Bomb squad vs Rangers detonators – eight signs you couldn't miss watching Russell Martin's uneven side up close

Daily Record27-07-2025
There's an uneven nature to this bloated Ibrox squad and that was evident in the 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough
There's been a clamour to see more of Russell Martin 's Rangers revolution up close with multiple warm-ups taking place behind closed doors this summer.

But a sizable section of the natives were left peeking through the cracks of their fingers as a selection of fringe men teetered on the brink while implementing the boss' highwire act in the 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough at Ibrox .

Seriously, the former Scotland international's style of play isn't for the faint of heart and Boro boss Rob Edwards was primed and ready to expose the dangers of Martin's methods when carried out by men who may not make the grade with Rangers.

The term 'bomb squad' became a buzzword for fringe players without a future during the Steven Gerrard era and there's a few in the current set-up who can't get a near squad which nearly stretched into two rows in the club's official player list inside the matchday programme.
Robin Propper exited that particular sub-unit with the likes of Ross McCausland, Jose Cifuentes, Ben Davies and Ridvan Yilmaz all likely to be seconded elsewhere before the window closes.
But even on the pitch on Saturday there was a seismic difference between peripheral figures who appear candidates to depart compared to the first-team finishers, or detonators in this case, who blew up Boro's dominance to earn a draw and underline the uneven nature of the current Rangers squad.
Record Sport was on hand and here's what you couldn't fail to spot during an uneven 90 minutes ahead of Wednesday's gargantuan Champions League second leg qualifier against Panathinaikos.
Oscar worthy
Oscar Cortes has endured a torrid 18 months at Rangers and a story not dissimilar to that of pal Danilo. And it appears the Colombian has a shot at his own redemption arc after gamely rising to the challenge as an auxiliary right-back with licence to bomb up the pitch.

Martin singled him out for praise for a display which wasn't perfect but had his manager clapping with approval despite not everything coming off for the 21-year-old. The £4m man has ways to go but his Ibrox career won't be ended due to a lack of fight.
Jefte price
The same couldn't be said for Jefte on the other side. The 21-year-old struggled with multiple facets of the game against Middlesbrough and there was a marked difference when Max Aarons replaced him. Jefte is yet to excel in the inverted work which is a necessity under Martin.

And a quip from Neil McCann on punditry before the first leg against Panathinaikos rang loud while watching him flounder against Boro. The recent Rangers coach claimed the Brazilian is an insecure boy in need of cajoling and reassurances. But they don't appear forthcoming unless he can rise to the challenge.
You're my main Eman
Emmanuel Fernandez came with a warning upon the completion of his £3.5m move from Peterborough that the 23-year-old was a work in progress. That was evident as he and rookie Zander Hutton struggled mightily in containing Tommy Conway. However, he was a different player in the second half as he forged a strong pairing with the impressive Nasser Djiga.

Bailey's on ice
In a week when the scarcity of young Scottish talent has been high on the agenda, with Dundee United not naming a Scot in their starting Euro starting XI, it would be remiss to turn on an 18-year-old rising star after a friendly display to forget. But Bailey Rice isn't your average talented teen and, in truth, the expectations on Rice exceed where his game is at present. He struggled as the anchor of the midfield
A nod to Nico

Martin remarked the Belgian's blazing 30-minute cameo was the best he's been in Light Blue since the former Southampton boss landed the job. And Raskin's role is now truly defined in this new Ibrox era.
The 23-year-old is being tasked with becoming a bonafide attacking midfielder working on the left side of the midfield. Raskin and fellow subs Aarons and Findlay Curtis built upon their booming crescendo against the Greeks midweek and their impact on that side of the pitch instantly had Boro boss Edwards scrambling to thwart the newly-discovered threat.

Russ' wee fib
The boss claimed he was usually a zen-like figure during pre-season but that hasn't been the case during both Ibrox showcases with fans in attendance against Brugge and Boro, Martin even remarked his pent-up anger over the penalty that wasn't towards John Beaton and his officials was borne out of frustration over what he reckons were too many starters in the first half failing to meet his high standards.
Dan truly is the man
Cyriel Dessers exiting at half-time after a bitty pre-season appeared cautionary rather than a nod to an impending start in Athens on Wednesday, And, in truth, Danilo reminded everyone inside Ibrox why he has been thriving during pre-season. The 26-year-old links the play and his header to spark the comeback was anything but easy.
Lyall lives up to hype
His stadium man of the match award was warmly received and the former Dundee man appears a good bet to make the grade. Cameron demanded the ball, found space to receive it on the half turn and was willing to drive his side up the pitch. The early signs are promising for the 22-year-old.

