High-speed chase: Cop on bike pursues, boards, secures truck

Time of India20-05-2025
Chennai: It was a scene straight out of the movies. A
hijacked truck
speeds down a crowded highway, police personnel on bikes give chase and one of them acrobatically clambers on to the truck and tries to pull out the driver.
Finally, after a 10km run, the driver crashes the truck.
This actually happened on Tuesday on Trichy-Chennai highway near the Paranur toll plaza.
Police said Kamalakannan was driving a truck with M-sand from Chengalpet towards Vandalur when, at the Paranur toll plaza, he found there was insufficient balance in the FASTag account. So, he parked the truck by the roadside and called up its owner, Anbu, a resident of Kelambakkam in Chengalpet.
Just then a man lurking near the toll plaza suddenly jumped into the lorry and drove away toward Chennai.
Kamalakkannan informed patrolling police teams who via walkie-talkie alerted police stationed at Mahindra City and Singaperumal Koil. They set up barricades, but the truck crashed through and sped away. Policemen gave chase on two-wheelers. One of them climbed on to the speeding truck and tried to pull the suspect out.

Eventually, near Maraimalai Nagar railway station, the hijacker crashed the lorry into a roadside barrier in an attempt to escape. Police surrounded and captured him after a brief struggle. Witnesses said they were lucky, no one was hurt during the truck's reckless journey.
Police identified the runaway driver as Subash, 35, from Palayamkottai. Police said Subash had been wandering around the Paranur toll plaza for the past two days, apparently mentally unwell. They suspect that the previous night he broke into a nearby temple and stole construction materials. He also reportedly attempted to rob women walking alone in the area.
Subash has been sent him to the Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, for observation.

Panchkula court denies bail to Kalka man in ₹19-crore Input Tax Credit fraud

The court of additional sessions judge Neeru Kamboj has dismissed the bail application of Aniket Verma, 26, of Kalka, accused of causing a loss of ₹19.02 crore to the government exchequer through fraudulent Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims.A case was registered against him for offences under the CGST Act on June 10 on the complaint of a senior intelligence officer of the directorate general of GST Intelligence, Chandigarh zonal unit. While Verma's counsel argued he was falsely implicated, the court held no grounds existed for bail at this stage. (HT File) According to the prosecution, Verma was the proprietor of M/s Balaji Trading Company, a fictitious firm with a registered office in Parwanoo, which was found locked during inspection. Investigations revealed that Verma was operating three firms — two in his own name and one in his wife's name. All registrations were suspended after officials found fraudulent ITC claims without actual supply of goods or services. M/s Balaji Trading Company allegedly availed ITC of ₹12.47 crore on fake invoices worth ₹69.27 crore. His second firm, M/s Aniket Steel and Brothers, availed ITC of ₹6.02 crore on bogus supply of ₹33.44 crore. The third, M/s NV Industrial Corporation, registered in his wife's name, was created to secure a business loan. The probe also found that e-way bills falsely showed light passenger cars transporting heavy goods like MS scrap and cement, far exceeding vehicle capacity. Officials concluded the transactions were fictitious only to fraudulently avail ITC. While Verma's counsel argued he was falsely implicated, the court held no grounds existed for bail at this stage.

Letter row in CPI(M): Kerala Minister M.B. Rajesh alleges attempts to defame him ahead of elections

Kerala's Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh said in Kochi on Monday (August 18, 2025) that the attempt to include him among the leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] having alleged financial links with a U.K.-based Keralite businessperson was to 'defame' him by raising baseless allegations ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections. He was referring to the controversy following the media leak of a purported 'confidential complaint' to the CPI(M) Polit Bureau, reportedly accusing an assemblage of party leaders from Kerala, including former Ministers, of partnering in financial shenanigans allegedly enabled by the businessman. 'This purported letter has been doing the rounds in WhatsApp for the last four years. Such documents that should be thrown into the dustbin will emerge again as the elections are a few months away,' he told mediapersons. Asked whether the businessman was his alleged benami, the Minister said he realised the 'intent' of the query. 'You want to make it the headline. Hence I am not responding to the question,' he said. Mr. Rajesh said similar allegations had surfaced against him ahead of the previous Assembly election as well. 'It included the allegations around the appointment of my wife [as a faculty member at the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit] and the accusation that I was aiding the accused in the Walayar case. The investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation had brought out the truth behind the Walayar case,' he said.
