CM Revanth launches Rythu Bharosa

Hans India4 hours ago

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, while underscoring his government's genuine farmer-friendly programmes, launched the Rythu Bharosa scheme on Monday, allocating Rs 9,000 crore to benefit approximately 72 lakh farmers for the Kharif season. During the launch event at Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agriculture University, he criticized the Bharat Rashtra Samithi for targeting the mere 18-month-old Congress government while ignoring the damage done to the state over the past 10 years under the BRS rule.
Revanth Reddy emphasized that without the support of farmers, no one can hold positions --be it village sarpanch, MPTC member, ZPTC member, MLA, MP, or Chief Minister.
He highlighted that the Congress-led Telangana government, unlike any other state in the country, had spent about Rs 1 lakh crore on various farmer welfare schemes, including farm loan waivers and the MSP (Minimum Support Price) for procurement of farm produce, within just 18 months.
The Chief Minister slammed the BRS, stating that those who had been in power for ten years, did nothing but had the cheek to criticize the state government. He pointed out that the BRS misled the public by claiming the state had only Rs 4.5 lakh crore debt burden. When the Congress assumed office, the state's debt stood at Rs 8 lakh crore, pushing it into a debt trap. 'The destruction they caused in ten years is irreversible, even over a hundred years, leaving the state economy in shambles,' he added.
The Chief Minister noted that the BRS had built flashy structures to portray an image of wealth but left behind a trail of economic devastation. This has created significant challenges for the state government, including clearing fee reimbursements for students, disbursing retirement benefits to government employees, and addressing farmers' welfare issues.
In contrast, the Congress government aimed to transform the state into a one-trillion economy and recognized the importance of agriculture, he underscored. The state government planned to double farmers' incomes and alleviate the distress caused during the erstwhile BRS regime. He noted that the state government successfully implemented the farm loan waiver all at once, unlike any other government. Additionally, it had introduced the MSP, a Rs 500 bonus for superfine rice, crop insurance, and the Rythu Bharosa scheme.
Farmers had shown trust in the government, as 60 per cent of the total 2.5 crore metric tons of rice cultivated was superfine variety rice, he stated. Telangana had become the leading state in superfine rice production and was also the only state providing this rice to the poor through the Public Distribution System (PDS), he said.
The Chief Minister asserted that the state government was systematically addressing shortcomings to steer the state back onto a path of development. 'At every step, we encounter challenges. However, we are making necessary corrections to guide the state towards progress,' he said.
Revanth Reddy assured farmers that despite the difficulties the state faced, the government would stand with them and launch the Rs 9,000 crore disbursal of Rythu Bharosa in the next nine days. Revanth observed that, apart from him, Ministers, MLAs, and others were actively engaging with the people and working for the state, instead of 'isolating themselves in farmhouses' (alluding to former chief minister K Chandrasekar Rao). He urged everyone to communicate the government's farmer welfare initiatives to the villages.
'We have created an environment where farmers can live with dignity instead of resorting to suicide. Meanwhile, the opposition celebrates the deaths of farmers and students, seeking to gain political power from their misfortunes,' he said.
He requested patience from those who ruled the state for ten years, allowing the government time to fulfill its promises.
Revanth Reddy remarked that during the BRS regime, even husbands and wives could not talk freely on the phone for fear of being tapped. However, under the Congress government, people enjoyed freedom, including the ability to criticize the government without fear. The Chief Minister challenged anyone to show another state government in the country, other than Telangana, that had filled 60,000 jobs in a year. Revanth Reddy expressed his view that he and his Cabinet colleagues had achieved enough in life and were now focused on providing a brighter future for the next generation. 'We must shape the futures of the youth and students of the state,' he observed.
Emphasizing the need for crop diversification and the cultivation of commercial crops, he instructed the chief secretary and officials of the energy department to raise awareness among farmers about installing solar-powered pump sets. He emphasized that all a farmer wanted was to live with dignity and self-respect while cultivating and living in their village. He assured that the people's government would stand by them, adding that no matter how many protests and rallies the opposition staged, the next ten years will be crucial for progress in the state.
Earlier, he interacted with farmers witnessing the launch of the scheme via video conferencing at over 1,000 Rythu Vedikas across the state. Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, and Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy also spoke on the welfare measures.

