2025 Lexus LX 700h review: A surprisingly spry giant

When Lexus comes calling and invites you out to Napa, CA, to test the all-new Lexus LX 700h, the only acceptable answer is, 'How soon can I pack my bags?'
Despite living in California since I came to America back in 2009, I have never had a good reason to visit Napa. Although I'm no sommelier by any stretch, the rolling hills of California's Wine Country would prove to be the perfect picturesque landscape for Lexus's rolling mansion.
With a wheelbase of 112.2 inches and a curb weight between 6200 and 6300 lbs, this is a beastly machine from any angle. The row of ten that Lexus had lined up for us was a menacing bunch. It was like staring down the Spartans from 300, towering over you and ready to pounce at a moment's notice.
We were given a book of trails hand-picked by the Lexus team to be both picturesque and a great test of the LX 700h's road capabilities. We paired our phones with the wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capabilities, scanned a QR code, and the routes were expanded onto the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display.My first partner of the day was the $141,350 Ultra Luxury trim, finished in Atomic Silver and a gorgeous contrasting 'Sunflare' interior with diamond-stitch semi-aniline leather-trimmed seats. Surrounding the various interior surfaces was an equally as opulent 'Takanoha Wood Trim,' bringing a touch of Lexus's home turf to the SUV. Any luxury feature you would expect from a vehicle of this caliber was present, from heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, massaging front seats, and even an automatic door closer.
One new feature that Lexus added to the 700h is a 'cool box' in the center console that works with the AC system. Our guide told us that this was inspired by the way organizations like Doctors Without Borders would retrofit the center consoles in previous Lexus SUVs to transport penicillin to third-world countries. Yes, it can also hold your soda cans.
Despite the stormy weather that weekend, the LX felt awfully planted and took turns like it was on rails. The 3.4L twin-turbo V6 hybrid setup under the hood put out 457 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque through the 10-speed automatic transmission, and you could feel all of it. Giving it the beans brought a welcome growl from beyond the dash, and the boost gauge on the digital cluster corresponded perfectly with your head's intimate meeting with the headrest. It's no Lucid, but don't underestimate it.
That does, of course, lead to less-than-ideal gas mileage. During my driving, I managed to pull off a 15 mpg average. Compared to the EPA-estimated 20 mpg combined, that's not too far off. However, the average 700h buyer is not putting "high mpg figures" on their checklist when buying a car like this. View the 20 images of this gallery on the original article
This wasn't the off-roady version, that honor goes to the Overtrail, but even the Ultra Luxury came with a two-speed transfer case with a Torsen LSD, adaptive variable suspension, active height control, a center locking differential, and multi-terrain select. The 22-inch wheels might be wearing far-too-thin rubber, but the option is there should you wish to partake in it.
After a short photoshoot session by a lake, I continued along on my route back to our base. Winding through the hills of Napa, with the gentle pattering of raindrops hitting the windshield, I indulged in the plush, heated, and massaged seats. One slight complaint was the burial of the massage feature behind two different menus. This was especially perplexing since everything else, like the AC controls and all of the other heated surfaces, was easily accessible with physical buttons.
Speaking of menus and functions, the aforementioned 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display is your gateway into Lexus's buttery-smooth interface that will show you anything you want to know at a moment's notice. It is paired with a smaller multi-information display that relays useful information like AC/heated seat level, brake/accelerator percentages, drive mode, and off-road specifics like 4WD mode and incline level.
It was also during this 40-minute ride back that I decided to test the capabilities of the 25-speaker, 2,400-watt Mark Levinson Reference Surround Sound system. Believe me when I tell you that if a choir of Angels descended from Lexus HQ and serenaded me personally, it would not sound as good as Prince's Purple Rain sounded at near-max volume. The sheer clarity and bass of the system, even at that volume, was astounding. When Prince started shredding, I started melting.
And if I were to have passengers, rest assured that they too would be unwilling for the journey to end as the dual 11.4-inch screens on the back of the front headrests would keep them more than entertained.Following a short lunch, it was time for the $118,010 Overtrail to wow me in a different manner. Sitting on smaller 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, the Overtrail is Lexus's first-party answer to the vast off-road support that their previous GX generations had. While the powertrain is the same, the Overtrail also gains electronically controlled front- and rear-locking differentials, which will come in handy later. The interior retains the plush nature of the 700h, although it loses some of the less-off-road-specific features like the illuminated door sills and second-row massaging captain's chairs.
