Italian Republic Day: Message from Fabrizio Bielli, Consul of Italy in Karachi

It gives me great pleasure to address our distinguished readers and friends of Italy at my first Italian National Day celebration in Pakistan.
Italy and Pakistan have a strong economic and commercial tie, which are evident, through various initiatives that even the Consulate undertakes to further strengthen the relations between the two friendly countries.
This year, to celebrate the Italian National Day, we have invited Chef Vincenzo de Liso from Italy, who will be hosting us in Karachi on the 5th June with a specially curated Italian menu, that for sure all the guests will enjoy. This is the second visit of the Chef to Karachi, after last year's success, he is keen to explore more opportunities in Pakistan with Italy in the 'HORECA' sector. Hence, I decided to go ahead and focalize commercial opportunities in this sector together with the Chef, to bring more of Italian culinary heritage, gastronomical excellence of Made in Italy to the people of Karachi.
On the commercial front, Italy sees the latter as an important trading partner. Hence, during April 2025, we saw for the first time the Italian pavilion with direct participation of Italian companies at IGATEX 2025 in the textile sector with a presence of over 45 companies. During my tenure in Karachi, I would like to focalize with relevant stakeholders in the economic and commercial sphere, to develop and enhance the numbers of the existing trade statistics with Pakistan. At the end of June, we will have a visit of the Italian naval ship to Karachi, "Antonio Marceglia", within six months from the last visit of the iconic Amerigo Vespucci, which shows Italy's commitment towards strong naval ties with Pakistan besides other ongoing commercial engagements.
To sum up, Italy and Pakistan enjoy excellent bilateral relations and look forward to enhance the existing ones hopefully, in many fields in the years to come. The Consulate of Italy in Karachi is eager to develop cooperation and to facilitate and welcome all Pakistani and Italian engagements to promote friendship, economic engagement and joint prosperity for our Countries!

Inzaghi to coach Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal

Former Inter boss Simone Inzaghi was revealed as the new coach of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal on Thursday, days before they take part in the new-look Club World Cup. The Italian, who led Inter to a heavy defeat in Saturday's Champions League final, had earlier played down rumours of a two-year deal worth 50 million euros. "I am Simone Inzaghi and today begins my story with Al Hilal," he said in a slickly produced video posted on X, in which he sips Arabian coffee and pins an Al Hilal lapel badge on his suit. Inzaghi, 49, becomes just the latest high-profile footballing acquisition for oil-rich Saudi Arabia, which will host the World Cup in 2034. "The Italian genius is here," Al Hilal posted. "Welcome, Simone Inzaghi." Inzaghi joins the likes of Ruben Neves and Aleksandar Mitrovic at Al Hilal, which let injury-hit Neymar go in January after just seven appearances since his arrival in August 2023. A source with knowledge of the negotiations last week told AFP that the "first option" for Cristiano Ronaldo, who has signalled he is leaving rival club Al Nassr, could be a move to Al Hilal. Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes this week said he rejected Al Hilal's reported $135 million offer because he wanted to "continue to play at the highest level". Inzaghi's Inter slumped 5-0 to Qatar-funded Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday's Champions League final. His departure was confirmed on Tuesday. The former forward guided Inter to one Serie A title and two Italian Cups since joining in 2021. He took them to two Champions League finals in three seasons but lost both. On track to repeat the treble heroics of 2010 just a few weeks ago, Inter ended the season trophyless after falling away in each competition. Inter, PSG, Real Madrid and Manchester City are also among the 32 teams at the expanded Club World Cup, which starts on June 15.

JPMorgan wins UK court order to block VTB's $156 million Russian lawsuits

LONDON: JPMorgan Chase on Thursday won its bid to block Russia's VTB Bank suing it in Russia over nearly $156 million, in the latest case brought at London's High Court to try and stop Russian litigation. The U.S. lender took legal action in London last year after VTB sued it in Russia, seeking $155.8 million after VTB was hit by Western sanctions after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which prompted JPMorgan to freeze VTB funds in various accounts. JPMorgan argued that VTB's Russian lawsuits were in breach of their previous agreement to settle any disputes through arbitration and applied for an anti-suit injunction in London, to prevent VTB pursuing its case in Russia. Judge David Foxton ruled in JPMorgan's favour on Thursday, saying in a written ruling that VTB's pursuit of its lawsuits in Russia was 'vexatious and oppressive'. JPMorgan says interest income could rise this year even as uncertainty persists JPMorgan declined to comment. VTB Bank had no immediate comment. The dispute in London is just one strand of JPMorgan and VTB's legal battle, which has also prompted litigation in New York. JPMorgan is the latest financial institution to turn to courts in the West to try and stop litigation brought in Russia. In February, UniCredit won a bid to overturn an anti-suit injunction the Italian bank had obtained against a subsidiary of Russian energy giant Gazprom, citing a potential 250 million euro fine it faced in Russia.
