OBCs will get majority of party tickets for local body polls: BJP president

The Hindu2 days ago
The BJP will give majority of party tickets to the OBCs in the scheduled local body polls in Telangana irrespective of whether the Congress government promulgates an ordinance or not on providing 42% quota to the Backward Classes, declared party president N. Ramchander Rao on Monday.
Addressing OBC Morcha leaders here at the State office, Mr. Rao claimed that the 'real' population of the BCs is about 52% but the previous Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had reduced it and the current Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is further trying to scuttle it by including Muslims in the quota.
It was the BJP alone which has been giving importance to the BCs by having 27 ministers in the Union Cabinet apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself hailing from among them. The BC Commission was formed and given a constitutional status under the NDA government, he said.
But, the former MLC said a conspiracy has been hatched by the Congress to drive a wedge between the BJP and the BCs by carrying out a disinformation campaign just like it had campaigned that reservations would be removed if Mr. Modi was re-elected in the last elections.
Mr. Rao also charged that the socio-economic caste survey taken up by the Congress government was not done as per the constitutional norms. He was of the opinion that it was a mere survey taken up by the government and only constitutionally mandated agencies like the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India are authorised to take up such studies.
The BJP president demanded the government to make the caste survey report public for people to ascertain the facts. The party is not against caste census but said it has to be done in a scientific manner and as per the Constitution. The census next year by the Centre which includes caste enumeration is in that league and once the report is out, targeted schemes can be taken up appropriately, said the BJP leader.
The BJP chief has accused the Congress government of using the BC quota for vote bank politics and said if the Modi government had brought forth 10% EWS (Economically Weaker Section) quota it was done without disturbing the existing SC/ST/BC reservations. Meanwhile, Mr. Rao will be continuing his ongoing district tours and will be visiting Khammam, Bhadradri-Kothagudem and Mahabubabad districts on July 29 and 30.

Cong mulls statues of Mukesh Goud, Shiv Shankar to woo BCs in Hyd'bad

Hyderabad: In a move aimed at bolstering the momentum for 42% Backward Classes (BC) reservation and garnering support for the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election and GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) elections, the Congress party has decided to install statues of former BC Welfare Minister M Mukesh Goud and former Union Minister P Shiv Shankar within the city. The announcement was made by Congress leaders, including PCC (Pradesh Congress Committee) president B Mahesh Kumar Goud and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, on the death anniversary of Mukesh Goud. 'There remains a growing demand for the installation of statues of leaders representing BCs who served the city,' Mahesh Goud clarified to the media. 'We shall be installing the statues at a proper place after consulting with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.' Earlier, during an informal interaction with media persons, Ponnam Prabhakar also stated that a decision had been taken to install their statues in honour of their services to BCs and in recognition of their contributions to the party. 'Services of both leaders cannot be ignored, and in reflection of the recognition for their services, statues will be installed. A decision will be taken where and when these can be installed and will be finalised after discussing with the Chief Minister,' he said.

Ponnam dangles JH seat carrot for local candidate

Hyderabad: Hyderabad's In-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar today clarified that the Congress party will allocate the ticket for the Jubilee Hills by-election to a local candidate, stating that individuals from outside the constituency would not be considered this time. Speaking to media persons in the presence of cricketer-turned-politician Mohammad Azharuddin, Ponnam gave a clear indication that Azharuddin would contest once again from the key constituency. The Transport Minister affirmed that party cadres would work unitedly for the victory of whichever candidate is fielded by the party high command. He exuded confidence that the Congress party would hoist its flag in the Jubilee Hills constituency. The by-election for the Jubilee Hills seat was necessitated by the death of the sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath of the BRS. Gopinath, who had defeated his nearest rival, Azharuddin, by over 16,000 votes in 2023, died of cardiac arrest on June 8. Azharuddin, who also serves as PCC Working President, had earlier declared himself as a candidate amidst speculation that the party was unlikely to field him in the by-election. For Jubilee Hills, scores of party leaders are vying to contest. Besides Azharuddin, former Mayor BonthuRammohan, TMREIS chairman Md Faheemuddin Qureshi, former PCC working president Jetti Kusum Kumar, V Naveen Yadav (who contested from AIMIM in 2014), C Rohin Reddy (who recently contested from Amberpet), and numerous others are eyeing the ticket. Azharuddin, who recently attended the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting, has made his intentions clear that he is willing to contest once again from the Jubilee Hills constituency, despite his loss in the 2023 Assembly polls. Bonthu Rammohan, who had maintained a low profile until recent days following his failure to secure the Secunderabad MP ticket, is once again attempting to re-enter the limelight and claims to have a strong grip on constituents. His wife, Sridevi, the Cherlapally division corporator, is said to have a good support base in the constituency. Coming from the Kamma caste, Kusum Kumar had previously sought an MLC position, with his candidature also backed by former MLC T Jagga Reddy, citing the need for proper representation for Kammas.

Paddy Procurement: BRS sniffs money laundering in tenders; knocks at ED door

Hyderabad: Alleging widespread money laundering in the paddy procurement tenders, where bidders reportedly collected an additional Rs 2,230 per tonne from millers, BRS leaders today submitted details of these financial transactions to the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Addressing a press conference after lodging the complaint at the ED office, former Chairman of the Civil Supplies Corporation, Peddi Sudarshan Reddy, accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, Civil Supplies Commissioner, and other officials of involvement in the paddy procurement tender scam, which he claimed took place 18 months ago. 'We have held eight press conferences on this scam, but there has been no response from the Congress or the government,' Sudarshan Reddy stated. 'Our leaders KTR and Harish Rao raised this issue in the Assembly, but there has been no response. We have also approached the High Court. The bidders collected Rs 2,230 per tonne of grain from the rice millers and sent it to the Congress leaders. We have collected the details of the accounts where the money was received illegally. Money laundering took place in this. Today, we have filed a complaint with the Enforcement Directorate with the evidence we have collected.' The BRS leader confirmed that they had prepared a booklet of more than 700 pages and were sending it to various investigating agencies. 'The culprits would definitely be punished in this scam. No one can escape,' he asserted. He also noted that the BJP's failure to respond to the matter was 'raising many suspicions.' Reddy accused the Congress party of acting like a 'gang of thieves,' stating, 'They were looting like a gang of robbers. We have exposed this robbery. We will not rest until the investigating agencies catch the thieves, as Rs 423 crore were illegally transferred to various accounts.' He added that the government's failure to file a counter, despite the High Court's repeated requests, was proof that the scam had indeed occurred. Gangula Kamalakar alleged that the tenders were issued to sell 35 lakh tonnes of paddy within 90 days, and that irregularities were present from the outset. He claimed that money that should have gone into the government treasury had instead gone into private individuals' accounts. Despite a complaint being filed at the Panjagutta police station regarding the matter, FIR was registered, while FIRs were being registered against BRS activists for even minor complaints. 'We have faith in the investigation agencies. Why doesn't the ACB respond to this scam?' Kamalakar questioned. 'We are complaining to all the investigation agencies in the state as well as the Centre about this scam. Union Ministers Bandi Sanjay and Kishan Reddy should have opened their mouths by now.' MLC Naveen Kumar Reddy, former corporation chairmen M Srinivas Reddy, Vasudeva Reddy, Satish Reddy, and BRS leader B Ramamurthy were also present.
