26K retired Central govt employees eligible to receive extra benefits under UPS

NEW DELHI: As many as 25,756 retired central government employees meet the eligibility criteria to receive additional benefits under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). These are employees who superannuated are deceased or retired on or before March 31, 2025, having completed ten years or more of qualifying service while covered under NPS, the government has informed parliament.
As of July 20, 2025, the government has already received 7,253 claims for UPS benefits, with a swift processing rate seeing 4,978 claims successfully processed for payment. This indicates a growing uptake of the scheme among eligible beneficiaries.
UPS is specifically introduced as an option under NPS for Central Government employees. There are currently no proposals under consideration to extend these benefits to other pension schemes or sectors, Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman told Lok Sabha on Monday.
Responding to representations from employees and various associations, the government previously extended the cut-off date to opt for UPS by three months, until September 30, 2025. This extension provides more time for eligible individuals to make their decision.
The finance minister said that the government has moved to enhance the financial security of UPS beneficiaries. It has extended the benefit of 'Retirement gratuity and Death gratuity' under the provisions of the Central Civil Service (Payment of Gratuity under National Pension System) Rules, 2021, to Central Government employees covered by UPS.
The finance minister also clarified that the government has ensured parity in taxation, extending the same tax benefits to UPS as are available to NPS under the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Rooftop solar plants to be installed in 1 crore households by 2026-27: Union minister Pralhad Joshi

NEW DELHI: Around one crore households across the country will be equipped with rooftop solar plants by 2026-27 under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, said the Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday. The minister, while speaking in the Lok Sabha, said the government is implementing various schemes and programmes to promote and develop renewable energy across India. 'The government launched PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in February 2024 for installing rooftop solar for one crore households by 2026-27 across all states and UTs in the country," he said during the Question Hour. India's installed renewable energy capacity has now crossed 245 GW, including 116 GW of solar and 52 GW of wind power. According to the minister, the country has saved nearly ₹4 lakh crore by reducing fossil fuel imports and cutting pollution. India had achieved a major milestone in its energy transition journey by reaching 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources—five years ahead of the target set under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement.

Tejasvi Surya flags metro fare hike in Lok Sabha, demands Yellow Line be made operational soon

Tejasvi Surya, Bengaluru South MP, on Wednesday raised concerns in the Lok Sabha over the steep hike in Namma Metro fares and criticised Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) for not publishing the fare fixation committee (FFC) report. Speaking during Zero Hour, Mr. Surya said: 'About four months ago, BMRCL hiked metro fares by nearly 130%. Public transport must be affordable for the common man. This hike has significantly reduced ridership.' He demanded that BMRCL make the FFC report public, stressing that transparency is essential in a democracy. 'Despite several requests, the report remains unpublished. I urge the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to direct BMRCL to release it immediately,' he said. Mr. Surya also called for the early operationalisation of the long-delayed Yellow Line, stating that it is key to addressing Bengaluru's traffic woes. 'The city's infrastructure deficit is growing. Metro expansion is the only sustainable solution,' he added. The 19-km Yellow Line connects R.V. Road to Bommasandra, spanning 16 stations and linking major residential and industrial zones, including Electronics City. Initially set for completion in 2021, the project has been delayed by over four years owing to the lack of metro rolling stock.

India blocks over 1,400 URLs for spreading misleading content and digital propaganda

The Indian government blocked more than 1,400 URLs on digital platforms during Operation Sindoor, most of which were linked to Pakistan-based social media accounts allegedly circulating misleading and anti-India narratives. This action was disclosed by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written response in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. According to Vaishnaw, the flagged online content included false information, provocative material aimed at the Indian Armed Forces, and communally sensitive posts. Many of these social media accounts were reportedly operating from outside India and were found to be actively engaged in spreading disinformation during the course of the military operation. The blocking orders were issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which empowers the government to restrict online content in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of the country, national defence, state security, and public order. In addition to blocking URLs, the government also issued an advisory to media outlets urging them to avoid broadcasting live visuals of defence activities and troop movements. This measure was taken to safeguard operational secrecy and national security. A 24x7 control room was set up during the operation to facilitate coordination between different arms of the military and government media units. This centralised hub included representatives from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with officials from the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and other related departments. The unit ensured real-time updates were disseminated across media stakeholders. Moreover, a dedicated fact-checking team under the PIB played a key role in monitoring social media and digital news platforms throughout the operation. The team was tasked with identifying fake images, edited videos, and manipulated narratives that misrepresented the facts surrounding Operation Sindoor. It also countered various instances of propaganda, particularly those targeting Indian security forces. Fact-checked reports and debunked claims were circulated promptly, and links related to false information were shared to counter the spread of misinformation online, the minister informed Parliament.
