‘Udaipur Files' to release as planned, Delhi High Court rejects plea by murder accused
The petitioner had sought an interim stay on the film's release, raising concerns about its potential impact on the ongoing legal proceedings.
However, a bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said that the petitioner failed to establish a prima facie case in his favour and dismissing a plea, reported PTI.
"Producer has already spent life earnings in the film and if the movie is not released the balance of convenience will be disturbed. Once a film has been certified by the Board and trial is not likely to be effected by exhibition, we find ourselves unable to agree to prayer for staying release of movie," the bench said.
The film is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Rajasthan's Udaipur, who was brutally killed by two men in broad daylight.
The counsel for the petitioner Mohd Javed said if the film was allowed to be released, it would "prejudice the trial".
"Right to fair trial is supreme. Witnesses are to be examined. Film is only going to prejudice the trial. Dialogues are lifted from chargesheet. Title itself says Kanhaiya Lal murder. It will affect the trial," senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, appearing for the accused, argued.
The petition was opposed by the counsel representing the government, who said authorities had applied their mind while clearing the movie for release.
'Tickets already booked'
The counsel representing the movie produced, meanwhile, said the tickets had already been booked by viewers.
"Movie is to be released tomorrow. Producer has invested his lifetime saving in making this movie, which is his right as freedom of speech. Accused's name, his specific role not mentioned anywhere in film," senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia, appearing for the film producer, said.

She left for Katni on August 7 by the Narmada Express train, but did not reach her destination. Tiwari's family members later lodged a missing person complaint at the Rani Kamalapati GRP police station in Bhopal. Police searched for clues in areas ranging from Rani Kamalapati station to Itarsi and Katni, and scanned CCTV cameras of stations and surrounding areas. Lodha said Tiwari's last location was Itarsi station.

Pregnant Minor Rape Survivor Agrees To Give Birth After Moving Delhi High Court
New Delhi: A minor rape survivor who moved the Delhi High Court with a plea to terminate her 30-week pregnancy has agreed to give birth to the child, who would be given for adoption. The 14-year-old girl, who was abandoned by her parents, moved the court through her aunt. She was raped and impregnated by a cousin and is currently residing at a shelter home in the capital. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma's August 18 order observed the survivor was abandoned by both parents and the mother of the rape accused, her aunt, was the only guardian with whom she wanted to reside. "With these peculiar background circumstances, this court by way of abundant caution, deems it appropriate to hold that the child will need care and protection under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and CWC is directed to independently interact with the child, obtain her opinion and inform this court regarding the same before passing of a final order," the court said. The survivor and her guardian agreed on giving birth after being counselled about the opinion of the medical board, which examined her and said the termination of her pregnancy was not possible, given the medical complications. The board opined that any pre-term C-section for delivery or medical termination of pregnancy would pose higher future obstetrical implications, and if undertaken, could adversely affect her future reproductive prospects. The board's report indicated that at the present gestation period, the child would be born alive, and the doctors have informed the girl and her guardian about the implications of terminating the pregnancy. The board informed the court that the minor and her guardian were willing to continue with the pregnancy for the next four to six weeks. The court noted the minor's pregnancy would continue given the statements, and it couldn't direct the termination against their will. "Considering the above, the prayer to direct the respondents 1 and 2 (Delhi government) to medically terminate the pregnancy of the victim given the Explanation 2, Section 3(2) of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, will be infructuous," it said. The court then posted the matter for August 20, when the Child Welfare Committee would submit its report. The girl learnt about her pregnancy in early August when she saw a doctor. She was already 27 weeks pregnant by then. She subsequently moved the court after the doctors referred to statutory restrictions under the MTP Act, limiting such procedures to 20 weeks in ordinary cases and 24 weeks in certain categories such as rape survivors.

Amendments to Uttarakhand anti-conversion law tabled in assembly
Agency: Gairsain, Aug 19 (PTI) The amendments to the anti-conversion law to make it harsher, with stringent provisions like punishment up to life imprisonment and heavy fines, was introduced in the state assembly on Tuesday. The Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill-2025 provides for a maximum punishment of life imprisonment and a heavy fine of up to Rs 10 lakh for forced conversion. At present, there is a provision of maximum 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000. More stringent provisions were being added to the existing law to stop conversion done through fraud, inducement or pressure, according to the government. The definition of inducement has been expanded in the bill to include gifts, cash/goods benefits, employment, free education, promise of marriage, hurting religious faith or glorifying another religion, categorising all of them as crime. It makes punishable the acts like promoting or inciting conversion through social media, messaging app or any online medium. under the bill, there is a provision in the bill for three to 10 years imprisonment for general violation, five to 14 years in cases related to sensitive class and 20 years to life imprisonment in serious cases and heavy fines. This is the second amendment to the anti-conversion law that has been in force since 2018. The first amendment to the Act was made in 2022.
