UTCA to hold Chandigarh Premier League from Aug 28
'While UTCA has been working since 2014, it got the BCCI affiliation in 2019 and since then our focus has been on the senior teams as well as the U19 and U16 teams. Our senior teams have been competing on the national circuit including Ranji Trophy since 2019 and the juror teams too have been competing at the national level. Apart from the tournaments like Balram ji Das Tandon Memorial U-16 tournament and U-19 Gully Cricket, UTCA had also introduced the T20 league in 2023 which was then converted into a franchise model for the second edition this February. With the third edition of the league, our aim is to develop the Chandigarh Premier League like IPL. While we have missed on a broadcasting partner this year, we expect to do the same next edition,' said UTCA president Sanjay Tandon while unveiling the six teams during the league launch.
Manan Vohra will captain Altruistians while Shivam Bhambri will captain Chandigarh Kings. Dr Morepan Dazzlers will be captained by Mohd Arslan Khan while Capital Strokers will be captained by Raj Angad Bawa. Sandeep Sharma will captain Talanoa Tigers while Ankit Kaushik will captain Panchkula Bashers. 'While states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have been conducting T20 leagues since 2016, UTCA is one of the eight state units under the BCCI conducting its own T20 League. While the groundwork and other formalities at Sector 16 Stadium are set to be completed in coming days before the start of the league, the floodlights currently are not as per league requirements. The league will see morning and afternoon matches this year. We hope that the floodlights will be upgraded so that the league will be played in a day-night multiple matches format starting next year,' said Tandon.
UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria will inaugurate the league on August 26 at Sector 16 stadium. The final of the league will be played on September 13 and 1983 World Cup winning Indian captain Kapil Dev will be the chief guest during the final.

Vinod Kambli Better Than Sachin Tendulkar? Brother Claims 'Never Heard Him Say...'
Last Updated: Virendra Kambli clarified his brother Vinod never claimed to be better than Sachin Tendulkar. Vinod Kambli's brother, Virendra, has said that the former India star never called himself better than Sachin Tendulkar, despite a media rhetoric built around that. Kambli and Tendulkar were best of friends and came through the same Mumbai system to make their debut for India as prodigies. However, while Tendulkar went on to be the highest run-scorer in international cricket and among the most respected in the world, Kambli fell through, plagued by controversies. It's difficult to sieve out which controversy was Kambli's fault and which wasn't, but the contrasting careers have birthed claims that he was even better than Tendulkar, and only lacked the so-called 'discipline'. 'Both had the same talent," Virendra declared to Vickey Lalwani in an interview. 'You can't say my brother was greater than Sachin or vice versa. They were both the same. I never heard my brother say he was better than Sachin." Virendra was also asked about reported rifts between the two cricketers, and about statements from Kambli (which he later took back) that Tendulkar let him down when he needed support. 'No, that's not true," Virendra said. 'Sachin dada has always supported Vinod. Their friendship is still very strong. Sachin calls and checks on him with Andrea (Kambli's wife)." 'Sachin Dada. He was closest to him," he said. 'I don't know about others, but I saw them together when I would go to watch Ranji Trophy matches. I would go to the dressing room to eat, and Sachin Dada, Vinod, and I would sit together and have fun. We would joke around and have a good time." Virendera, too, played some cricket growing up and now runs an academy. 'Don't get carried away': Virendra Kambli's message to young kids Virendra tip-towed around the subject of indiscipline about Kambli, but did mention that he got too carried away in the glamour of the sport. Virendra added that he still advises his students not to 'go overboard'. 'I will give this message: If you play cricket and get glamour, learn to be grounded. Be down-to-earth. I have also been playing cricket for many years. I have learned by watching Sachin Dada and Vinod Dada. I have learned by watching their batting on TV. I have seen their hard work since childhood. I tell the kids to work hard. If you get success after working hard, then hold on to that success. Don't go overboard, as we say. Don't get carried away," he said in the interview. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. It's been over a year since Umran Malik was last seen playing competitive cricket. It was an IPL 2024 match in March for Sunrisers Hyderabad which they won by 31 runs against Mumbai Indians. Malik bowled just one over and was creamed for 15 runs in what was a high-scoring affair. After featuring in just one game for SRH in IPL 2024, he was released by the franchise ahead of the mega auctions where he was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders at his base price. However, he was ruled out of the last season before it got underway due to an injury. Malik burst onto the scene as a tearaway pacer could regularly bowl in the 150kphs. In IPL 2021, playing for SRH, he took 22 wickets in 14 games and the performance saw him make his India debut in the same year. However, since then, his career – international and domestic – has suffered due to a series of injuries and illness. Now, he's plotting is competitive return and is set to feature in the ongoing Buchi Babu tournament in Chennai where he will represent Jammu and Kashmir. The 25-year-old says having played enough red-ball and T20 matches in Kashmir has helped him build up the workload for the season ahead. 'I'm feeling good. I haven't played cricket for a long time. I was injured for seven-eight months. It was a struggling phase. It feels really good to be back," Malik told ESPNcricinfo. 'I have played a lot of red-ball and T20 matches in Kashmir. It was our registration camp. We have come to Chennai for the Buchi Babu. It is good to play as many matches as I can. It is good for my body's workload. I've come back and will do well in the season. That's my aim." Malik spent nearly six months at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru where did his rehab. Now, he's focused on maintaining the right mindset while avoiding outside noise, especially the chatter on social media. 'Injury is a part of life for a sportsman. It is bound to happen. At that time, I kept myself strong. I kept my mindset right. Everything is fine now," Malik said. 'Yeah, I'll be bowling in full rhythm now. I'm a sportsman and I don't pay attention to social media. Actually, I want to play cricket. I just want to protect my body from injuries, and I want to play cricket well. I want to play for India and that's my aim. I will play the matches after this Buchi Babu, and I think the Ranji Trophy. Hopefully, I can take wickets and make a comeback," he added. Malik has also been training with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar who is now back with KKR 'I'm developing three-four new variations. I'm also working with Abhishek, P Krishna Kumar (J&K bowling coach) and Ajay Sharma, he is our head coach. I had a camp with Abhishek two weeks back here in Chennai and it felt good to work with him," he said. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
