Saucy slits to latex Irish stars dare to bare at Style Awards

Extra.ie23-05-2025
Temperatures are rising on the VIP Style Awards carpet as Ireland's hottest stars strip down for the biggest night in fashion.
From saucy slits to luscious latex, everyone who's anyone is daring to bare for this year's festivities, which seeks to celebrate the best of the best of Irish style.
Leading the pack is Style Awards host Laura Fox, who opted for a fiery red number for presenting duties. Laura Fox pictured at the Platinum VIP Style Awards 2025 at the InterContinental Dublin. Pic: Brian McEvoy
The 2FM host stunned in a fire engine red corset from Amory Co, which perfectly moulds to her torso, leaving little to the imagination.
The dress also features a long satin skirt with a daring thigh high split that shows off her bronzed pins.
Pamela Uba also went for a similar style, rocking a Dune inspired look by Nero Notte designs. Pamela Uba pictured at the Platinum VIP Style Awards 2025 at the InterContinental Dublin. Picture: Brian McEvoy
The dress also featured a moulded corset, with the former Miss Ireland pairing it with a hooded bolero and fitted white maxi skirt.
Erica Cody wasn't afraid to bare it all on Friday night, with her black lacy number turning heads on the red carpet.
The Rally Girl's dress features dramatic cut-outs and a sculptural, lace-like design that reveals much of her body. Along with the asymmetrical silhouette and open front skirt, Erica is certainly leading the stakes when it comes to sex appeal. Ciara Doherty had us doing a double take with her elegant black dress that features a sleek, figure-hugging silhouette with a striking plunging neckline.
The neckline is uniquely sculpted with bold, curved edges, totally elevating a relatively simple garment.
Yasmin Seky truly brought the drama to this year's carpet, stepping out in a show-stopping number featuring a deep plunging neckline and dramatic cap sleeves. Ciara Doherty pictured at the Platinum VIP Style Awards 2025 at the InterContinental Dublin. Pic: Brian McEvoy
A high front slit and waist cut outs add to the boldness of the design, while the voluminous, floor-sweeping train adds elegance.
Speaking of plunging necklines, Jennifer Zamparelli dazzled in pink for the festivities, with her strapless gown featuring a dramatic v-neck line.
The bubblegum dream dress was on loan from rented threads, with the Dancing With The Stars host keeping it simple in way of styling, opting for just strappy silver heels and a diamond choker. Jen's dress also featured a thigh high slit which perfectly showed off her glowing tan.
I think it's safe to say that saucy silhouettes were a firm favourite for this year's carpet.

Alexander's Feast at Kilkenny Arts Festival review: Perfect tale for Handel becomes perfect choice for Irish Baroque Orchestra

Alexander's Feast Irish Baroque Orchestra/Whelan St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny ★★★★☆ This Kilkenny Arts Festival performance of Alexander's Feast takes place close to three centuries since its Irish premiere, in February 1742. That occasion was only a few weeks ahead of the world premiere of Messiah, in the same Dublin music hall on Fishamble Street, in April that year. Both pieces were signals of career change for Handel. He composed Alexander's Feast in 1736, just as he was coming to accept that his gravy train of Italian operas for the London market would soon leave the station for the last time. His future success now lay with English-language texts, mostly biblical, and in composing oratorios rather than operas. Alexander's Feast is actually neither. It's Handel's setting of a John Dryden poem for the feast of St Cecilia, patron of music. And music is its theme. For although the backdrop is ancient Persepolis, where Alexander the Great is celebrating his conquest of Persia, Dryden's real story is about how Alexander's bard Timotheus uses music to manipulate the king's emotions this way and that. Perfect for Handel – who retained Dryden's subtitle, The Power of Music – and perfect for the Irish Baroque Orchestra and its director, Peter Whelan, a conductor of manifest artistic appetite and energy. As we've come to expect with Whelan, these qualities are immediately to the fore with his unleashing of the work's overture, itself full of energy and promise. His players run with every expression he communicates, so important in music with such sharp emotional contrasts from one movement to the next, all of it edged with the characteristic colours and zest of original instruments. READ MORE The choruses – often the reflections of bystanders, as it were, on the different emotional states into which Timotheus leads Alexander – are sung not by a choir but by four singers, one to a part. Only once or twice does it feel as if the absence of a full choir means something is missing – unless that's just my having attended 4,000 Messiahs. Otherwise the four singers are excellent, communicating not only clear words and the relevant states of mind but also wide dynamic range and easy navigation of Handel's intricate counterpoint. In short, they are as effective as they are impressive, so it's quite unfortunate that their names – Elspeth Piggott, Sarah Thursfield, Christopher Bowen and William Gaunt – do not appear in the printed programme. (It is also either oversight or poor judgment, with a work of this kind, not to provide the audience with copies of the text.) [ 'It's really a coup': Irish Baroque Orchestra to make BBC Proms debut with Handel 'Dublin' oratorio not performed since 18th century Opens in new window ] The three soloists are well matched in colour and tone quality, as though cut from the same cloth, but with each one's individual touch on show in how they present each new mood. The soprano Aisling Kenny, for example, brightly inhabits pride and excitement as Timotheus persuades Alexander that he belongs on Olympus among the gods, while the tenor Stuart Jackson is equally at home celebrating Bacchus and drink or urging vengeance and war. The countertenor Hugh Cutting beautifully validates Handel's entrusting his part with the work's tenderest and most searching moments. Why police were called to first Dunnes Stores opening BETWEEN the weekly food shops and bargain fashion - Dunnes Stores is a staple retailer in Irish households. But this wasn't always the case, and when the initial branch of the shop opened its doors in 1944 it caused quite the stir On March 31 of the year, Ben Dunne opened the first ever Dunnes Stores on St Patrick's Street in Co Cork. Locals quickly learned of the grand opening and flooded into the store in what the retailer's archives recall as a 'shopping frenzy.' The bargain clothing on sale inside the new store at 'pre-war prices' was one of the factors cited for the buzz. During the chaos a window was forced in and Gardai were called to the scene. Cops worked to deal with the eager crowds and keep shoppers calm and safe before they made it into the store for their first Dunnes experience. Fast forward some 80 years, the business now employs over 18,000 people and although an opening of a Dunnes branch hasn't caused quite as much stir since the very first one, it has cemented its place as one of the nation's leading retailers. Dunnes Stores now has 138 stores across Europe: 118 in the Republic of Ireland, 15 in Northern Ireland Five stores in Spain. Now, the only sizes left in stock are XXS and large, though you may find your size in your local store. The top features a plunging v-neckline and short sleeves, making it perfect for the warmer weather. The top features a leopard print across it, with black lace at the hem and the bottom of the sleeves. Around the neckline is a black lining, and in the centre there is a small bow for another bit of chic detailing. And the leopard print is set to be very popular this autumn, making the top the perfect piece to have in your wardrobe. Dunnes Stores chiefs described the top as having a "vintage-inspired" finish.
