Inaugural National AI Conference Kicks off in Rabat
Organized by the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform under the theme "An efficient and ethical AI strategy to serve our society," the conference aims to outline a national strategy for sovereign AI, one that is tailored to the needs of the population and strategic sectors, and aligned with the High Royal Guidelines.
Over two days, this landmark national gathering involves representatives from various ministries and public institutions, the private sector, investment and sovereign funds, Moroccan startups, as well as international figures from academia, civil society, and the Moroccan diaspora.
The conference is structured around 13 thematic areas where AI is expected to have the most transformative impact for Morocco. These include administrative reform and modernization, education and new learning methods, sports, healthcare and precision medicine, smart agriculture, and fisheries production.
Other key themes include Industry X.0, security and sovereignty, culture and creativity, media and democracy, international cooperation, governance, trust and ethics, innovation and startups, as well as infrastructure and investment.
The first day of the conference focuses on sector-specific technical sessions and demonstrations by innovative AI-driven startups, while the second addresses the political dimensions and international cooperation related to AI.
The closing ceremony will provide a platform to present the key recommendations emerging from the two days of discussions and to formalize several memorandums of understanding with both national and international organizations.

«For Moroccans around the world, Africa Morocco Link (AML) is much more than just a crossing, it's the first step toward their homeland. The moment they board our ships, they're already in Morocco, welcomed with the warmth and hospitality our country is known for», proudly states Rachid Houari, General Director of the Moroccan maritime company. As part of the Marhaba 2025 operation, AML aims to reinforce this promise of hospitality by expanding its services to accommodate the massive wave of travel between Spain and Morocco. The company is planning 9,000 crossings, up from 8,000 in 2024, marking a 12.5% increase. In total, it expects to transport 1.2 million passengers, 250,000 vehicles, and 140,000 freight units across its two main routes: Tanger Med – Algeciras (approx. 1h30 crossing time) Tanger Ville – Tarifa (approx. 50-minute crossing) With an average of 28 daily departures and up to 36 during peak periods in late July and August, AML will cover nearly 30% of the total transport capacity across the Strait of Gibraltar. A Reinforced Fleet for the Summer To handle this summer's expected traffic, AML will mobilize a fleet of seven ships, including: Four mixed car-ferries (for passengers, vehicles, and trucks): - Stena Europe: 1,250 passengers, 300 vehicles, 62 trucks - Morocco Sun: 1,000 passengers, 200 cars, 40 trucks - AF Claudia: 900 passengers, 250 vehicles, 70 trucks - Morocco Star: 930 passengers, 200 vehicles, 45 trucks Two fast ferries (for passengers and cars only), serving the Tanger Ville–Tarifa route: - Morocco Express 1: 640 passengers, 50 vehicles - Maria Dolores: 600 passengers, 50 vehicles One freight ship: - Kaunas, dedicated to semi-trailers and operating in partnership with other companies (AML will handle two-thirds of the rotations). All ships will offer halal catering services. According to Commercial Director Abdelaali Essamghouni, efforts have been made to maintain high standards of comfort while preserving a distinctly Moroccan atmosphere on board. Human and Logistical Mobilization To meet customer expectations, AML will deploy nearly 500 staff throughout the Marhaba operation: reception agents, information officers, and boarding/disembarkation assistance teams. This includes tailored pricing, optimized boarding, and onboard services that meet top international standards», he noted. AML, a Strategic National Player Africa Morocco Link, which is 57% owned by the Compagnie de Transport au Maroc (CTM) and 43% by Swedish group Stena Line, remains the only national maritime company currently operating on the Strait of Gibraltar. Hakim Ziyech Faces $720,000 Tax Debt in Turkiye After Leaving Galatasaray
Rabat – Moroccan footballer Hakim Ziyech is facing a significant tax debt in Turkiye after ending his time with Galatasaray. Turkish outlet Milliyet reported that, according to a public notice issued by Turkish authorities on June 28, Ziyech owes approximately $720,000 in unpaid taxes. The debt includes $644,000 in main tax and about $76,000 in late payment penalties, all linked to his time playing for the Istanbul-based club. Ziyech left Galatasaray during the winter transfer window for the 2023–2024 season. The Istanbul Tax Office tried to deliver the official notice directly to Ziyech, but he was not found at his registered address, added the report. Because of this, the authorities published the notice online and in four national newspapers. If Ziyech does not respond within one month, the notice will be considered officially delivered under Turkish law. Milliyet reported that Galatasaray officials explained that Ziyech had signed a contract based on a 'net salary' agreement, meaning the club was responsible for paying his taxes. As a result, Galatasaray Sportif AŞ, the club's corporate branch, is expected to cover the full amount. Ziyech, who previously played for Chelsea, had a difficult spell at Galatasaray due to injuries and limited appearances. Though he has moved on from the Turkish league, the financial matters from his time in Istanbul continue to follow him.

Morocco embraces AI for national sovereignty and development at first National AI Conference
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into national strategies is essential for sovereignty, said Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Deputy Minister in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, on Tuesday in Salé. Speaking at the opening of Morocco's first National AI Conference, she stressed the urgent need for both institutional and collective awareness that AI is not a future concept, it is a present-day reality. This reality, she explained, is already reshaping key sectors such as social protection, education, health, finance, and urban planning, redefining long-held principles of equity, efficiency, reliability, and sovereignty. As such, she urged that AI should not be seen as a secondary technical tool, but as a core institutional responsibility that requires rethinking how the public sector operates and rebuilding systems of trust between citizens and the state. The minister also emphasized the dual responsibility brought on by the rapid evolution of AI. On one hand, it is vital to avoid clinging to outdated administrative models; on the other, the country must remain agile and ready to redirect national strategies, such as the Digital Morocco 2030 plan, toward full AI integration. Seghrouchni pointed out a key paradox of AI: its ability to either reinforce inequalities or help reduce them. The goal, she said, is to harness AI as a force for social justice and equitable access to opportunities and resources. Highlighting Morocco's African depth, she asserted that AI is not just a global tech race, but also a question of symbolic and material sovereignty, an arena where global power balances are being redefined. She concluded by calling for a sovereign approach to AI, managed «at the level of a nation with a true will for reform and the courage to lead», so that artificial intelligence becomes a genuine driver of development.
