KUALA LUMPUR: The body of a Rohingya girl, feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents in a drain near the MPAJ Hall in Kampung Cheras Baru, Ampang on Monday (May 19) night, was found on Tuesday (May 20) morning.
Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail said the 10-year-old victim's body was discovered in Sungai Kerayong, Taman Cheras Indah, near here at 11.20am, about six kilometres from where she was reported to have fallen into a fast-flowing drain.
"The body was taken to Ampang Hospital for a post-mortem," he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department's Water Rescue Team (PPDA) operations commander Mohamad Riduan Akhyar said the victim's body was found stuck along the riverbank and has been handed over to the police for further action.
He said 11 members of the PPDA from the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department, along with rescuers from the Cheras and Bandar Tun Razak Fire and Rescue Stations, resumed the search for the victim at around 9am on Tuesday.
It was reported on Tueday that the victim, identified as Nur Aida Nur Muhammad, and another child aged 11, fell into the drain. Police received the report about the incident at 6.07pm.
Public members rescued the other child, while the strong current swept away Nur Aida.
It is understood that both children were on their way home from school when the incident occurred.
Meanwhile, the victim's father, Nur Muhammad Tufail Ahmad, 36, expressed his deep regret over not being able to fulfil Nur Aida's wish for a family holiday.
He said his eldest child of four often asked to go on holiday with the family, but her request could not be fulfilled due to work commitments.
"A few days before the incident, she said she wanted to go out for a trip. I promised I would take her, but never got the chance. Now, I'm filled with regret," he said, holding back tears.
He added that although he has come to terms with the loss, the absence of his daughter is deeply felt, especially given her helpful nature and how she often assisted her mother, who is currently in confinement after giving birth to their fourth child.
He said at the time of the incident, Nur Aida was on her way home from school when she was swept away by strong currents along with a friend, who was rescued by members of the public. - Bernama

Police take statement from bus driver after crash kills three

KUALA KRAI: Police have recorded a statement from an express bus driver to assist in investigations into a crash that killed three family members here today. District police chief Superintendent Mazlan Mamat said the statement was taken from the 43-year-old driver shortly after the accident, which occurred at Km104 Jalan Kota Baru–Gua Musang. He said the driver's urine test came back negative. "The victims were a 39-year-old woman, her 18-year-old daughter, and her 24-year-old son-in-law," he said. Mazlan said the three, who were from Johor, were heading to Kota Baru for a relative's wedding when the incident occurred at about 11.30am. "Initial investigations revealed that the driver of the Perodua Myvi attempted to overtake another vehicle but failed, resulting in a head-on collision with the express bus, which was travelling from Kota Baru to Kuala Lumpur." He said the crash occurred on a dual-carriageway with a 90kph speed limit. "The impact caused severe injuries to the car occupants, who died at the scene. Their bodies, which were trapped in the wreckage, were extricated by the Fire and Rescue Department," he said. Mazlan said the bus driver sustained minor injuries from shattered glass, while all bus passengers were unharmed. The victims' remains were sent to the Forensic Unit of Hospital Sultan Ismail Petra in Kuala Krai for post-mortem examinations. "The accident is believed to have been caused by the Myvi driver's negligence while overtaking," he said, adding that motorists should always adhere to speed limits and traffic rules. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information to contact the Kuala Krai Traffic Police or Investigating Officer Inspector Mohamad Amirul Izham Azlan at 09-9666222.

Long Tiger gets 12 years' jail, 5 strokes of rotan for raping married woman

Hamim Hamid was accused of raping a woman in a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, Johor, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Hamim Hamid, a Rohingya man notoriously known as 'Long Tiger', was sentenced by the court today to 12 years' imprisonment and five strokes of the rotan for raping a married woman in 2019. Harian Metro reported that Muar sessions court judge Irwan Suainbon pronounced the sentence on the 36-year-old after the court ruled that he had failed to raise a reasonable doubt to the prosecution's case. Irwan said the accused's defence to the charge was merely a bare denial. 'The defence presented by the accused also failed to refute the prosecution's prima facie case. 'The court has determined that the prosecution has successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. 'The court also found that the statement from the accused's wife, who was the 11th defence witness, was a fabrication and cannot be believed,' he said. Hamim was accused of raping a married woman, who was 19 years old at the time, in a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, Johor, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code with rape, which provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and a whipping upon conviction. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Arif Marzuki asked the court to consider the public interest, the seriousness of the crime, and the trauma inflicted when sentencing. 'It is even more appalling that the victim had just suffered a miscarriage a few days prior to the rape,' he said. The court said Hamim's jail sentence would run from the date of his arrest on Aug 7, 2021. He is currently serving another four-year sentence for extortion by threat of accusation of an offence, under Section 388 of the Penal Code. The Tangkak magistrates' court also sentenced him to 12 months' imprisonment on Jan 20, 2022, for escaping custody on Dec 15, 2021. He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to two years' imprisonment, a fine or both.

In Johor, ‘Long Tiger' jailed 12 years, whipped for raping married woman who had just miscarried

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — A Rohingya man known as 'Long Tiger' was today sentenced to 12 years in prison and five strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court in Muar, Johor, after being found guilty of raping a married woman four years ago. Judge Irwan Suainbon handed down the sentence to Abdul Hamim Ab Hamid, 36, after ruling that the defence had failed to raise any reasonable doubt over the charge, Harian Metro reported today. In delivering his judgment, Irwan stated that the defence's arguments amounted to mere denial. 'Furthermore, the accused's defence failed to refute the prosecution's prima facie case. 'After reviewing both oral and written submissions from the prosecution and defence, the court concluded that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. 'The court also found the testimony of the accused's wife, who was the 11th defence witness (DW11), to be fabricated and unreliable,' he said. Throughout the trial, the prosecution called seven witnesses. According to the charge, Long Tiger raped a 19-year-old woman at a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak between 1pm and 2.05pm on September 26, 2019. He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Arif Marzuki urged the court to consider public interest, noting the gravity of the offence and its lasting psychological impact on the victim. 'It is especially revolting that the accused raped the victim, who had just recently suffered a miscarriage. She was his employee and was subjected to this horrific abuse,' he submitted. The court ruled that the prison sentence would take effect from the date of his arrest, 7 August 2021. Long Tiger is currently serving a four-year sentence handed down by the Tangkak Magistrates' Court after being convicted under Section 388 of the Penal Code. The father of two must complete that sentence before serving the one under Section 376(1). On January 20, 2022, he was sentenced by the same court to 12 months' imprisonment for escaping custody at 11.55am on December 15, 2021. He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code for that offence, which provides for up to two years in jail, a fine, or both. Additionally, on June 1, 2022, the Muar High Court overturned a discharge not amounting to an acquittal previously granted by the Tangkak Magistrates' Court on May 17 in the Section 388 case, citing an error in the original order.
