GST row: Small traders launch 3-day agitation in Karnataka
As part of the protest, traders have stopped serving milk, coffee, and tea to customers at their shops, and many wore black badges.
A decision has been made to boycott the sale of cigarettes, beedis, and all tobacco-related products on Thursday (July 24). On Friday (July 25), the traders plan to shut down their shops and establishments and stage a massive protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru.
The traders are also considering launching an indefinite strike unless the GST notices are withdrawn.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has called a meeting with aggrieved parties and trade bodies at his official residence in Bengaluru. However, Karnataka State Karmika Parishat President Ravi Shetty, reacting to CM Siddaramaiah's move to address the issue, stated that his organisation would not attend the meeting.
'We initiated the agitation against the GST notices to traders. But the state government has invited only those trade bodies that are already paying taxes. The meeting should have involved small traders who have been issued GST notices demanding payments of up to Rs 50 lakh. Our organisation received the invitation merely for formality. We will not be attending the meeting,' Ravi Shetty stated.
Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi has clarified that the GST notices issued to small-scale traders in Karnataka are the doing of the state government, and not the Central government.
The Karnataka BJP has slammed the Congress-led government in Karnataka over the alleged issuance of GST tax notices to small traders, accusing it of obstructing the Centre's digital revolution. The party has also announced the launch of a helpline to safeguard the interests of small traders in the state in the backdrop of a row over GST.
Hitting back at the BJP, the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar said that the BJP is trying to fix the Congress government in the state over the GST row.
'BJP is trying to eat the banana and wipe it on our nose by issuing GST notices to small traders,' the Deputy Chief Minister said, while targeting opposition BJP in the state.

Server down becomes code for graft in Karnataka's sub-registrar offices
Bengaluru: Karnataka's ambitious e-governance drive, meant to fast-track services and curb corruption, is increasingly turning into a digital smokescreen for graft — especially in sub-registrar offices. Across the state, the phrase "server down" has morphed into a thinly veiled signal for citizens to grease palms to move even routine paperwork. What was pitched as a corruption-free system has, in many places, become a sophisticated tool to collect illegal payments. "E-governance in Karnataka was envisioned as a tool to ensure transparency and accountability in govt functioning, but its implementation has fallen short of expectations," said civic activist Vivek Menon. "While digital platforms were meant to reduce human intervention and curb corruption, loopholes in the system have instead given rise to new forms of graft." Menon said staff now manipulate digital records, delay online approvals, and exploit citizens unfamiliar with technology. "Further, being gatekeepers for approvals, officials cite delays and impose hurdles to extract money for clearances. The lack of robust auditing and cyber-vigilance has allowed a tech-savvy few to misuse the system for personal gain," Menon said. Frequent crashes in the Kaveri property registration system enabled staff and middlemen to collect unofficial payments between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000. Regular visitors claim the demand has now gone up by 20%. E-khata services, designed to avoid human interference, are also being misused. Citizens in Bengaluru and other cities say they were made to pay Rs 3,000–15,000 extra for what was supposed to be an end-to-end online service. "Sub-registrar offices have introduced mandatory 'tax' to get servers working," said multiple users on social media. Vinay Chenagappa, a Bengaluru resident, said, "I was told the digital portal was 'down'—and directed to pay intermediaries outside the office. Money brings everything 'up'. Pay some to shops outside the sub-registrar office. Sad but it's the truth, without mandatory tax it's very difficult to get registration done… Registration offices have a daily collection… Before closing for the day, every single staff member gets his/her share. " Real estate analyst Ravikanth Uday shared a similar experience: "The digital divide has further marginalised the poor and uneducated, making them more vulnerable to exploitation. E-governance should have empowered such citizens, but in many instances, it has become another bureaucratic hurdle. Without stronger oversight, transparency, and citizen engagement, Karnataka's digital transformation risks becoming a sophisticated facade for old-school corruption. " Complaints also point to lopsided enforcement. "Middle-class citizens face scrutiny while real estate tycoons and builders proceed unchecked as they work under different 'payment' systems," said one user. Another added, "Without greasing palms it's very difficult... Officials demand Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000 just to complete legal formalities." In July 2024, the govt introduced mandatory counselling for sub-registrars and senior staff before transfers, hoping to break entrenched local networks. But the move has had little effect. Police examine videos after BJP councillors booked for altercation with Ludhiana mayor
Ludhiana: Police in the city are reviewing video footage following a heated altercation at the Zone-D office of mayor Inderjit Kaur that resulted in charges against two BJP councillors, the husbands of three women councillors, and more than 20 others. The incident unfolded recently, when BJP members of the house arrived at the municipal corporation office seeking a meeting with the mayor. Tensions escalated, leading to what police describe as intimidation and physical confrontation. A complaint filed by assistant sub-inspector Sudagar Singh, who serves as the mayor's security officer, suggests that the situation became hostile after several people entered the office claiming to be councillors. Mayor Kaur alleged that not all present were elected. As discussions grew heated, three men — Kulwant Singh Kanti, Vishal Gulati, and Jatinder Goryan, all spouses of sitting councillors — allegedly argued with and threatened the mayor, restraining her from leaving the office. Councillors Mukesh Khatri and Gauravjit Singh Gora were also accused of aggressive behaviour and reportedly attempted to assault the mayor before allegedly manhandling the ASI. Following the ASI's intervention, the group reportedly continued with abusive language before leaving the premises. Division Number 5 police have filed an FIR against councillors Gauravjit Singh Gora (Ward 80), Mukesh Khatri (Ward 76), Kulwant Singh Kanti (spouse of Kuldeep Kaur, Ward 33), Vishal Gulati (spouse of Ruchi Gulati, Ward 73), Jatinder Goryan (spouse of Ruby, Ward 17), and 20 unidentified individuals under charges of obstructing a public servant, assault, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation. Police say all relevant video evidence is under review and no further arrests or action will be taken until they have examined the footage thoroughly. The BJP members of the MC house, meanwhile, have maintained a sit-in protest outside the mayor's office since Friday night, demanding an apology from mayor Inderjit Kaur over alleged misbehaviour.
