Gary Oldman, Hollywood's go-to bad guy, on facing typecast in film industry
While discussing his performance as Dr Zachary Smith in Lost in Space during a recent interview with Variety, the actor said that there was a point in his career when he was the primary choice of the makers for villain roles in movies.
"I got sort of typecast for a while. I became kind of like the poster boy for the 'rent-a-villain.' Sort of, 'Oh, we need a villain and we'll get Gary.' I don't know how that happened, but it happened," Oldman was quoted as saying.
"And it was fun for a while, but eventually, I just put a stop to it. It got a little old. But they are fun to play."
Oldman likened the character of Dr Zachary Smith to another one of his iconic villain roles, Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg from The Fifth Element, which was directed by Luc Besson and was released in 1997.
"[ Lost in Space ] was fun, great cast. I thought the story, it was a lot to put in. It was a lot of movie in two hours. But [Dr. Zachary Smith] was fun to play because it's a villain with a tongue in the cheek or a little twinkle in the eye," Oldman said.
One of Oldman's first major switches from villain to hero was when he joined Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy as Commissioner Gordon.
David S Goyer, who wrote Batman Begins and The Dark Knight for Nolan, recently recalled on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he was "very surprised" to hear Oldman had landed the role, given his villain status.
"Now that I'm a more experienced filmmaker, I realised that it's really exciting to cast against type," Goyer was quoted as saying by Variety. "It's exciting for filmmakers, and it's also exciting for the actors."
Oldman will be seen in the fifth season of the Slow Horses series. The actor has been playing the lead role in this web series since season one. The fifth season is set to premiere this year.

Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie is reportedly planning to sell her house in the US and relocate abroad with her children. According to People magazine, the actor is preparing to put her Los Angeles home on the market ahead of the move. "Jolie never wanted to live in LA full-time. She didn't have a choice because of the custody arrangement with her ex-husband Brad Pitt," the source was quoted as saying by the outlet. The report added that Jolie may relocate as soon as her youngest children, twins Knox and Vivienne, turn 18 next year. "She's eyeing several locations abroad. She'll be very happy when she's able to leave Los Angeles," the source added. In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie briefly touched upon her personal life, involving her children and divorce from Pitt. Jolie and Brad Pitt finalised their divorce in December last year, citing "irreconcilable differences". "More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. Not 'Pulp Fiction' or 'Reservoir Dogs', this is Quentin Tarantino's favourite flick
Hollywood actor-filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has named a favourite from his own films, and it's not the Oscar-winning Pulp Fiction (1994). In a recent interview, Tarantino opened up about his films and named Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as his favourite, while calling Inglorious Basterds a "masterpiece". Tagging Kill Bill as the "ultimate Quentin" film, he said, "Nobody else could've made it. Every aspect about it is so particularly ripped, like with tentacles and bloody tissue, from my imagination and my id and my loves and my passion and my obsession. So I think Kill Bill is the movie I was born to make," as quoted by Variety. The filmmaker then went on to pick Pulp Fiction as his favourite and best screenplay. "But, there's an aspect of Hateful Eight that I actually think is probably my best directing of my material, i.e., the material is written and it's solid. So it's not like I have to create it, like 'Kill Bill,' it's solid, it's right there, and I actually think it's my best servicing of my material as a director," he explained. Elsewhere in the conversation, Tarantino also spoke about passing the directing duties of the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood sequel to David Fincher. "I love this script, but I'm still walking down the same ground I've already walked. It just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, I've got to not know what I'm doing again. I've got to be in uncharted territory," he said. Tarantino will still be a part of the project as writer and producer, he confirmed, further stating that he will be around to meet the makers' needs for anything.
