Ishan Kishan Turns 27: How His Record-Breaking Knocks Changed Indian Cricket
Happy Birthday Ishan Kishan: From IPL fireworks to a historic double ton, Ishan Kishan has delivered some jaw-dropping performances.
Happy Birthday, Ishan Kishan: Friday, July 18, marks the birthday of one of India's bright young wicketkeeper-batters, Ishan Kishan, who was born in the city of Patna in Bihar in 1998. Kishan, a multifaceted cricketer, is known for his tremendous ball-striking when in full flow. He rose through the ranks with stellar performances for Jharkhand and India A before going on to represent India and becoming an integral part of former IPL champions Mumbai Indians.
Kishan made his first-class debut for Jharkhand at the tender age of 16 in 2014 and immediately made his mark with a hundred and five fifties in his first ten first-class matches.
Spotted early by India's junior selectors, he was named captain of India's U19 side ahead of the 2016 World Cup in Bangladesh, where his team finished runners-up to the West Indies.
The attacking left-hander made an impressive return to the Ranji Trophy scene, amassing 799 runs from ten games at an average of over 57 in the 2016-17 season with an eye-catching best of 273 versus Delhi.
Kishan, who had an initial two-year stint in the IPL with the now-defunct Gujarat Lions, made his Mumbai Indians debut in 2018 and went on to enjoy a magnificent stint where he featured in their 2019 and 2020 winning teams. Less than a year later, Kishan was awarded his maiden India cap in the T20 International series against England at home.
Ishan Kishan's Career Stats
Kishan made his T20I debut in March 2021 before going on to represent the country in ODIs the same year in July versus Sri Lanka. He also earned a surprise Test call-up for the 2023 tour of West Indies, making his debut in whites at Dominica.
Kishan has played 2 Tests, 27 ODIs and 34 T20Is for India with close to 2,000 runs next to his name.
He has scored 796 runs at a strike rate of 124.37 with six fifties in T20Is, while also smashing 933 runs in ODIs at an average of 42.40 and strike rate of 102.19 with one hundred and seven half-centuries.
Kishan's solitary ton in One-Day Internationals became a historic one as he became one of only five Indians to record a double century in the 50-over format with a scintillating knock of 210 in December 2022 versus Bangladesh.
A flexible cricketer, willing to play any role assigned to him, Kishan has also been a star in the IPL with 2,998 runs from 119 matches at a strike rate of 137.64. Kishan's best IPL season to date came with Mumbai Indians in 2020 when his massive 516 runs at 145.76 helped the Rohit Sharma-led side clinch their fifth IPL trophy. He has since moved on and played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025 after being released by MI.
Ishan Kishan's Top 5 Knocks
210 vs Bangladesh, Chattogram ODI 2022
A tremendous knock saw Kishan etch himself in the record books as only the fifth Indian batter to get a double century in ODIs. His breathtaking assault featured 24 fours and 10 sixes as his 131-ball 210 helped India beat Bangladesh with ease.
93 vs South Africa, Ranchi ODI 2022
Apart from skill, Kishan displayed strong temperament when he hammered a strong South African attack for a knock of 93 off just 84 deliveries and helped ease a tricky run-chase to secure a series-levelling victory for India in Ranchi.
89 Vs Sri Lanka, Lucknow T20I 2022
Kishan's highest score for India in T20 Internationals came in Lucknow against Sri Lanka in early 2022 as he smashed the visitors for 89 off 56 deliveries, including 10 fours and 3 sixes. Kishan was awarded the Player of the Match in India's heavy win.
99 vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru, IPL 2020
Kishan's courageous knock nearly helped Mumbai Indians hunt down the target of 202 set by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The brave wicketkeeper-batter blasted 99 off 58 deliveries to almost take MI home before they finished with a tie and lost the Super Over in Dubai.
106* vs Rajasthan Royals, IPL 2025
Announcing his arrival for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kishan smashed an unbeaten 106 off just 47 deliveries in his new team's opening game of the IPL 2025 versus former champions Rajasthan Royals. His blistering innings featured 11 fours and 6 sixes as Kishan helped SRH post a jaw-dropping 286/6 in their victory.

Sacked from India job, former KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar lands top role at Women's Premier League franchise
Abhishek Nayar, who was sacked as India men's team assistant coach in less than a year into the job, has been appointed as the head coach of the Women's Premier League (WPL) franchise UP Warriorz on Friday for the next season. Nayar's appointment comes after UP Warriorz parted ways with Jon Lewis in June earlier this year after three seasons. Nayar, who played three ODIs for India in his short stint, has been a stalwart in Mumbai cricket. Since his retirement in 2019, Nayar served as an assistant coach for Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He was also the lead coach of the KKR academy in 2018 and also served as Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) head coach in Caribbean Premier League in 2022. "Bringing Abhishek Nayar on board as head coach feels like a natural and exciting step forward for UP Warriorz," UPW COO and director of cricket Kshemal Waingankar told ESPNcricinfo. "When someone of Abhishek's calibre became available, it was a no-brainer. Few in Indian cricket bring the same depth of experience when it comes to shaping players and shaping winning cultures. 'In just the past 18 months alone, Abhishek has been part of three championship-winning campaigns, each in a different role, each leaving a lasting impact. We are thrilled to have him lead a Warriorz side that's united, fearless and hungry to grow. With Abhishek at the helm, we believe this group can do something truly special.' Although Nayar has never coached a women's team, he did work with the UP Warriorz players in a week-long off-season camp in August 2023 in Bengaluru. He has also worked with a number of international and uncapped players over the years to hone their skills. Having worked with mentor Gautam Gambhir at KKR, Nayar had built a good rapport with the former India opener and their partnership played a key role in the Kolkata-based franchise lifting the IPL title for the third time in 2024. With Gambhir being appointed as Indian men's team head coach, he also took Nayar into the national setup, thus joining as an assistant coach in 2024. However, with the Indian team faltering heavily against the likes of New Zealand (home) and Australia (away) in Tests, Nayar got the axe in April. He then returned as the KKR assistant coach midway into IPL 2025.

WPL 2026: UP Warriorz appoints Abhishek Nayar as head coach
UP Warriorz has made the appointment of Abhishek Nayar as its new head coach ahead of next season's Women's Premier League. Nayar played a key role as assistant coach in helping Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinch the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2024, and was also a part of the coaching set-up for Team India when it won the Champions Trophy earlier this year. A former Indian international all-rounder and a key figure in Mumbai's domestic cricket setup, Nayar has seamlessly transitioned into one of the most influential coaches in the Indian cricketing ecosystem. His journey as a coach has been defined by his ability to mentor and nurture young talent and help top athletes push past their limits. This isn't Nayar's first time being associated with the UP Warriorz since he also spent a brief stint with the team during its off-season training camps after the inaugural season. The franchise is confident that him stepping into the head coach role will bring consistency and strength to the team's preparations. During his time with the Indian team, he worked closely with the top batters in the team, and KL Rahul personally credited Nayar for helping him regain his form in the T20 format. Among the other players he has worked with behind the scenes are also the likes of former India captain Rohit Sharma and former India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik. Speaking on his appointment, Nayar said, 'I really enjoyed my time working with the UP Warriorz before and I'm thrilled to take on this new role. WPL is a fantastic platform for women's cricket and I'm looking forward to working closely with the management to build a strong team for Season 4. UP Warriorz already have a strong foundation in place, and I believe we can build something truly special. There is incredible potential and I will give it my all to help win their first-ever title this season' Jinisha Sharma, Director, Capri Sports, stated, 'We believe that this appointment shows our strong intent to elevate the team's performance and push for greater success in the upcoming WPL season. With Abhishek Nayar's leadership, experience in coaching at the highest level and ability to bring out the best in players, the franchise is confident of a strong showing this season.'