Unlike last time when we were handed a book of routes to choose from, Lexus had instead programmed a specific route into our GPS systems for this one, and I'm glad they did. The surrounding forests and small town roads leading to the Ink Grade Winery off-road course were the perfect backdrop for my Nori Green Overtrail, and I effortlessly conquered the bendy, wet asphalt atop my six-figure steed.
What followed was the kind of terrain that this SUV was built for. Lexus had spent the past day digging an off-road track to flex what this trim was capable of. Upon arrival, we were instructed to lock our center and rear differentials, put the 700h in 4L, and cruise on through. Between the 45-degree incline, the near two-wheel lean, and the bumper-level puddles, this is what I imagined a Jeep aficionado's playground to look like. I have never felt so horrified of tipping over a car, yet so ecstatic that I had pushed through that I wanted to do it again immediately. View the 20 images of this gallery on the original article
The ride back was, unfortunately uneventful, and my adrenaline wore down eventually. As I drove back to base, I reminisced on the ironic circumstances that had just allowed me to scale up mounds of mud in a six-figure SUV with my heated seats, steering wheel, and massaging seats on full blast. If there was ever a vehicle that embodied the feeling of staying at a Ritz Hotel in the middle of the Brazilian jungle, the Lexus LX 700h Overtrail would be it.
On the other hand, if the thought of leaving your Los Angeles mansion troubles you, yet you sometimes get the urge to shorten your commute by hitting the dunes, the Lexus LX 700h Ultra Luxury can handle that.
And as Belinda Carlisle was saying through the Mark Levinson sound system, heaven is indeed a place on earth, and I believe I found it at the wheel of the Lexus LX 700h.

Lexus might be a mostly SUV-focused brand these days, with a packed lineup that moves up from the entry-level UX through the NX, RX, three-row TX, and then to the off-road GX and LX models. But even if there are two Lexus-badged SUVs for every Lexus-badged car, the ES sedan remains an anchor product in the family alongside the popular RX crossover. It was one of the first Lexus nameplates ever, debuting more or less at the same time as the splashier original LS400 in 1989, and although the large midsize sedan might fade into suburban backdrops across America, that's largely because of its ubiquity. Lexus sells a healthy number of them annually, with more than 40,000 finding new driveways last year — and that was the seventh-generation ES's sixth year on sale. Soon, a new ES will be on sale, and you're looking at it. This is the 2026 Lexus ES, which made its big debut on the other side of the world at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show last month, now has U.S.-specific details to go with it. If you thought ES sedans were boring and purchased by old people or golfers, then the new ES probably looks like it'd land amongst the country-club set like Rodney Dangerfield's bright-red Rolls-Royce convertible from Caddyshack. In reality, though, each ES has looked younger and fresher; the outgoing model introduced in 2019 is already subtly sexy, with a long, low profile and undulating curves saucy enough to make you forget the more staid 1990s and 2000s versions. So even if the 2025 ES was still an isolation machine designed for quiet, trouble-free operation, old people (or whoever you think is buying an ES) don't get to corner the market on reliable, luxurious, and low-key attractive sedans, do they? Within that context, the new ES isn't such a wild departure from the current model — at least, not stylistically. The full-width taillight, sharp corner elements and pointy lighting are adapted from 2023's LF-ZC concept car, although the overall shape is less Blade Runner and more, well, outgoing ES sedan. We think it looks generally attractive, with a little more edge than the 2019–2025 ES, a lot less grille, and with racy bodyside sculpting we might need to get used to. And given the market direction sedans are taking of late — generally, they're aiming for a sportier or sexier vibe, to justify skipping the SUVs everyone else seems to want these days — the ES's new look seems not only appropriate, but smart. 2025 BMW X3 xDrive redesign: How it's bigger, bolder and more exciting Hybrid or electric, take your pick It's what is underneath that new body that marks the real departure for Lexus's midsize luxury sedan. That's because this is the first mainstream Lexus to be designed as a "dual-platform vehicle," as Lexus puts it, with both internal-combustion-engine and all-electric variants sharing a body. This concept isn't new — BMW, a competitor, has been selling dual-purpose ICE/EV cars for a few years now, including the i4/4 Series Gran Coupe, i5/5 Series and i7/7 series — but it's a first for Lexus, and the first Toyota product since the third-generation RAV4 (which offered a Tesla-powered electric setup) to pull off the engineering feat of packaging one platform for