On Sunday, fans and analysts will get their first true look at Ben Johnson's impact since taking over as head coach of the Chicago Bears. Johnson is known for his offensive acumen during his time guiding the Detroit Lions' high-powered attack. Now he faces the challenge of leading an entire team.
In the preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins, the spotlight will be on a squad coming off a 5-12 season.
At the same time, several players will be aiming to impress Johnson in hopes of locking down a starting role before the regular season kicks off.
According to Bears reporter Larry Mayer, three Bears players in particular, Ozzy Trapilo, Dominique Robinson and Nahshon Wright, will be under the microscope as they battle for starting spots.
Ozzy Trapilo
Many believe Ozzy shares the offensive qualities that made his father, Steve Trapilo, so effective. At Boston College, Ozzy was considered irreplaceable on the line, and whether he can translate that success to the big league remains to be seen.
The rookie second-round pick has seen extensive work with the first-team offense at left tackle throughout camp. According to Mayer, a strong showing against Miami could solidify his spot atop the depth chart.
"It will be especially crucial to see how the 6-8, 316-pounder fares against speed rushers, a quality that is highly valued in the NFL, which is loaded with game-wrecking edge rushers," Mayer added.
Dominique Robinson
Ben Johnson has taken notice of Robinson, who has delivered several outstanding reps during training camp.
"Robinson will enhance his chances of earning a role on defense if he shows he can make splash plays and finish at the quarterback in preseason games," Mayer wrote.
Nahshon Wright
The fifth-year pro is another defensive player turning heads in camp.
Mayer noted: "The 6-4, 199-pounder likely would improve his chances of winning a starting job if he shows he can win at the line of scrimmage and cover quick, smaller, twitchy receivers, which often can be a challenge for tall cornerbacks."
Expect plenty of surprises this preseason, as several players look to seize the opportunity to catch Ben Johnson and Co.'s attention.
The Bears vs Dolphins game will kick off on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Soldier Field.

NASCAR's Connor Zilisch breaks collarbone after falling from atop car celebrating Xfinity Series win

Connor Zilisch suffered a broken collarbone after a scary fall while celebrating his NASCAR Xfinity Series win at Watkins Glen on Saturday. Zilisch was in victory lane when he climbed to the top of his car to celebrate like winners traditionally do. As he did, he slipped and tumbled headfirst into the concrete below. He was immediately tended to by medical personnel and transported away from victory lane on a gurney. After he was taken to a local hospital, Zilisch tweeted Saturday night that he had broken a collarbone and that CT scans on his head were clear. His dad Jim had a sense of humor after the fall too. Zilisch, 19, is one of NASCAR's top prospects and an exceptional road course racer. Saturday's win at the Glen was his sixth Xfinity Series victory of the season and he's currently atop the points standings. However, he's likely to miss multiple races because of the injury. He drives for JR Motorsports, the team co-owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his sister Kelley Earnhardt Miller, in NASCAR's No. 2 series. It's not the first injury that Zilisch has suffered this season, either. While racing for the win at Talladega in the spring, Zilisch's car went sliding and hit head-first into the inside wall on the backstretch. He suffered a lower back injury in the wreck and missed a race. Zilisch was also scheduled to start Sunday's Cup Series race for Trackhouse Racing. His No. 87 car has been withdrawn from the race as a result of his fall. Trackhouse is widely expected to promote Zilisch to the Cup Series full-time in 2026 as Daniel Suarez is leaving the team at the end of the season.