Alexander Isak told to report for Newcastle training after squad have gone

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak was told to report for training on Wednesday after the rest of the squad had left as uncertainty over his future continues. The 25-year-old Sweden international did not travel with his team-mates on their pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea, ostensibly because of a minor thigh injury, after Liverpool, who subsequently tabled a £110million bid for him, let it be known they remained interested in acquiring his services. Isak, who later informed the club he wanted to explore his options this summer, instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad and returned to Tyneside at the weekend, shortly before head coach Eddie Howe and his squad landed back from Seoul and were given two days off. The players were back at the training ground on Wednesday morning and their families were invited to join them after training. However, the PA news agency understands Isak, who reported back to the club's Benton base on Monday, was told not to come in until after they had left and was pictured arriving at around 1550. The £63million frontman has been a huge hit since his arrival from Sociedad during the summer of 2022 and played a key role last season as they ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons. However questioned about his absence in South Korea, Howe signalled that his actions might have repercussions. The 47-year-old told reporters: 'You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United. 'The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad – you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. 'We will make sure that any player earns the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.' Isak is understood to have undergone treatment and light training at a deserted training ground on Monday and it remains to be seen whether he will have any involvement in the club's pre-season fixtures against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid this weekend. The striker faces clear-the-air talks with Howe, with his situation becoming seemingly more complicated by the day as a difficult transfer window threatens to spiral further out of control. Newcastle tabled an improved club record bid for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko on Monday in an effort to beat Manchester United to the punch, but developments since suggest the 22-year-old is more likely to head for Old Trafford than St James' Park. That would represent the latest blow in a transfer window which has already seen the Magpies miss out on major targets Dean Huijsen, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, James Trafford and Liam Delap. They have managed to recruit Nottingham Forest wide man Anthony Elanga and, on loan, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but with frontman Callum Wilson and midfielder Sean Longstaff having left, there is significant work to be done, with the start of the new season just 10 days away. Howe was already looking for a striker before the Isak situation came to a head and, with three years remaining on the Swede's current deal – he has so far resisted the club's overtures to sign a new contract – there seems to be little prospect of the club allowing him to leave either before they have secured a replacement or for much less than their £150m valuation, having already rebuffed Liverpool's initial approach. Meanwhile, sources on Tyneside have played down suggestions that Newcastle have tabled a bid for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw, but it is understood they are maintaining an interest in the Germany international.

‘Sell him at half time' – Arsenal fans furious at struggling star and demand Mikel Arteta makes urgent signing

An exclusive SunSport report revealed Arsenal are likely to be left disappointed in their hunt for one star FUMING FANS 'Sell him at half time' – Arsenal fans furious at struggling star and demand Mikel Arteta makes urgent signing ARSENAL fans demanded that Gabriel Martinelli be sold at HALF-TIME of their clash against Villarreal. Martinelli, 24, was named in the starting XI for Mikel Arteta's Gunners as they took on their Spanish rivals in a friendly at the Emirates. 6 Gabriel Martinelli started Arsenal's pre-season friendly against Villarreal Credit: Getty 6 However, fans slammed him for his 'unacceptable' first half display Credit: Reuters 6 Martinelli lost the ball a number of times Play Dream Team now! The Brazilian was named at left wing to partner Bukayo Saka and new signing Viktor Gyokeres in attack. However, he did not enjoy the most fruitful half of football in his career, much to the dismay of the Emirates faithful and watching Gooners around the world. This was highlighted by him losing a number of duels in the first half. And Arsenal fans, who had been left frustrated by the lack of attacking additions prior to Gyokeres' arrival - with only the divisive move of Noni Madueke coming in, demanded action was taken to land a new left winger ASAP. A second said: "It's 15 minutes. Martinelli already lost balls 4 times while in attack. How much do we need to pay him if we just terminate his contract? This is unacceptable." Another said: "Gyokeres saw half an hour of Martinelli on the left and decided he would do it instead." A fourth added: "Gyokeres goes to the left wing and immediately makes more of an impact than Martinelli. My goodness we need a LW." 6 Martinelli was deployed on the left wing but struggled to make an impact BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK A fifth said: "Saudi if you can hear me please take Gabriel Martinelli." While a sixth said: "I cannot do Martinelli for another season, I physically cannot." Guehi & Eze to STAY at Palace? Transfer Blow for Liverpool & Arsenal! The Martinelli comments came with the Gunners losing to their Spanish rivals following goals from former Arsenal flop Nicolas Pepe - who bizarrely refused to celebrate - and Karl Etta Eyong. Despite the criticism levelled at him, Martinelli was actually the man to provide a spark to Arsenal's attack when he lifted a corner to the far post for Christian Norgaard to head home in the 36th minute. After an uneventful second half for the winger, Martinelli was eventually replaced by Madueke in the 76th minute. Arsenal open their season with a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, who appear to be on the brink of landing former Gunners transfer target Benjamin Sesko. But Arsenal will first play out the Emirates Cup at home to Athletic Bilbao. In the market they remain linked with Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, although as SunSport exclusively reported earlier this week, he and team-mate Marc Guehi look likely to stay with the Eagles. 6 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW
