Italian Republic Day: Message from Fabrizio Bielli, Consul of Italy in Karachi

It gives me great pleasure to address our distinguished readers and friends of Italy at my first Italian National Day celebration in Pakistan.
Italy and Pakistan have a strong economic and commercial tie, which are evident, through various initiatives that even the Consulate undertakes to further strengthen the relations between the two friendly countries.
This year, to celebrate the Italian National Day, we have invited Chef Vincenzo de Liso from Italy, who will be hosting us in Karachi on the 5th June with a specially curated Italian menu, that for sure all the guests will enjoy. This is the second visit of the Chef to Karachi, after last year's success, he is keen to explore more opportunities in Pakistan with Italy in the 'HORECA' sector. Hence, I decided to go ahead and focalize commercial opportunities in this sector together with the Chef, to bring more of Italian culinary heritage, gastronomical excellence of Made in Italy to the people of Karachi.
On the commercial front, Italy sees the latter as an important trading partner. Hence, during April 2025, we saw for the first time the Italian pavilion with direct participation of Italian companies at IGATEX 2025 in the textile sector with a presence of over 45 companies. During my tenure in Karachi, I would like to focalize with relevant stakeholders in the economic and commercial sphere, to develop and enhance the numbers of the existing trade statistics with Pakistan. At the end of June, we will have a visit of the Italian naval ship to Karachi, "Antonio Marceglia", within six months from the last visit of the iconic Amerigo Vespucci, which shows Italy's commitment towards strong naval ties with Pakistan besides other ongoing commercial engagements.
To sum up, Italy and Pakistan enjoy excellent bilateral relations and look forward to enhance the existing ones hopefully, in many fields in the years to come. The Consulate of Italy in Karachi is eager to develop cooperation and to facilitate and welcome all Pakistani and Italian engagements to promote friendship, economic engagement and joint prosperity for our Countries!

European stocks end at over one-week low

FRANKFURT: European shares closed at a more than one-week low on Thursday, as investors were disappointed by a series of corporate reports from the likes of Sanofi and Ferrari, while beverage makers slid as they were faced with a 15% US tariff. Earnings were in full swing in Europe this week as traders gauged the impact US tariffs were likely to have on corporate performance for the rest of the year. The pan-European STOXX 600 index finished 0.75% lower, with Italian stocks underperforming the most in major markets with a 1.5% decline. Italian luxury carmaker Ferrari slid 11.7% - marking its biggest one-day drop since its listing nine years ago. The stock also weighed on the broader STOXX automobile sector which was down nearly 4%. The sports-car maker maintained its annual forecasts and said that it will reduce the price compensation it introduced earlier on some cars sold in the US, once the US-EU trade deal was effective. However, analysts mulled if the company can sustain its high profitability. Drugmaker Sanofi also dropped 7.8% after reporting lower-than-expected earnings, but said that the impact from US tariffs could be manageable. 'When we think about sectors like automotives, pharma and consumer discretionary names — the risk is these sectors are particularly vulnerable to US tariffs,' said Craig Cameron, portfolio manager and research analyst at Templeton Global Investments. 'So we're consciously deciding to lean away from them and focus more on utilities, industrials, and financials that are largely domestically driven and insulated from tariffs.'

India's equity benchmarks little changed ahead of Fed decision; tariff worries linger

India's equity benchmarks ended little changed on Wednesday as gains in Larsen & Toubro after upbeat earnings offset investor caution ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy decision and a looming U.S. tariff deadline. The Nifty 50 rose 0.14% to 24,855.05 points and the BSE Sensex gained 0.18% to 81,481.86. Nine of the 16 major sectors advanced. Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro climbed about 5%, and was the biggest percentage gainer on Nifty 50, after its 30% jump in first-quarter profit came above estimates. 'U.S. tariffs and earnings visibility for second half of fiscal 2026 are the key factors currently. Until clarity emerges on these two, the market is unlikely to swing sharply in either direction,' said Arun Malhotra, fund manager at CapGrow Capital. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that a trade deal with India was yet to be finalised and warned of possible higher tariffs ahead of an August 1 deadline to seal an agreement. Investors are also waiting for Fed's policy decision later today. The U.S. central bank is expected to hold rates but the focus will be on Chair Jerome Powell's comments on the economic and inflation outlook amid a prolonged wait for rate cuts. Indian equity benchmarks set for muted open ahead of Fed policy decision Higher U.S. interest rates make emerging market equities such as India less attractive for foreign investors, who have been on a selling spree in India this month. The broader mid-caps and small-caps fell 0.1% and 0.5%, respectively. Among individual stocks, Tata Motors fell 3.5% as news reports of its plans to buy Italian truck maker Iveco for $4.5 billion raised concerns over a potential strain to its balance sheet. GNG Electronics made a stellar debut on exchanges, with shares jumping 40.7%. Workplace solutions provider Indiqube Spaces closed 8% lower in its first trading session.
