Edwards gets 4 hits, Pauley and Hernández hit solo HRs, Marlins beat Astros 6-4
MIAMI (AP) — Xavier Edwards went 4 for 5 with a double, Graham Pauley and Heriberto Hernández each hit a solo homer and the Miami Marlins beat Houston 6-4 on Wednesday to snap a seven-game losing streak against the Astros. Janson Junk (6-2) allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in five innings. The Marlins are 8-2 in Junk's 10 starts since joining the rotation June 20. Lake Bachar pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save. Liam Hicks, Otto Lopez and Hernández each hit an RBI single off Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti (1-2) in the first to make it 3-2, and the Marlins led the rest of the way. Edwards doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Agustín Ramírez in the second. Hernandez's homer in the third made it 5-2. Christian Walker hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Houston. Mauricio Dubón doubled and scored when Carlos Correa followed with another double in the fifth. Victor Caratini added an RBI double in the sixth. Pauley hit a solo shot to make it 6-3 in the fifth. Key moment Pinch-hitter Jeremy Peña singled to load the bases with one out in the Houston eighth, but Calvin Faucher got Cam Smith to ground into a forceout at home and Dubón to pop out to end the threat and preserve Miami's 6-4 lead. Try it free ARLINGTON, Texas — There is no running from Devin Williams' struggles, but the Yankees are not going to run from Williams, either. Aaron Boone said Wednesday morning the Yankees need to 'keep running him out there,' despite Williams coming off back-to-back days in which he blew the game — a 5-4 lead in the ninth inning Monday and a scoreless game in the eighth inning Tuesday, both of which ended in losses. It seems likely that Boone will try to find some lower-leverage landing spots for Williams his next few times out, as he did earlier this season after temporarily removing him from the closer's role. But the Yankees also do not plan on hiding him. 'It's similar to after getting off to a rough start [this season], he rallied from that and really threw up a couple months of really consistent, outstanding work,' Boone said Wednesday before David Bednar secured the five-out save in a thrilling 3-2 win at Globe Life Field. 'No reason to think he can't do that again. But it has not happened of late, as Williams has given up a run in six of his past eight outings with a 9.39 ERA during that stretch. It has been reminiscent of how he started the year, when he had an 11.25 ERA through his first 10 games. In between those stretches, Williams pitched to a 2.63 ERA in 29 games, which is what gives the Yankees hope he can still be an important arm out of the bullpen. 'I think wherever he's pitching, if he's pitching like he's capable of, he's got a chance to be massively successful,' Boone said. 'Part of it is now we have, after the deadline, bringing in a number of guys that have a ton of back-end, closing-type experience. Wizards' Tre Johnson threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Nationals
Washington Wizards rookie Tre Johnson threw out the ceremonial first pitch on Wednesday as the Washington Nationals continued a three-game series against the Athletics. Johnson was joined by fellow first-year teammates Will Riley (No. 21 pick) and Jamir Watkins (No. 43 pick) at Nationals Park for the occasion. He took the mound, delivered the pitch and posed for photos afterward with right fielder Daylen Lile and Screech, the team mascot. The Nationals were looking to even the series against the Athletics after suffering a 16-7 loss on Tuesday, falling to 44-68 on the season. They are in last place in the NL East. Johnson was the SEC Freshman of the Year last season at Texas, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 33 games on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He was the 10th player in program history to be honored as Freshman of the Year. The sixth pick in the NBA draft debuted with the Wizards in the NBA Summer League, averaging 19.5 points, three rebounds, 1.5 assists and one steal on 45.5% shooting from 3-point range in two appearances. He finished with 21 points on July 13. Johnson is among a crowded draft class for the Wizards as the organization continues to build toward the future. The team was excited to add the trio and is eager to watch the players take the court.