multiple powertrain styles. Details are sketchy so far, but the 2026 ES sits on what sounds like a newer version of the old ES's TNGA-K platform, adapted for those ICE and EV powertrains. Lexus has scaled the car up, as few new vehicles are smaller than those they replace, but here it's probably to make room for enough batteries under the ES's floor to deliver competitive driving range. The wheelbase is stretched by a massive 3.1 inches to 116.1, and overall length balloons from 195.9 inches to an LS-challenging 202.3. Width is up 2.1 inches, as well, while critically the ES's height rises by several inches, depending on which 2025 and 2026 ES models you're comparing. This is key because, while today's ES is a rather large vehicle with a spacious back seat, headroom isn't overly generous; and when you add batteries into a car's floor, that floor tends to rise — potentially shrinking vertical cabin space unless the roof is higher. So we're optimistic Lexus was able to keep or improve on the current ES's headroom (the company notes how "the seating position has been set higher to improve ease of entry and exit, while also providing a wide field of vision," all but confirming as much), by making the car taller overall. Similarly, the newest ES's move to a multilink rear suspension from a strut-type setup is also surely for packaging flexibility and lowering the rear suspension's profile. The EV will surely be more powerful While the forms of propulsion have expanded, Lexus has held the line on choice: Like before, you can pick from two powertrains, though now each with or without all-wheel drive. Only instead of a gas V-6 or a hybrid four-cylinder engine, the 2026 ES gives buyers the choice of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid, as well as single- or dual-motor all-electric power. Similar to before, the hybrid is named ES350h (last year's was the ES300h). If you can't spot the ES350h badge on the trunk lid, a good tell that you're looking at the hybrid are the extra grille openings in the otherwise smooth, body-color nose. 2025 Audi A3 sedan first look: A subtle refresh with expressive customizable headlights It once again is based around a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, with dual electric motors helping out (one a motor/generator, the other a larger electric drive motor); only this time, it's available with all-wheel drive. Like other modern Toyota and Lexus hybrids, this is accomplished using a third electric motor mounted separately on the rear axle, delivering on-demand all-wheel drive and a little overall power boost on launches. Lexus says a front-wheel-drive ES350h will deliver 243 hp overall, and specifies the same output for the all-wheel-drive model. (The smaller Toyota Camry that uses the same basic setup, albeit with less power, delivers 225 hp in front-drive form and 232 hp with AWD.) In our testing, we've found that, in Toyota products that utilize similar setups yet share output figures between front- and all-wheel-drive models, the all-wheel-drive models are typically a little quicker. Accordingly, Lexus thinks the same, and estimates that the all-wheel-drive ES350h will be 0.2 second quicker to 60 mph, reaching the speed in 7.2 seconds. The all-electric 2026 Lexus ES wears a totally smoothed-over snoot and will bear the ES350e and ES500e monikers, the former with single-motor front-wheel-drive and the latter with dual-motor all-wheel drive. The power figures provided are mostly the same as those for Toyota's recently updated bZ (formerly bZ4X) electric SUV: 221 hp for the single-motor, front-wheel-drive ES350e and 338 hp for the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive ES500e. Disappointingly, those figures trail the performance delivered by the also-updated-for-2026 Lexus RZ electric SUV, the bZ's luxurious twin, which pushes out 224 hp in front-drive form, 380 hp in dual-motor form and 408 hp in dual-motor F Sport guise. Lexus says the front-drive ES350e is capable of up to 300 miles of range when equipped with the smallest of its wheel choices, a 19-inch fitment. The dual-motor ES500e cuts 50 miles off that peak range, for a just-okay 250 miles. No battery specifics have been offered so far, but we wouldn't be shocked if the electric ES models came powered by the same 74.7-kWh battery used in the new bZ — though it's possible Lexus installs the larger 77-kWh unit from the RZ (though we'd figure if they did, the ES would make similar power...). Regardless, the battery is charged via a NACS (North American Charging System, SAE J3400-style) plug, meaning it's compatible with Tesla Superchargers. Lexus claims the battery can be topped off (from 10 to 80 percent) via a DC fast charger in as little as 30 minutes. The onboard 11-kW AC charger will make the most of the latest Level 2 home chargers, as well. Leaning harder into luxury Not only is the outgoing ES already somewhat attractive, it's supremely refined and comfortable, a worthy payoff for its un-sporty front-wheel-drive-based underpinnings (in a class filled with rear-drive stuff