USA Today18 hours ago
We will preview every player on the Cardinals roster leading up to training camp. This is about RB Trey Benson.
The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.
Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook.
This focuses on running back Trey Benson.
Trey Benson background, 2024 season
Benson was drafted by the Cardinals in the third round last year out of Florida State. He started his NFL career slowly but saw his role increase. He played in 13 games, missing the final four with an ankle injury. He played 137 total offensive snaps and rushed for 291 yards and a touchdown on 4.6 yards per attempt. He also caught six passes for 59 yards.
Tre Benson 2025 contract details, cap hit
Benson enters the second year of his four-year rookie deal worth $6.06 million. He will earn $1.07 million in salary and will count $1.38 million against the salary cap.
Questions he faces and roster outlook
As he enters Year 2 in the NFL, the biggest questions are about what sort of improvement he makes. Can he stay healthy for a full season after missing the final four games with the ankle injury? Is he ready to assume a larger role on offense? James Conner will be the clear starter, but can Benson see more playing time? He believes he and Conner can combine to be two RB1s together.
As for the roster, he is all but a lock for the roster and is expected to be the primary backup back to Conner in 2025.

Arizona Cardinals land 2 of own players in building-from-scratch NFL player draft

A look at the seven players the Cardinals land in this hypothetical current-player mock draft to starter a team over. If every team were to start their rosters over and every player were to enter some sort of reorganizational draft, what would happen, assuming the teams would want to win now? Well, Chad Reuter put together a hypothetical seven-round draft where teams would build their team from scratch and the order would be the order of the 2025 NFL draft, but then reversing order every round. The Cardinals picked in the middle of the rounds, so let's see who they would land. NFL building-from-scratch player draft: Arizona Cardinals Analysis This group would be a good start to a team, and they get a couple of current Cardinals in Baker and Campbell. Of course, it ignores a pair of premium positions at tackle and cornerback. In Round 1, they take Lawrence over quarterbacks C.J. Stroud and Aaron Rodgers. Kyler Murray is selected one pick before, going to the Atlanta Falcons. Offensive tackle Penei Sewell and interior defensive lineman Jalen Carter are drafted soon after Aidan Hutchinson, but considering his impact and motor, he is still a good pick. In the third round, tackle Trent Williams and tight end Trey McBride. Would you go for Collins instead of them? In Round 4, Smith isn't bad, especially since they hadn't already selected an offensive lineman. In Round 5, they get Baker, while in Round 6, they take Campbell. Both are Cardinals legends. Finally, they get a solid running back. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. 'He's Still Got That Hunger!' Buccaneers' Yaya Diaby Praises Newcomer Haason Reddick

'He's Still Got That Hunger!' Buccaneers' Yaya Diaby Praises Newcomer Haason Reddick originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took a risk when general manager Jason Licht signed free agent pass rusher Haason Reddick to a one-year deal worth up to $14 million. The risk didn't have anything to do with his perceived talent, but more to do with the year he had in 2024. Advertisement Reddick spent one season with the New York Jets after a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles. He sat out the offseason and the first seven games of the year in protest of a trade he did not want, then proceeded to register just one sack in his next 10 games. Many so-called experts called Reddick a problem because of his antics in New York. But that has subsided a bit as the offseason has progressed. New teammate Yaya Diaby couldn't be more impressed by Reddick's offseason. 'Man, I'm super geeked to have a guy like Haason, you know, it's just so amazing to see how hungry he is,' Diaby told SiriusXM NFL Radio via 'Everybody kind of turned away from him because of all the things that he's been through with the Jets, but he's still got that hunger even though he's up in age. He still has that hunger. "Having a guy like that on the other side and then having Calijah [Kancey] and Vita [Vea] in the middle, man, I'm super geeked for what this team got in store.' Advertisement Reddick has endeared himself to the fan base during his introductory presser. And The Athletic's Dan Pompei has praised the former Temple Owls defender since he arrived. "Haason Reddick had only one sack last season and skipped some offseason workouts, which led to uncertainty about his ability to impact the defense," Pompei wrote. "But Reddick's presence at minicamp was powerful. Reddick, who had 50 1/2 sacks between 2020 and 2023, hasn't forgotten how to get to the quarterback, even though he had an awful 2024 with the Jets. At 30, he appears to be in his athletic prime and is at the point in his life when knowledge and ability are intersecting quite nicely." Browns Slammed for Baker Mayfield Situation

Browns Slammed for Baker Mayfield Situation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It feels like Baker Mayfield was a Cleveland Browns quarterback ages ago. In reality, it's been just three seasons. Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers for a fifth-round pick on July 6, 2022, almost four months after the Browns acquired Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson. Advertisement And the Cleveland Browns have never been the same since. Watson has played in just 19 total games since arriving in Cleveland, while Mayfield has very quietly become a top-10 quarterback in the NFL. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of the 2023 season, when he posted a career season with 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns and a 64.3 completion percentage. Mayfield bested that in 2024 with another career season, throwing for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, with a 71.4 completion percentage. He's also started all 34 games for the Bucs in two seasons. An unnamed NFC personnel evaluator spoke with Matt Verderame of SI and seemingly took a shot at the Browns for the handling of Mayfield. Advertisement "I think Mayfield is proof of the concept of coaching matters, systems matter, team build matters," that evaluator said. "But more than anything, if you can process quickly and get the ball out on time from the pocket, you don't have to be 6-foot-5 to play (quarterback) in this league. "He has become a professional quarterback as opposed to a college kid just running plays." What might be worse for the Browns is that after $230 million, all guaranteed, the Watson era might be over after he suffered two Achilles injuries in October and January. Or, maybe that's the best part of the Watson era for the Browns. Advertisement Related: 'He's Still Got That Hunger!'
