Third batch LMS acquisition to be finalised after 13MP tabling
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin clarified this amid speculation following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent discussions in Italy.
Mohamed Khaled stated that all new defence procurements, including the LMS, will be confirmed post-13MP. He highlighted that during Anwar's visits to Italy and France, potential credit facilities were discussed should Malaysia proceed with procurement involving assets from these nations.
On July 2, Anwar met with leaders of Italian defence firms Fincantieri, Leonardo, and ENI, resulting in potential RM8.13 billion investments. The discussions also covered bilateral cooperation in defence and energy sectors.
In June last year, the Defence Ministry awarded a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) to Turkish firm Savunma Teknolojileri Muhendislik (STM) for three second-batch LMS vessels. These Ada-class corvettes are multirole, capable of patrols and anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and equipped with ATMACA missiles and air defence systems. Each vessel supports 111 crew members and includes a helipad for ASW helicopters or drones.
Malaysia previously acquired four first-batch LMS vessels from China for over RM1 billion, which have been operational since 2020. - Bernama

No conflict of interest in MACC's role as NACS secretariat, says PM
KUALA LUMPUR: There is no conflict of interest in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) serving as the secretariat for the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS), Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says. The Prime Minister stressed that MACC's monitoring role does not compromise the impartiality of the initiative, which requires collective commitment from all relevant agencies in combating corruption across the country. 'NACS is a national initiative that involves multiple stakeholders and demands the shared responsibility of every agency. 'The role played by MACC does not give rise to any issues of conflict of interest,' he said in a written parliamentary reply on Tuesday (Aug 5). Anwar was responding to a question from William Leong Jee Keen (PH-Selayang), who asked whether the government intended to separate MACC's role as secretariat from NACS, citing potential concerns over impartiality, given the agency's dual function as both implementer and evaluator. While affirming the current arrangement, Anwar said the government remained open to proposals for improvement in line with its institutional reform agenda. 'The government is always open to any recommendations that can enhance the system, in line with the spirit and aspiration of institutional reform. 'Any such proposals will be examined in detail with all relevant stakeholders,' he said. Launched by the Prime Minister on May 7, 2024, NACS focuses on the people's well-being and is anchored on five key strategies - education, public accountability, people's voice, enforcement and incentives - supported by a total of 60 sub-strategies. Each sub-strategy is led by designated agencies, including the MACC, which is tasked with discussing, assisting and coordinating the implementation of these efforts through the twice-yearly Performance Coordination Meetings chaired by the MACC Chief Commissioner. The outcomes of NACS are also presented periodically at the Cabinet Committee on National Governance, chaired by the Prime Minister himself.

KUCHING (Aug 6): Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn has voiced his disagreement with former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's proposal for students to complete secondary school by the age of 16 to enable them to enter the workforce by 21. Speaking at a press conference after officiating the 8th Technology & Innovation International Conference (Techon) 2025 at a hotel here today, Sagah said the proposal was unnecessary and that the focus should instead be on lifelong learning. 'There's no need for that. We are promoting lifelong learning, not stopping at 16. Why should it be 16 years old? No need to talk about that — just talk about lifelong learning,' he said when asked to comment on Rafizi's remarks during the recent debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Sagah pointed out that continuous upskilling and learning were more relevant in today's rapidly evolving industries. 'We encourage people to go and learn to upskill themselves. If last time I knew how to do rubber tapping, now I have to know how to manufacture the machine that can make it even faster, so that I don't need to go and get my hands dirty anymore,' he said. 'They (Rafizi) can say whatever they like,' he added. Rafizi had suggested during the 13MP debate in Parliament that the government consider structural reforms to the education system, allowing students to finish school earlier and join the workforce by 21, citing the need to manage challenges posed by an ageing population. On the event, Sagah said events such as Techon 2025 are vital platforms for bringing together experts from various disciplines to discuss the ethical and responsible use of technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), and to align innovation with sustainability goals. He added that the conference, themed 'AI, TVET, and Renewable Energy: Driving a Sustainable Future through the Sustainable Development Goals', was organised by Politeknik Mukah with support from various agencies and associations. 'It is an international event involving institutions from Indonesia, Japan, Morocco, and India, as well as local institutions like Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).