like BMW's 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz's excellent E-Class). This is a car that's become synonymous with oozing quietly down freeways, and Lexus hints that the 2026 ES will pamper even more, despite its more modern, minimalist vibe inside. Besides the longer wheelbase potentially smoothing the ride even further, Lexus says the ES's structure is stiffer, cutting down noise pathways and vibrations. And you don't need us to remind you that all-electric vehicles tend to operate more quietly than internal-combustion machines (or, at least, their powertrains do). Building on the ES's luxury credibility, Lexus will offer a two-rear-seat Executive package in the U.S. with reclining, a passenger-side footrest, seat massagers and heating and ventilation. This setup, which is more common on one-size up, full-size sedans than midsize luxury models, will be offered on the ES350e Luxury trim. The rest of the cabin will be suitably richly appointed, with suede materials, strategically placed ambient lighting, and even "a special coating" that "enhances surface quality." There is screenage, of course: a 12.3-inch all-digital gauge cluster and a 14-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, dual-Bluetooth phone pairing capability, and built-in navigation. Again, it's surprising how pared-back the ES's cabin appears — this is not traditional, old-world luxury. Lexus also is striking new ground here, with "Lexus" embossed in the steering wheel hub in place of the brand's "L" logo; minimalist surfaces; and no obvious cuts of wood anywhere. We're intrigued by what we see so far, if only because it's great to see a sedan is being redesigned with even more expressive styling and bolder powertrain options, and not simply killed off or replaced by an SUV. Desire Godfrey said it was time for a vehicle upgrade. The Lancaster mother had her eye on a Lexus. "I had a baby, so I'm looking for something reliable for me and a baby," Godfrey said. She searched online and found what she thought was the right vehicle at The Reserve Auto Group in The Colony. She described the sales process in May 2024 as a positive experience. Warranty and GAP insurance issues But an unexpected oil change six months later changed everything. Godfrey, 33, said a Lexus dealership informed her the vehicle was not under warranty. She also discovered her GAP insurance policy didn't exist. "They (Reserve Auto Group) never paid the warranty company the money they were supposed to pay to activate this warranty and this GAP insurance," she said. Car loan charges continue Godfrey said the costs were included in her car note. She filed a report with The Colony Police Department — and she's not alone. Police said they received their first complaint on Jan. 31. According to a news release, police have been investigating multiple fraud claims connected to the dealership since 2023. The business shut down in December 2024, but complaints continue to come in. Alleged auto fraud pattern Investigators said customers were allegedly instructed to write separate checks for aftermarket warranties or GAP insurance policies. Those payments were supposed to go to third-party providers, but police said the dealership allegedly cashed the checks and never forwarded the money — leaving customers without coverage. Another victim comes forward A second alleged victim, who spoke to CBS News Texas anonymously, said she and her husband also bought a Lexus from the dealership. She provided a non-activation letter from DOWC Administrative Services LLC, a company that offers GAP insurance and warranties. The letter stated: "Please be advised that Reserve Auto has failed to remit payment to Us as the Administrator and Provider for your Contract. Consequently, the Contract was not activated in our system." Investigation still ongoing Police have not made any arrests or publicly identified anyone associated with the allegations. Officers said they are continuing to vet additional alleged victims. CBS News Texas is not naming the person listed as the dealership's owner, as police have indicated he did nothing wrong. He spoke briefly by phone, saying he wanted to schedule an appointment to discuss the claims further because he believed "we did not have all the facts." When asked for clarification, he said he didn't have time to explain. Legal team responds Two emails followed the call, and attorneys from Herrin Law introduced themselves. "We have no comment at this time. Thank you for your interest in our client's side of the story," attorney Benjamin Palatiere said. He requested that all future inquiries be directed to him. Buyer left without coverage Meanwhile, Godfrey said the vehicle itself has not had any issues. But she continues to pay for a warranty and insurance that don't exist. "So nobody wants to refinance the loan. Nobody wants to give me GAP insurance," she said. "It's just more so like I'm going to take it or leave it. If I wreck the car, then I would have to figure out a way to pay that car off." Godfrey said she hopes to recover the money one day.

