STEPPING into the diner, a warm glow of burnt oranges, rustic reds and mellow yellows surrounded me, along with 70s-style decor of rattan lampshades with giant globe bulbs.
It really did feel like entering the set of Netflix's hit TV show Stranger Things - yet I was actually in a roadside cafe in the UK.

Brightside in Exeter, Devon, feels like a retro Little Chef, an iconic motorway cafe chain that sadly stopped trading by the end of 2018.
Even the toilets at Brightside felt like a fun throwback with avocado-coloured sinks set against a mustard yellow tile backdrop.
I often skip past roadside cafes and restaurants for fear that the food will be poor and the prices will be high.
But Brightside wasn't like this.
The menu features an extensive range of options through morning, noon and night.
I opted for the 'Hot Honey Fried Chicken Burger' (£14.95) and my parents opted for the 'Chicken Caesar' pizza (£13.95) and the 'Dirty Brisket Burger' (£16.45).
Whilst we may not have had Eggo waffles (made popular by Stranger Things' Eleven), the dishes we did order hit the spot.
My chicken burger with honey offered a great twist on normal flavours.
And for the brisket burger it was even a winner with my dad who is quite picky when it comes to burgers.
The pizza was a good size as well, and really felt value for money.

Along with our food we tried out two of the diner's mocktails - 'Strawberry Smash' and 'Pop Goes Summer'.
Both mocktails cost £6 and were made with Ceder's non-alcoholic spirit.
Pop Goes Summer had an extra layer of fun, with popping candy around the rim of the glass.
As for Strawberry Smash, it was a great mix of strawberry, pineapple and lime.
Moving onto dessert, we shared the 'Berry Ice Cream Sandwich' (£6.95) and a 'Banoffee Sundae' (£5.95).
The berry ice cream sandwich was essentially a giant profiterole with soft serve ice cream, berries and meringue.

Both desserts felt like the ultimate childhood throwbacks.
It might be just me, but I don't see banoffee desserts around much anymore, so this treat really did transport you back in time.
When the bill came I was pleasantly surprised, as all of that came to around £68.
The price was less than I had expected thanks to their Thursday offer that lets you buy a dessert for £1 alongside any adult main meal.

The diner is also dog friendly and has activities available for children

This wasn't the only great offer the diner had - on Tuesdays, you can buy one pizza get one free after 3pm.
And on Wednesdays, kids eat free after 3pm, making it an affordable option for families needing to take a break on the motorway.
Outside the diner there is also a brightly coloured seating area, with large parasols so you can get some fresh air too.
Dogs are welcome too, and there is plenty to keep the kids entertained with Brightside branded merch to peruse and a number of books available to borrow whilst you sit and eat.
Whilst the diner isn't your typical American-style joint, Brightside definitely mixes the best of British 70s/80s culture with retro American diners.
I personally think Eleven would love it... as well as everyone else in Hawkins.
There are three Brightside diners located across Devon and Cornwall, and a fourth location can be found in Rutland, just under an hour from Leicester.
The diner in Exeter was the first location to open, opposite from Exeter Racecourse, back in 2023.
There is also a 'Karen attraction' in the UK that Brits can't get enough of.

EastEnders star Ricky Champ's wife rushed to hospital after complications

EastEnders star Ricky Champ's wife has been hospitalised after suffering complications to a pre-existing health issue. The actor, 45, who played Stuart Highway in the BBC soap between 2018 and 2022, has been married to influencer Sammy Gilbert for nine years. Together they share two children – a daughter named Beatrix and a son named River. Taking to Instagram this weekend, Sammy told her followers that she was unable to see out of her eyes as a result of them being swollen. 'What is the absolute one thing you don't need to happen the day before you fly to Disney when you need to go shopping/pack/clean/do washing,' she questioned. 'Oh that's right, wake up with your lips so swollen you can't speak and eyes swollen shut so you're in A&E at 7am.' 'One of the side effects of my gallstones and liver is severe hives all over my body every single morning that go away by bedtime then I wake up and it starts all over again. 'Something due to the toxins etc (still not considered urgent though, still been told need to wait a year + for an op).' Sammy then shared a number of pictures of her eyes and mouth, which were clearly swollen. Ricky left the show alongside on-screen wife Tanya Franks, who played Rainie Cross, who staged a comeback for his final scenes. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Family of Southport attack victim Bebe King say her ‘light and spark' live on a year after her death

The family of Southport attack victim Bebe King has said her "light, care and spark" live on as it approaches a year since her death. The six-year-old was killed along with Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, when Axel Rudakubana launched his knife attack on the Taylor Swift-themed dance class in the town on 29 July last year. On Monday 28 July, a post on the Instagram account of Bebe's Hive referenced the youngster's 'favourite musical' Wicked with the quote: 'Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.' Bebe's Hive was set up by her family to provide support for grieving children through creativity and connection. The post, which appeared to have been written by Bebe's mother Lauren, referred to her as 'my mini me' and 'her dad's soulmate'. It said: 'It's time for us to take the space we need. To feel, to breathe, to hold each other close. To just be. 'To be able to create something so purposeful, so needed, has given us a strength we didn't know we had. A reason. A focus. 'We love and thank every single person who has helped us carry this. 'I feel her with me every day and that feeling is what keeps us going. 'Her light, her care, her spark – it lives on, and we'll continue it for as long as we can. 'To our incredible family and friends – thank you for keeping us afloat, while trying to keep yourselves above water. Thank you for loving Bebe so deeply and for riding this forever journey with us. 'To our amazing community – I don't think you realise what you've done. To everyone further, we also thank you from the bottom of our hearts. 'Your kindness has saved us. 'To Elsie and Alice, we never had the chance to meet you, but we feel like we know you. Your light shines so brightly through your parents, and we're proud to walk alongside them.' In a reference to the Taylor Swift song Bejeweled, the post went on to say: 'Our girls' energy will continue to shimmer. 'And to every brave child, every adult, every family whose lives were changed forever that day – we see you and we're sending you so much love.' A video of Bebe dancing and playing with a bubble machine accompanied the caption, along with photos of her. Sefton Council has asked people not to lay flowers to mark the anniversary of the attack but instead to consider donating to causes including Bebe's Hive, as well as Elsie's Story and Alice's Wonderdance, which were set up in the victim's memories. A three-minute silence will be held in the town at 3pm on Tuesday 29 July.

The Icelandic giant, who is best known for playing 'The Mountain' in the hit HBO show 'Game of Thrones', had previously broken the record in 2020. Bjornsson's 501kg lift, however, was disputed by many, including Hall, as he performed it in his own gym and not in a competition setting. But there was no disputing his mammoth 505kg lift at the 2025 Eisenhart Black Competition, which has gone viral.
