooyeon's expectations. Located on Sicily's eastern coastline, the ancient port city appeared to be a perfect 'Italian getaway' destination in theory, yet the reality didn't match her aspirations. Sooyeon explained: "The city just felt a little run down and not the safest. People were also not afraid to stare at you - I'm sure they weren't trying to be rude or mean, but it felt a little uncomfortable as a female traveller." Berlin Berlin also featured on Sooyeon's disappointing destinations list, though her concerns about the German capital differed from her gripes with Catania and Madrid. She praised Berlin's 'welcoming' atmosphere and its collection of 'cool cafes, shops and roads', yet felt something was missing. "Don't get me wrong, I would love to live in Berlin," Sooyeon confessed. "But, as a tourist, I feel like the main attractions are history museums which I personally am not the biggest on, especially because at this point on my trip I was getting severe museum fatigue." She also observed that the food scene was rather international, making it trickier for her to discover genuine local dishes, which stays her number one priority when travelling. "The food scene was also pretty international, so I didn't find as many options for authentic local food, which is something I try to eat everywhere I go. Again, this is just my experience - what doesn't work for me, could work for you." Sooyeon's honest assessments triggered a wave of reactions on TikTok, with users split over her views on these beloved locations. One user passionately defended Madrid, declaring: "I will not accept any Madrid slander! I've been like four times and it's an incredible city." Others rushed to defend Catania, with one person pleading: "Everyone here pls don't skip Catania," whilst another commenter challenged her assessment of Berlin's cleanliness, hitting back: "Berlin is clean? What girl?"