2026 Lexus GX Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The Lexus GX is now a thoroughly modern luxury off-roader, sharing much with the recently downsized Toyota Land Cruiser. But while the LC uses a hybrid four-cylinder for motivation, the GX gets a 349-hp twin-turbo V-6 engine backed by a four-wheel-drive system with a low range. Creature comforts abound in all versions of the Lexus, while the Overtrail is set up for the most serious off-roading. One compromise of the off-road-ready Overtrail trims is the loss of the available third-row seat, limiting the passenger count to five. That said, the GX's rearmost row is pretty tight, so you may not miss it all that much. What's New for 2026? There are no major changes expected for the GX this year. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Lexus GX is expected to start around $66,000 and go up to $82,000 depending on the trim and options. Premium $66,000 (est) Premium+ $70,000 (est) Overtrail $73,000 (est) Luxury $78,000 (est) Overtrail+ $81,000 (est) Luxury+ $82,000 (est) The GX550 has two personalities: luxury on-roader and trail-conquering off-roader. For buyers who plan on spending the majority of their time on asphalt, we'd suggest the Luxury trim, as it classes up the GX550's interior with plenty of nice-to-have features, including semi-aniline leather upholstery; 10-way-adjustable front seats with massage, heat, and ventilation; illuminated door sill plates; and second-row window shades. It also comes with the bigger 22-inch wheels that better fill the GX's large wheel wells for a more upscale look. For a bit more, the Overtrail+ trim provides a more rugged appearance and significantly more capability for off-roading, but the compromise is that it eliminates the GX's third row of seats and some of the luxury items listed above. But if you're planning outdoor adventures that include traversing challenging terrain, the Overtrail is well worth consideration. Engine, Transmission, and Performance A twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that makes 349 horsepower is standard in the GX550. A 10-speed automatic is also standard, and all models come with four-wheel drive. Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims are decked out with more off-road goodies than the other models, including 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, an aluminum skid plate, an adaptive suspension system with more wheel articulation, a crawl-control feature, and selectable drive modes for differing terrains. The GX550 feels punchy off the line, but on the highway we noticed a disconcerting amount of hood flutter. The ride is fairly stiff, especially on the available upsized wheels. Steering is crisp, but the GX's handling is about what you'd expect for the tall, boxy SUV, meaning there's plenty of body roll. The Overtrail shines off-road; outward visibility is excellent, which is especially handy when navigating tight trails. We confirmed as much in an off-road-oriented comparison test. The transfer case allows the driver to select the low-range gearset without locking the center differential, which allows for a tighter turning radius, and the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) can disconnect the front or rear anti-roll bars independently of one another to help improve stability, reduce head toss, and increase traction over rough terrain. 0–60-MPH Times At our test track, a GX550 Premium hit 60 mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds. That's a full second quicker than the previous-generation GX managed at our track. It's also quicker than the Land Cruiser's 7.7-second effort. View Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Towing and Payload Capacity The GX550 can tow up to 9096 pounds, which far exceeds the previous-gen GX460's 6500 pounds as well as the Land Cruiser's 6000-pound rating. The GX also tows more than luxury-brand rivals such as the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 GX yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings of 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. On our 75-mph highway route, the GX550 Premium we tested delivered on its 21-mpg estimate. The GX is well in arrears of the four-cylinder hybrid Land Cruiser's EPA numbers: 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. For more information about the GX's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Despite the GX's rugged exterior styling, luxurious environs await you once you climb aboard. Faux- or genuine-leather upholstery is available in a variety of colors, and Overtrail variants offer faux-suede accents in a dark green shade. Premium and Luxury trims have three rows of seats with space for up to seven with the standard second-row bench; a pair of captain's chairs is optional and brings the seating capacity down to six. Third-row space is severely limited, however; the Lexus TX crossover has a big advantage here. Overtrail models skip the third row altogether and seat five, but the middle passenger's foot room is compromised by the plastic base of the center console. A cooled storage bin, a head-up display, and a digital key fob are all available as options. In our testing, the GX550 Overtrail swallowed 18 carry-on-sized boxes behind the second-row seat and 33 with the rear seats folded, but the cargo floor is high off the ground making it awkward to load heavy items. View Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Infotainment and Connectivity All GX models come with a 14.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a separate 12.3-inch digital gauge display that can be reconfigured to show a variety of information to the driver. Nearly all climate controls are in the touchscreen. Most models have six USB-C ports spread throughout the interior, but Overtrail and Overtrail+ models get just four; a wireless smartphone charging pad is optional and positions the phone up and at an angle. A 10-speaker stereo is standard, but audiophiles can upgrade to a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features The GX comes equipped with a suite of driver-assistance features that includes automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning. For more information about the GX's crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include: Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist Standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature Warranty and Maintenance Coverage When it comes to warranty coverage, Lexus outpaces rivals such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
