Mukah Politeknik sweeps top honours in DoE Sarawak short video contest
KUCHING (Aug 20): Mukah Politeknik (PMU) emerged as the top winner in the short video competition organised by the Department of Environment (DoE) Sarawak, held in conjunction with the Community Programme on Open Burning Awareness and Peatland Fire Monitoring at Dewan UiTM Mukah yesterday.
PMU's DEP Production team, comprising Muhammad Nur Faizzuddin Hakimi Ibrahim Abdullah and Muhammad Haziq Hazim Abdullah from the Department of Electrical Engineering, clinched the first place.
Second and third places also went to students from PMU's Department of Electrical Engineering, with Carlteddy Kassa Jeremy taking second under the team name Seventh, and Elvina Helen Jeffery and Arvinicia Eunellyn Aking placing third as Sahabat Alam.
Two consolation prizes were awarded to PMU Incinerator Filter, represented by Victor Adam Clement, Mohammad Fitri Zahid Ismail, and Shahmiezan Sukri from the Department of Civil Engineering, and BTC Squad PMU, represented by Welther Lian Raymond, Thaddeus Alister Leo, and Kennethdy Uju Standly, also from the Department of Civil Engineering.
The programme was officiated by Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine, and attended by representatives from the Mukah Resident's Office, UiTM Mukah, Sarawak Energy Berhad, as well as some 250 PMU students and accompanying lecturers.
Running from 7.30am to 1pm, the event featured exhibitions and live demonstrations, including fire safety by the Fire and Rescue Department, the use of monitoring equipment by DoE, and talks on peatland fire prevention infrastructure, fire control, the prohibition of open burning by the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), and the health impacts of haze.
According to PMU, the programme is in line with the institution's commitment to sustainability, reflecting the goals of SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

DOE, Labuan Corporation and Marine Dept investigate oil spill at Marina Jetty

LABUAN: An investigation has been launched into the oil spill incident at the Labuan Public Marine Jetty to identify the parties responsible. The Department of Environment (DOE), in a statement to Bernama today, said the investigation would involve Labuan Corporation and the Marine Department. The incident was first reported to the DOE office in Labuan on Aug 14, and enforcement officers were immediately dispatched to the site for inspection at 2.30 pm the same day. The DOE enforcement officers discovered oil waste patches estimated between 500 to 1,000 litres accumulated along the jetty and sticking to boats. 'Samples of the oil waste were collected and have been sent to the Chemistry Department for of no compound issued to any parties,' it said. It added that an immediate action notice was issued to the jetty operator, and clean-up operations were carried out by the Petroleum Industry of Malaysia Mutual Aid Group (PIMMAG). The DOE confirmed that it is working closely with the Marine Department, Labuan Corporation, and Labuan Port Authority in managing the case. The department reminded the public that discharging oil into Malaysian waters without a licence is an offence under the Environmental Quality Act 1974, and stern legal action will be taken against those found responsible. The department also reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring and strict enforcement to safeguard Labuan's marine environment. Shop, drop… and croc? Hatchling found lurking in Kuching drain near mall
KUCHING, Aug 9 — A crocodile hatchling was captured in a drain near a shopping mall here this morning. The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the sighting was reported at around 10.04am, prompting a team from the Kota Sentosa station to be dispatched to the scene. 'Upon arrival, the team confirmed the presence of a crocodile hatchling in a drain in front of the complainant's residence. 'Using a snare, the team successfully captured the young reptile,' Bomba said in a statement. The hatchling was subsequently transported back to the station before being handed over to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) for further handling and relocation.