Bengal Kaliganj bypoll: Identity politics, Murshidabad riot takes center stage

The Kaliganj assembly bypoll in West Bengal's Nadia district is shaping up to be a triangular contest among the TMC, BJP, and Congress-Left alliance, with identity politics, post-Murshidabad riot anxieties and a nationalist surge after Operation Sindoor set to dominate the electoral discourse. This is the first election in West Bengal since Operation Sindoor, India's military action launched on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam attack, involving targeted air and ground strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation has added a national security layer to the electoral narrative, particularly in the BJP's campaign in the minority-dominated seat. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed earlier this year. Voting will take place on June 19, and counting will be held on June 23. The ruling TMC has fielded his daughter Alifa Ahmed, a 38-year-old BTech graduate and corporate professional, as its candidate. 'Many people, including colleagues, asked me why I left a successful corporate career to join politics. But after my father's death, the responsibility of fulfilling his unfulfilled dreams fell on me. With the blessings of our party leader Mamata Banerjee and in response to the call of the people of Kaliganj, I have stepped into this role,' Alifa said after filing her nomination. The BJP has nominated Ashis Ghosh, a local panchayat member and former mandal president. 'Ghosh is a loyal and dedicated party worker, who will play an important role in fighting against the misrule of the TMC in the area,' asserted BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar. Kabil Uddin Sheikh has been named the Congress candidate, with backing from the CPI(M)-led Left Front, following a series of discussions. Despite initial claims from the CPI(M) that it would contest due to its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha and 2023 panchayat elections, the RSP – a key Left ally with a historical claim to the seat – agreed to back the Congress for the sake of alliance unity. 'We fought well in Kaliganj during the panchayat and Lok Sabha elections. In 2016, the Congress won the seat as part of the Left alliance. If we field a joint candidate now, we can defeat both TMC and BJP,' CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim said. Kaliganj has a Muslim voter population of around 54 per cent, along with SCs (14.43 per cent) and STs (0.42 per cent). It is predominantly rural, with 90.67 per cent rural and 9.33 per cent urban population, as per the 2011 Census. The bypoll is also being closely watched due to the recent Murshidabad riots in which three persons were killed and several people rendered homeless, discontent over the SSC recruitment scam, and the changing electoral arithmetic since the 2024 general elections. In Kaliganj, identity and legacy remain central to the electoral battle. While the TMC has accused the BJP of communal polarisation, the Murshidabad riots and sporadic communal skirmishes in parts of the state have only added fuel to the saffron party's campaign in its bid to break the Trinamool Congress stronghold on this minority-dominated seat. 'The BJP thrives on dividing communities, but Kaliganj stands united. People here have rejected communal hatred time and again, and they will do so once more,' Alifa Ahmed said. The BJP, meanwhile, has declared the contest as a fight against corruption and appeasement. 'The TMC is playing appeasement politics in the name of minority welfare. We want equal development for all without vote bank politics,' said Majumdar. Since the 2021 assembly elections, the opposition BJP has tasted defeat in every bypoll held in West Bengal. 'This election is not about Hindu or Muslim. It's about good governance, something the TMC has failed to deliver. The people of Kaliganj will give a befitting reply to the party for its misrule and corruption,' added Ghosh. Once a Congress stronghold, the seat has swung across party lines – with the RSP winning four times during the Left Front era, Congress victories in 1987, 1991, and 1996, a TMC win in 2011, and a Congress-Left win in 2016. The Congress MLA later defected to the TMC. The TMC reclaimed the seat in 2021 with over 54 per cent of the votes, against BJP's 31 per cent and Congress' 12 per cent. Political scientist Maidul Islam told PTI that both the TMC and the BJP are likely to rely heavily on identity politics in the upcoming bypoll. "After the Murshidabad riots, both parties will make identity politics a key part of their campaign. Following Operation Sindoor, the BJP will also try to tap into nationalist sentiments, while the TMC will highlight its support for the government, but raise questions about the Centre's failure in preventing the Pahalgam terror attack," he said. To ensure peaceful polling, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal, has announced the deployment of 20 companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF). The results of the bypoll is expected to offer key insights into the evolving political trends ahead of the 2026 assembly elections in the state.

Woman tied to tree, thrashed over unpaid loan in Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu's constituency; moneylender arrested

TIRUPATI: A 25-year-old woman was tied up to a tree by a moneylender after her husband failed to repay a loan of Rs 80000. This inhumane incident was reported at Narayanapuram village in Kuppam assembly constituency represented by Nara Chandrababu Naidu in Chittoor district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The victim was identified as Sirisha, who works as a daily wage labourer at Narayanapuram. Her husband Thimmarayappa had borrowed a sum of Rs 80000 from a local moneylender Muni Kannappa about three years ago. Thimmarayappa couldn't repay the borrowed money with interest on time and when Muni Kannappa pressurised him to repay his loan, Thimmarayappa abandoned his family and fled away from the village. After Thimmarayappa fled away, the moneylender began harassing his wife to repay the loan and he often used to hurl abuses at her whenever he found her in the streets. Not stopping with the abuses, in a bid to exert more pressure on Sirisha, Muni Kannappa once again entered into a heated altercation with her on Monday, dragged her in full public glare and tied her up to a tree at Narayanapuram village, in an extreme act of humiliation. The deafening cries of Sirisha's two minor children also did not deter Muni Kannappa from his demeaning act of tying up a helpless woman to a tree in a bid to force her to repay his loan. When local tried to film and photograph Muni Kannappa's inhumane act, he tried to attack them as well. Kuppam police, who learnt about the incident, rushed to Narayanapuram village and rescued Sirisha from the moneylender's clutches. After reports of the incident went viral on various social media platforms on Tuesday, chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu expressed anguish over the barbaric act of the moneylender and directed the Chittoor district police administration to immediately arrest him and initiate legal proceedings against him. Chittoor police informed the CM that they had already arrested Muni Kannappa and have booked a case against him under various sections of the BNS Act.
