The 'must-watch' film of 2025 just received a 19-minute standing ovation
Sentimental Value has made history at Cannes as it received a 19-minute standing ovation – the third longest ovation in the festival's history.
It premiered at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on Wednesday night and wowed the audience with a tale about a successful actor who is dealing with crippling stage fright and complicated relationships with her family.
The comedy-drama is reportedly moving and meditates on sisterhood, fatherhood, and abandonment.
The film is set in Oslo and comes from Danish-born Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, who was praised for his 2021 film The Worst Person in the World.
Starring Renate Reinsve (who also appeared in The Worst Person in the World), Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Elle Fanning and Cory Michael Smith, it has a completely stacked cast who all looked in awe by the reception of the film.
The festival has become known for some outrageously long standing ovations to show the audience's admiration for a film.
In top spot is Guillermo del Toro's 2006 Pan's Labyrinth with 22 minutes, then the 2004 documentary film Fahrenheit 9/11 taking second spot with 20 minutes.
So far at the 2025 festival, The History of Sound starring Josh O'Connor and Paul Mescal received a nine-minute standing ovation, while Pillion got an eight-minute applause.
Scarlett Johannson's directorial debut, Eleanor The Great, received a six-minute ovation, as did Highest 2 Lowest from Spike Lee.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme received a seven and a half minute ovation, and Die, My Love with Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence.
The film has also received a huge Rotten Tomatoes score with a 100% ranking from the 10 critics who have already released their reviews of the film. More Trending
For Indie Wire, David Ehrlich said: 'A layered masterpiece that 'The Worst Person in the World' director Joachim Trier has been working toward for his entire career.'
Richard Lawson said for Vanity Fair: 'Trier has once again crafted a film that is graceful and limber, thoughtful and surprising. Sentimental Value doesn't land with the same wallop as 'Worst Person', but it is plenty affecting in its own insightful, poignant way.'
For Variety, Peter Debruge said: 'I tend to think of 'therapy through filmmaking' as a bad thing, by which I mean that artists with unresolved personal issues would do better to sort those matters out in private. Joachim Trier's 'Sentimental Value' offers an inspiring exception.'

Taking to Instagram, Lochan shared a video with him appearing alongside Brianna Balram, who starred in the Netflix reality series, Too Hot to Handle. It showed the pair had cooked together during Brianna's recent trip to London. One follower commented: "So nice to see him happy I see chemistry here." Another added: "This is a soft launch if ever I saw one. "That hand on the small of the back no lie." Elsewhere, Whitney herself addressed the video via a Snapchat post. She shared a screenshotted comment from a follower which read: "Sorry to disturb you sis, have you seen your replacement." Whitney captioned the post: "Using another sister for clickbait, president." Fans had previously speculated a potential romance between Lochan and Brianna. Love Island's Whitney says she was 'bamboozled' by Lochan split and reveals reason for shock split Ahead of their video, Lochan and Brianna posed closely together in a post on Instagram The pair smiled happily to the camera while standing in a kitchen, and as she held up a plate of food in the two photos. "2 worlds 🇬🇧🇺🇸 [Great Britain and United States] + 2 foodies and 1 recipe. Can you guess what me and your fav chef @lochan_nowacki cooked up while I was in London?' Brianna captioned the post. Fans rushed to the comments to speculate whether the pair were a couple or not. Love Island - Whitney and Lochan Love Story THE duo found love on-screen in 2023 - yet what's the lowdown? Beauty mogul Whitney entered the villa on Day 3, and experienced highs and lows on the hit ITV2 reality show, stealing contestant Andre Furtado, 22, the same day she entered into the villa. She coupled up with Mehdi Edno, 26, on Day 5, and in a surprising turn of events, she took personal trainer Zachariah Noble, 26, out on a date but their chemistry would soon fizzle out. Her luck changed in Week 5, when Windsor-born Lochan entered Cara Amor on Day 26. On Day 31, Whitney chose to couple up with Lochan. The show favourites lost out on the winning spot to Jess Harding, 23, and Sammy Root, 23 on the show finale on Day 58. She recently told how the pair were planning to move in together. Yet in July 2024, eyebrows were raised after the pair unfollowed each other on social media then attended an event together - leaving some fans calling out a "publicity stunt." "If they are dating he'll be the luckiest guy coz bree is one of the most beautiful girls ever," wrote one person. "They look good together," penned another. But another person was not convinced, writing: "Where in the caption does it suggest they are dating? "It just looks to me they partnered up to make a dish... or am I missing something?"

Bafta-nominated actor Micheal Ward charged with rape and sexual assault
The 27-year-old, who has starred in Blue Story and Top Boy, said 'I deny the charges against me entirely' and said he had co-operated with police fully throughout their investigation. Ward is accused of offences against one woman in January 2023, the Metropolitan Police said. The force said he is charged with two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. Ward, of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, will appear at Thames Magistrates' Court on August 28, the Crown Prosecution Service said. In a statement issued after the charges were announced, Ward said: 'I deny the charges against me entirely. 'I have co-operated fully with the police throughout their investigation and will continue to co-operate. 'I recognise that proceedings are now ongoing, and I have full faith that they will lead to my name being cleared. 'Given those proceedings, I am unable to comment further.' Following the charges, Detective Superintendent Scott Ware said: 'Our specialist officers continue to support the woman who has come forward – we know investigations of this nature can have significant impact on those who make reports.' The Jamaican-born actor was awarded the Bafta Rising Star honour in 2020 and was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Bafta for his role in BBC's Small Axe in 2021 and the 2022 film Empire Of Light.
