PM has energy for foreign tours, but no empathy to visit Manipur: Congress
Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his three-nation tour, the Congress on Sunday said he has all the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm -- '3 Es' -- for such visits and asked can he not summon up a 4th E -- empathy -- for going to Manipur "where the people's suffering continues unabated".
The opposition party also said this is Modi's 35th trip abroad since May 2023 and it was "pathetic of the PM to treat Manipur in this awful manner".
"The Prime Minister leaves for Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia this morning. There was a time when he boasted about his knowledge of algebra by spouting the (a+b)^2 equation as applicable to India and Canada. But things went horribly wrong thereafter," Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.
"When it appeared that Canada was dragging its feet on the invite to India, Mr. Modi's drum beaters proclaimed that he would not go even if invited.But like always, he stands exposed," Ramesh claimed.
The Canadian prime minister has said that India has been invited to the G7 Summit along with a number of other non-G7 countries because India is the fifth largest economy in the world, Ramesh pointed out.
"Perhaps Mr. Modi can remind him that according to the Niti Aayog CEO, India became the world's third largest economy on May 24, 2025," the Congress leader said.
The Congress leader also shared a video clip of the PM from 2015 in which he is heard giving a mathematical analogy to demonstrate the relationship between the two countries.
Ramesh said, "This is Mr. Modi's 35th trip abroad since May 2023. He has all the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm--the 3 Es-- for such visits. But can he not summon up a 4th E--empathy-- for going to Manipur where the people's distress, agony and suffering continues unabated?" "He has met with NOBODY from the state, let alone political leaders, since May 3, 2023. Pathetic of the PM to treat Manipur in this awful manner," he added.
The Congress has been attacking the prime minister for not visiting Manipur besides slamming the Centre for its handling of the situation in the ethnic strife-torn northeastern state.
More than 220 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.
The Congress last week had accused Prime Minister Modi of "insensitivity" to the suffering of people in the state.
Ramesh had said the suffering of the people of Manipur is not only of the state and the northeastern region but of the entire country.
The Centre had on February 13 imposed President's rule in the northeastern state after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The state assembly, which had a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.
Prime Minister Modi on Sunday morning embarked on a three-nation tour during which he will take part in the G7 Summit in Canada, and visit Cyprus and Croatia to shore up India's bilateral cooperation with these two countries.
Modi will first be in Cyprus at the invitation of the country's president, Nikos Christodoulides.
In the second leg of his visit, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Kananaskis in Canada on June 16-17 to participate in the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney.
In the final leg of his tour, Modi will undertake an official visit to Croatia on June 18 at the invitation of the prime minister of the European country, Andrej Plenkovic.

Vijayawada: Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has requested Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal to allocate ₹150 crore from the tobacco board to the state govt to manage the ongoing burley tobacco purchases. He said that the state govt is purchasing about 20 million kg of burley tobacco by spending nearly ₹300 crore as traders did not pick up the stocks leaving the growers into deep trouble. Union minister Goyal visited chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's residence in Undavalli on Sunday and held discussions on various issues. The chief minister explained that the state govt set up tobacco purchase centres at seven locations in Bapatla, Guntur, Palnadu, and Prakasam districts to avoid further delay causing distress among the farming community. "The state govt deployed state marketing agency-markfed to purchase burley tobacco from growers and it was expected to cost around Rs 300 crore. The state's burden would greatly come down if the Centre grants at least Rs 150 crore from the surplus revenues of the tobacco board," said Naidu. Chief minister urged Goyal to reconsider reducing the import duty on oil palm to 10%. He explained that reducing import duty is causing palm oil farmers in the state to receive unfair prices and suffer significant losses. Chief minister highlighted that the decision to reduce import duty could hinder the goals of the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO) set by the centre. He suggested the union minister to hold discussions with the US regarding the duties imposed on aqua exports. "The 27% duty imposed by the US on seafood is impacting eight lakh aqua farmers in Andhra Pradesh. The Centre should exert pressure on USA to reduce the burden to relieve aqua farmers," said Naidu. He had also urged Goyal to reduce GST on mango pulp from 12% to 5%. He said that the state govt had already brought the issue to the attention of the Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Uttarakhand chopper crash: Amit Shah, Aviation Minister, speaks to CM Dhami, assures support from Centre
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 15 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Sunday reached out to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to enquire about the tragic helicopter crash in Rudraprayag in which seven people were killed. The incident, which occurred at around 5:30 am earlier today, claimed the lives of seven people on board, including five adults, one infant and one crew member. According to a statement from the Uttarakhand Chief Minister's Office, the Union Ministers had a telephone conversation with Dhami during which they assured the Centre of full cooperation following the crash. 'Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu also inquired about the Kedarnath heli accident from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami over the phone and assured all possible cooperation from the Centre,' the statement read. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Uttarakhand CM Dhami in the wake of the tragic helicopter crash. According to an official statement from the Uttarakhand Chief Minister's office, CM Dhami informed the Prime Minister that a high-level meeting was held immediately after the incident and instructions were given to probe the incident. 'Prime Minister prayed for the strength to bear this loss to the families of the deceased. He assured all possible cooperation from the central government. The helicopter took off from Guptkashi at 05:10 am and landed at Shri Kedarnath Ji Helipad at 05:18 am before departing again at 05:19 am for Guptkashi and is reported to have crashed near Gaurikund between 05:30 am and 05:45 am, the statement said. The ministry said that preliminary indications suggest that the probable cause of the crash may be Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT), with the helicopter reportedly airborne despite poor visibility and extensive clouding at the valley entry area. The exact cause will be determined through a detailed investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). (ANI)
