Congress Leader Says Rahul Gandhi Could Be "2nd Ambedkar", BJP Mocks Party
Mocking the Congress for its leader's remark that party MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi could prove to be the "second Ambedkar" for OBCs, the BJP has termed it an insult of Dalits as well as the social reformer, who is also called the Father of the Constitution.
In a post on X on Saturday, Congress leader Udit Raj wrote, "OBCs (Other Backward Classes) will have to think that history does not give opportunities for progress again and again. They should follow and support what Rahul Gandhi said at the Talkatora Stadium conference. If they do so, then Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them."
On Friday, Mr Gandhi had said that not conducting a caste census when the Congress-led UPA was in power had been a mistake and that he was determined to correct it.
"I think about my work, where I did well and where I fell short, and I see two to three things. Land Acquisition Bill, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Right to Food, Tribal Bill, and Niyamgiri struggle -- all these things I did well. As far as the issues of tribals, Dalits, and women are concerned, I should get good marks there. I did good work," he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
"But one shortcoming remained in the Congress party and my work: I didn't protect the OBC community the way I should have. The reason is that I did not deeply understand the OBC issues at that time. Ten to 15 years ago, I understood the difficulties faced by Dalits. Their issues are visible, they are easily understood, but the problems of OBCs remain hidden. If I had known about your issues and problems at that time, I would have conducted a caste-based census right then. That was my mistake, which I am going to correct," the MP from Raebareli admitted.
Reacting to Udit Raj's statement, BJP Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the Congress was talking about a second BR Ambedkar when it never respected the "original" one.
"Insulting Dalits and BR Ambedkar has become the Congress' identity... Who insulted the "original" Ambedkar? Who did not bestow the Bharat Ratna on him? Who did not let his Constitution be implemented in Jammu and Kashmir? Who spoke about Muslim reservation? Who said reservation is bad... Jawaharlal Nehru," Mr Poonawalla said.
"Now they want to become a second Ambedkar, not Nehru or Indira Gandhi? This means the Gandhi family is admitting Nehru and Indira Gandhi were on the wrong path... The Congress believes only in worshipping one family," he added.

The Congress party on Monday reacted to the Supreme Court's refusal to stay the publication of draft electoral rolls in Bihar, asserting that while the top court may have declined to halt the process, citizens still have the right to ensure that elections remain free from vote theft and fraud. Speaking to IANS, Bihar Congress President Rajesh Kumar said, "It would not be appropriate for us to comment directly on the decision of the Supreme Court. But the way the Election Commission is working is quite disappointing. The number of voters whose names have been deleted has crossed 65 lakhs, yet the Election Commission has not changed its approach. They claim to be removing fake voters added through fraudulent means, but the current process itself appears dubious." Congress spokesperson Abhay Dubey echoed these concerns, stating, "The Supreme Court had directed that Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards, and ration cards should be considered for voter verification. But the Election Commission has not complied with this. It's vote theft. The EC has deleted the names of 65 lakh voters without proper verification. They did not conduct any door-to-door campaign to collect data. It's a bogus process." Congress Bihar in-charge Krishna Allavaru said, "The Supreme Court refused to stay draft electoral rolls publication, but people have the right to ensure there is no vote theft and no election fraud. The INDIA Bloc's struggle will continue. The SIR is a scam – a voter theft scam – and the Election Commission is directly responsible for it." Meanwhile, the BJP defended the Election Commission's actions. Bihar BJP President Dilip Jaiswal said, 'The Supreme Court has already stated that there should be no violation of anyone's voting rights. Not a single voter has publicly protested so far. The Election Commission is only removing voters who are either deceased or registered in multiple locations. They are also removing voters who no longer exist. Protesting against the SIR process, which is still underway, is not good.' DMK MP Tiruchi N. Siva, however, warned that what is happening in Bihar could soon spread elsewhere. 'It is being reported that nearly one crore voters may have been deprived of their rights. In the name of SIR, the Election Commission is carrying out actions, and the government is merely watching. Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of democracy. We want a debate on this. The government is accountable and should clarify these issues instead of avoiding them,' he told IANS. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday declined to grant an interim stay on the publication of the draft electoral rolls in Bihar, prepared following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) ordered by the Election Commission. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi observed that since the petitioners had not sought interim relief during the initial hearing, it could not be granted at this stage. The bench stated the matter would be interpreted definitively at a later hearing. Due to a lack of time, the bench adjourned the hearing, scheduling the final arguments for July 29. During the brief hearing, the apex court emphasised that Aadhaar and Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) should be used as valid documents for voter verification. When senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, representing the ECI, raised concerns about the authenticity of certain documents - particularly ration cards - the court noted, "Ration cards can be forged easily. But Aadhaar and voter ID cards carry a presumption of genuineness and sanctity. You proceed with these two documents. Where forgery is suspected, deal with it on a case-by-case basis." Several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the ECI's June 26 directive ordering the Special Intensive Revision. The petitioners argue that, if not reversed, the directive could arbitrarily disenfranchise lakhs of voters and undermine free and fair elections - cornerstones of India's democracy.

OBCs will get majority of party tickets for local body polls: BJP president
The BJP will give majority of party tickets to the OBCs in the scheduled local body polls in Telangana irrespective of whether the Congress government promulgates an ordinance or not on providing 42% quota to the Backward Classes, declared party president N. Ramchander Rao on Monday. Addressing OBC Morcha leaders here at the State office, Mr. Rao claimed that the 'real' population of the BCs is about 52% but the previous Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had reduced it and the current Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is further trying to scuttle it by including Muslims in the quota. It was the BJP alone which has been giving importance to the BCs by having 27 ministers in the Union Cabinet apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself hailing from among them. The BC Commission was formed and given a constitutional status under the NDA government, he said. But, the former MLC said a conspiracy has been hatched by the Congress to drive a wedge between the BJP and the BCs by carrying out a disinformation campaign just like it had campaigned that reservations would be removed if Mr. Modi was re-elected in the last elections. Mr. Rao also charged that the socio-economic caste survey taken up by the Congress government was not done as per the constitutional norms. He was of the opinion that it was a mere survey taken up by the government and only constitutionally mandated agencies like the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India are authorised to take up such studies. The BJP president demanded the government to make the caste survey report public for people to ascertain the facts. The party is not against caste census but said it has to be done in a scientific manner and as per the Constitution. The census next year by the Centre which includes caste enumeration is in that league and once the report is out, targeted schemes can be taken up appropriately, said the BJP leader. The BJP chief has accused the Congress government of using the BC quota for vote bank politics and said if the Modi government had brought forth 10% EWS (Economically Weaker Section) quota it was done without disturbing the existing SC/ST/BC reservations. Meanwhile, Mr. Rao will be continuing his ongoing district tours and will be visiting Khammam, Bhadradri-Kothagudem and Mahabubabad districts on July 29 and 30.
