High-speed chase: Cop on bike pursues, boards, secures truck
Chennai: It was a scene straight out of the movies. A
hijacked truck
speeds down a crowded highway, police personnel on bikes give chase and one of them acrobatically clambers on to the truck and tries to pull out the driver.
Finally, after a 10km run, the driver crashes the truck.
This actually happened on Tuesday on Trichy-Chennai highway near the Paranur toll plaza.
Police said Kamalakannan was driving a truck with M-sand from Chengalpet towards Vandalur when, at the Paranur toll plaza, he found there was insufficient balance in the FASTag account. So, he parked the truck by the roadside and called up its owner, Anbu, a resident of Kelambakkam in Chengalpet.
Just then a man lurking near the toll plaza suddenly jumped into the lorry and drove away toward Chennai.
Kamalakkannan informed patrolling police teams who via walkie-talkie alerted police stationed at Mahindra City and Singaperumal Koil. They set up barricades, but the truck crashed through and sped away. Policemen gave chase on two-wheelers. One of them climbed on to the speeding truck and tried to pull the suspect out.

Eventually, near Maraimalai Nagar railway station, the hijacker crashed the lorry into a roadside barrier in an attempt to escape. Police surrounded and captured him after a brief struggle. Witnesses said they were lucky, no one was hurt during the truck's reckless journey.
Police identified the runaway driver as Subash, 35, from Palayamkottai. Police said Subash had been wandering around the Paranur toll plaza for the past two days, apparently mentally unwell. They suspect that the previous night he broke into a nearby temple and stole construction materials. He also reportedly attempted to rob women walking alone in the area.
Subash has been sent him to the Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, for observation.

'It's shameful Bengaluru couldn't manage 1km victory parade': RCB gave city pride but poor planning brought it shame
BENGALURU: A perfect storm of giddy, overenthusiastic fans, poor planning by officials, bad stadium management, stretched police force, shortage of time, clueless event management and lack of communication between stakeholders resulted in the tragic and totally avoidable, deaths of 11 RCB fans and left 75 injured. At the crack of dawn, RCB lit up social media with the big news: The champions were flying home with the coveted IPL trophy and would celebrate with a grand victory parade in Bengaluru. It was an announcement that caught the cops unawares as they had no communication about it. But it sent the already-electrified fanbase into overdrive. Then came the colossal collective failure: Cops failed to act swiftly and draw up crowd-control plans. Politicians turned the celebration into a photo-op frenzy, brushing aside warnings in their race to bask in reflected glory. Many brought their families to Vidhana Soudha to pose with the cricketers. "RCB gave the city a reason to celebrate. But police and netas turned that joy into grief with their sheer incompetence. It's shameful that Bengaluru couldn't manage a 1km victory parade," said the grieving brother of one of the victims. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Even senior bureaucrats admitted that the lives could have been saved with proper planning and coordination. "The RCB management did not consult us before announcing a victory parade. We would not have allowed it given the crazy celebrations that unfolded on the streets on Tuesday night. But the political bosses were in no mood to listen, they wanted us to go ahead with bandobust," a senior police officer said. Those who fell were trampled Till mid-afternoon, there was no clarity whether there was a parade and where the events would be held. Senior cops were informed only around 2pm to be at the stadium and the assembly. By which time, the crowds had already gathered. At the cricket stadium, the scenes from early afternoon held bad portents. Fans had started flocking to the gates by noon and it was apparent to any bystander that things would get of control soon. TOI reporters, who could not even get in, found that most gates stayed shut and false rumours of gate numbers led to a huge rush. Naturally, barricades collapsed, metal grills broke down and those who fell — mostly young people and women — were unable to get up and got crushed and trampled.

How did unpaid electricity bills in Bhopal city alone cross 100 cr?
Bhopal: There are at least 86 domestic consumers in the city who owe more than Rs 1 lakh each in outstanding electricity bills. The consumer with the highest outstanding amount owes more than Rs 4.2 lakh. Overall, the amount that remains outstanding with these 86 domestic consumers ranges between Rs 4.2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh. If the overall amount of unpaid bills is considered and calculated, it comes to more than Rs 100 crores in Bhopal city alone. The question that remains unanswered is how outstanding amounts in the city reached such high levels when the connection of a normal domestic consumer is typically disconnected if the outstanding amount is above Rs 5000. Sources from the discom say that the majority of these consumers, who have outstanding amounts above Rs 1 lakh, have some form of dispute, and in many cases, the matter is also sub-judice. For instance, in the case of the consumer with the highest outstanding amount, it is the domestic connection of a colony that comes under the Katara Hills distribution office of the discom. Sources said that this consumer has been paying regular bills, but a disputed amount of around Rs 4.15 lakh has been due for several years, as the matter related to it is in court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo TOI also checked the current bill of the consumer, which states that the current month's bill amount is Rs 2246, the delayed payment surcharge is Rs 5199, and old arrears are Rs 4,15,881, making the overall amount payable Rs 4,21,079. This means that the connection is still active, and the consumer is paying month on month, only the old arrear is not being paid. After the list of those who have outstanding amounts of more than Rs 1 lakh, comes the category of those consumers who have outstanding amounts between Rs 10,000 and Rs 1 lakh—overall, there are 16,681 such consumers. The consumer with the maximum outstanding amount in this category owes Rs 99,797, and the consumer with the lowest outstanding amount in this category owes Rs 10,001. Besides these, there are 19,704 consumers who have an outstanding between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 to the discom. This amount is as of June 2, 2025.
