At a press conference, Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a prominent OBC face of BJP, called the caste enumeration a "gamechanger decision" and recounted instances when Congress opposed reservations.
He accused Congress, particularly its 'first family', of hypocrisy on social justice, saying members of the Nehru-Gandhi family have opposed reservations, starting with the first PM who wrote to CMs to oppose caste-based quotas. "It became a practice with them. Indira Gandhi did not act on the recommendations of the Kalelkar committee for extending reservations to OBCs, Rajiv Gandhi opposed the recommendations of the Mandal commission, and Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi did nothing to promote OBCs' welfare during the UPA decade, when they called the shots," said the education minister.
He said Rahul remembered OBCs' interests only after Congress had been rejected with no sign of the party regaining power anytime soon. "Their statements reflect that the approach to social justice is just a facade, often confined to political gains for their family. In contrast, PM Modi, who hails from a humble, disadvantaged background, has not only advocated for social justice but has also made it a reality through policies and execution," he said. Stating "the only caste count was done in 1931, before Independence", he asked, "Why didn't they do it in 1951 and after? Who was in office, who controlled govt (sic)?"

1 2 Chandigarh: Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Thursday urged the Centre to pay the state govt a total of Rs 60,000 crore, including a pending goods and services tax (GST) compensation and other outstanding funds. Cheema criticised the "arbitrary" rationalisation of GST tax slabs as a "gamble" by the Centre, calling it BJP's "jumlebaazi" (fraud). He also questioned the move to rationalise GST by slashing "sin tax" on goods like unmanufactured tobacco and cigarettes. After attending back-to-back meetings of the Union govt's group of ministers (GoM) on GST in New Delhi, Cheema told TOI that the state suffered substantial financial losses under the GST regime without receiving due compensation. "Centre wants to shatter the economy of the states and it is the biggest attack on India's federal structure. When states don't have funds to carry out developmental works, they will have to approach the Centre with folded hands for constructing schools and hospitals. Since the introduction of the GST regime, 27 exemptions have been given to various sectors and items, and rates have been revised 15 times already. It shows the Centre's GST system is faulty and needs to be corrected," he said. Providing a breakdown of the Rs 60,000-crore demand, Cheema said the amount includes Rs 50,000 crore for uncompensated GST losses, Rs 8,000 crore in pending rural development fund (RDF), and an additional Rs 1,000 crore that is set to be withdrawn from the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna by dropping certain projects in the state. Cheema highlighted the financial impact on Punjab since GST regime was introduced. "Since the introduction of GST, Punjab has suffered a loss of Rs 1,11,045 crore," he said. He added that while the state's revenue projection was Rs 2,37,520 crore, Rs 1,26,485 crore was promised as compensation under the GST regime. The minister also voiced concerns over the Centre's handling of the compensation cess and the slashing of tax on "sin" goods. He alleged that Punjab suffered financial losses due to the Centre's "wrong policies". He added if the state had not joined the 'one-nation, one-tax' regime, its tax collection would have been much higher. Regarding the tax rate changes, Cheema accused the Centre of "gambling in the name of rationalisation" and randomly changing slabs. He cited the example of tax on unmanufactured tobacco being slashed from 90-98% to 40%, while the tax on cigarettes was reduced from 33-64% to 40%. He questioned how this could be a move to ensure people's health. He noted that the tax on processed food like pasta was proposed to be reduced from 12% to 5%. "At the meeting, we demanded that the state should be compensated on account of any losses due to rationalisation of GST rates," he said. Slamming the BJP, he said, "It is jumlebazi of the BJP-led Centre. They say people will celebrate Diwali, but they have played a gamble by trying to make some goods cheap and others costly... We have supported some of the changes, but the Centre should compensate the states for the losses." During his recent Independence Day speech, PM Narendra Modi announced that "next-generation GST reforms" would be unveiled by Diwali, referring to them as a "Diwali gift" and a "double Diwali" for the people. Calcutta HC division bench refuses to interfere with single-judge WBJEE result order
A division bench of the Calcutta High Court in a hearing on Thursday (August 21, 2025) refused to interfere with an earlier single-judge order that directed the State to prepare a new merit list and publish the results of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination by August 22, providing 7% reservation to Other Backward Classes (OBC) candidates recognised pre-2010. The Calcutta High Court in May 2024 had struck down all OBC certificates issued in West Bengal since 2010. The matter surrounding revisions in the State government's OBC list is currently pending with the Supreme Court. The declaration of results of WBJEE, an entrance exam for undergraduate engineering, technology, architecture, and pharmacy courses in West Bengal's State-run and State-aided universities, have been inordinately delayed this year since it was conducted on April 27 this year. 'The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board shall recast the merit list and publish a fresh panel, providing 7% reservation for the 66 classes of O.B.C. candidates as recognised by the West Bengal Backward Classes Department prior to 2010,' a single judge bench of Justice Kausik Chanda had said in its order on August 7. The court had also directed the government to complete the aforementioned exercise and release the revised merit list within a period of 15 days from the date of the order, that is by August 22. The division bench of Justices Sujoy Paul and Smita Das De refused to interfere in the order passed by Justice Chanda on Thursday. Meanwhile, the WBJEE Board issued a circular on August 18 directing candidates to mention their caste/tribe/community names and upload their Scheduled Caste, Schedule Tribes and OBC certificates on the official website. The window to do so closed on Thursday. The delay in WBJEE results led to protests in political circles, with the Leader of Opposition of the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari warning on August 18 that Bharatiya Janata Party legislators will hold dharnas outside the Education Department headquarters if the results are not published by this week. 'We want the results to be out as soon as possible. We also believe that authorities have not given this issue enough importance. The only thing of consequence which has happened after prolonged legal battles is the delay in our results, which has caused considerable anxiety in us,' 17-year-old engineering aspirant Shithan Roy told The Hindu. He added that many who are waiting for the results are struggling mentally due to the uncertainty. 'We feel unheard and uncared for,' Mr. Roy said.

Address concerns of farmers, workers on priority, demands CPI(M)
The CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh State Committee has urged the Central and State governments to act immediately to address the hardships being faced by the farmers, workers, and citizens in the wake of floods, soaring power tariffs, and privatisation. Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Thursday, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao, along with Central Committee member K. Lokanatham and State Secretariat member K. Prabhakara Reddy, outlined the resolutions passed at the State Secretariat meeting. Polit Bureau members B.V. Raghavulu and U. Vasuki participated. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the party demanded ₹10,000 per acre compensation for crop losses in the Godavari region, urgent repairs to the tanks, canals, and roads, and a farmer-friendly crop insurance scheme fully funded by the Central and State governments. He said the party opposed land allocation to the LuLu Group malls in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, calling it harmful to small retailers, and urged use of lands for public and RTC development. He condemned the alleged forcible installation of smart meters and an additional ₹12,000 crore tariff burden. He said the party would observe August 28 as 'Pratijna Dinam' to commemorate the Basheerbagh firing incident. Mr. Srinivasa Rao appealed to the political parties to back the INDIA bloc's Vice-Presidential nominee Justice Sudarshan Reddy, and criticised the YSRCP, TDP, and JSP for siding with the BJP-led NDA on the issue. He further said that the party opposed the alleged privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and forced land acquisitions, and demanded priority to tribal rights and Polavaram oustees' rehabilitation.
