Not to be dramatic, but the new 'Predator: Badlands' trailer just soft-launched the 'Alien' crossover I was secretly hoping for
Part of me still stands by that, but after seeing the new trailer, I can't help but really root for it now.
'Predator: Badlands' is one of my most anticipated releases of the year. The latest trailer is so epic I've watched it more than three times on my TV and even dragged my dad in front of the screen just so he could experience it too.
Like the first teaser, it's packed with 'Alien' references, only this time, there are even more thrown into the mix.
The trailer reveals an unexpected bond forming between Thia, Elle Fanning's upbeat android, and a lone Yautja warrior exiled from his people. Early on, we see what appears to be a version of Thia being rebooted, though it may not actually be her.
This android has different facial markings, which raises the possibility that Fanning is playing a second synthetic entirely (and it's been confirmed by Empire Magazine).
Created by Weyland-Yutani's bio-weapons division, Thia quickly proves she's more than capable of fighting. At one point, she's seen tearing through a monstrous enemy with ease.

But there's a catch. Thia is literally ripped in two. From that moment on, the Yautja carries her damaged body like a backpack as he continues his mission to hunt what's ominously described as 'a creature that can't be killed.'
There's plenty of action, too. Near the end, we get one of the most exciting moments yet. A towering mech stomps into frame clearly designed to take on one of the planet's massive predators.
It's a clear visual call-back to the iconic 'Aliens' power loader. Adding to the mystery, we also see what appears to be a Weyland outpost hidden deep in the terrain, swarming with armed androids.
It still feels very much like a 'Predator' movie. The young Yautja, Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), is clearly the main focus, with the story revolving around his treacherous quest to find the ultimate adversary. It's a refreshing take, and I genuinely can't wait.
'Alien' has always been my favorite franchise of all time, so naturally, seeing hints of it in 'Predator: Badlands' amps up my excitement for what's to come.
But I'm also a huge fan of 'Predator,' and after the success of 'Prey' and 'Killer of Killers,' my confidence in the upcoming movie is sky-high. These recent entries have shown the franchise can evolve and deliver fresh, exciting stories without losing what makes it special.
The new 'Predator: Badlands' trailer hooked me not just because of the action and Easter eggs, but because it hints at a deeper, richer story that respects the legacies of both franchises. Adding to the buzz, fans are already speculating about a possible Predator appearance in the upcoming 'Alien: Earth' series.
Notably, the term 'predatory' is used to describe the newly introduced alien species, which some viewers see as a subtle nod to the 'Predator' universe. A distinct clicking sound in the trailer has also been compared to the iconic noise made by Predators.
Knowing both universes are officially connected again (and hopefully stay canon this time) genuinely has me eager for what lies ahead. I just need November to hurry up now.

Alien: Earth is just around the corner, and fans of the Alien universe are about to dive into a terrifying new chapter that connects back to one of the biggest power players in the franchise… Weyland-Yutani. A new promo video just dropped, and it puts the spotlight on one of the series' most intriguing new characters, a corporate leader with a wild agenda that could shake up everything we thought we knew. Set years before the events of Alien , the upcoming FX series explores the early days of the corporate arms race that would shape the future of humanity. While Alien introduced Weyland-Yutani as the shadowy force pulling the strings from behind the scenes, Alien: Earth will widen the scope to show the company fighting for dominance against other hungry players like Lynch, Dynamic, Threshold, and Prodigy. Prodigy is led by the enigmatic and eccentric Boy Kavalier, played by Samuel Blenkin, and this video gives us a taste of what to expect form the character. In the teaser, Kavalier addresses the competition: 'I'd be lying if I said I wasn't aware of Weyland-Yutani. Everyone in this game is. But I don't emulate them. I don't envy them. I don't fear them. I think they're playing catch-up.' That's a bold claim in a universe where Weyland-Yutani has always played god with human lives, but Kavalier might have something to back it up. Prodigy's breakthrough is wild as they're transferring human consciousness into synthetics, essentially creating a new form of sentient life. A catastrophic crash near Prodigy City brings chaos and horror, as alien monsters are unleashed into the world. That's when we meet Wendy, played by Sydney Chandler, the first human-synthetic hybrid. She takes charge, leading other synthetics in a desperate hunt to eliminate the alien threat. But this wouldn't be an Alien story without a deadly twist — there's a Xenomorph in the mix, and it's not going down without taking a few heads with it. Kavalier's motives also remain murky. While Wendy and the others fight to survive, he seems more interested in capturing the alien than saving his creations. That obsession could spell doom for everyone involved. Alongside Blenkin and Chandler, Alien: Earth features a solid cast including Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, Alex Lawther as CJ, Lily Newmark as Nibs, and Essie Davis as Dame Silva. The series is created by Noah Hawley, with Ridley Scott producing. Alien: Earth premieres with its first two episodes on FX and Hulu on August 12.

LISTEN: How Noah Hawley and FX Brought ‘Alien: Earth' to Life; Kevin Feige Gets Candid as Comic Con Approaches
About eight years ago, multihyphenate Noah Hawley wrote a five-page pitch for FX on what he would do with the 'Alien' franchise if he ever got the chance to work in the world established in 1979 by Ridley Scott's seminal film. Next month, FX will unveil its wildly ambitious, first-ever TV series take on the sci-fi franchise that has spawned eight other films across the past five decades. On the latest episode of the 'Daily Variety' podcast, Daniel D'Addario, Variety's chief correspondent, offers insights into his inside look at the making of 'Alien: Earth' that is featured as 's July 23 cover story. That's a testament to the strength of the writer-producer's vision for adapting 'Alien' as a TV series for the present day. D'Addario notes that Hawley is a famously prolific 'idea machine' who has the trust of FX leadership. That's important given all that FX has riding on 'Alien: Earth,' which has topped the budget of FX's previous most expensive series. 'He's a novelist. He's written and directed feature films, and he just has the ability to work through this IP world without having it feel like a crass brand extension. It's 'Alien,' but it is fundamentally a Noah Hawley show as well,' D'Addario says. Also featured in today's episode is a conversation with Adam B. Vary, Variety's senior entertainment writer, about what to expect from San Diego Comic Con, which begins on July 24 and is always a mile-marker for studios and networks. Vary also discusses his recent sit down with Marvel chief Kevin Feige, who delivered a candid assessment of the studio's recent struggles. Feige cited a startling statistic that illustrated how Marvel simply became overextended in recent years as it ramped up production to feed series and movies to Disney+, which has been an enormous priority for parent company Disney. From 2008 to 2019, Marvel produced about 50 total hours worth of film and TV content. In the last six years, Marvel has produced more than 120 hours. 'That massive increase in volume really diluted the brand, diluted their quality. At one point he said, for the first time, quantity trumped quality.' And, that's a pretty blunt assessment for what went wrong,' Vary says. As for Comic Con, Vary predicts it will be less of a launchpad than in the past as Marvel is not hosting its usual state-of-the-industry presentation (hence Feige's charm offensive with journalists), nor does DC Studios have a big presence this year. 'It's generally going to be a little bit of a quieter Comic Con,' Vary says.
