Diversionary tactic: Opposition slams AAP as Punjab mulls tough anti-sacrilege law

India Today10-07-2025
With the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government considering the introduction of a stringent anti-sacrilege bill in the special session of the Vidhan Sabha starting today, political tempers are rising across the border state. While there is no official confirmation yet of whether the bill will be tabled in this session, sources suggest that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's government is finalising a tough law to curb acts of desecration of holy Sikh scriptures.advertisementAccording to sources, the draft of the proposed legislation includes punishments starting with a minimum of 10 years in prison, extending up to life imprisonment for those convicted of sacrilege. Capital punishment could also be part of the law if such acts lead to communal violence or deaths.
The draft also reportedly proposes action against the parents if the offender is a juvenile.OPPOSITION TRAINS GUNS ON AAPDelhi Minister and BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Wednesday accused the AAP government in Punjab of playing politics over the issue of sacrilege."I just want to ask what the Aam Aadmi Party government has been doing for the past three and a half years. This is nothing but a diversionary tactic by the state government. Law and order in Punjab is a mess and the state is under heavy debt. People are criticising this government and AAP just wants to divert the issue through this," Sirsa said while speaking to reporters in Chandigarh.Calling AAP MLA from Amritsar North Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh as their "poster boy", Sirsa alleged he was not allowed to speak about the sacrilege issues in the state assembly. Earlier this year, AAP suspended Singh, for five years over his alleged involvement in anti-party activities.Punjab Congress Chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring echoed similar concerns, stating, "It is good that a law will be made, but Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has thought about this after three and a half years. Even their battle against drugs took over three years to begin".SACRILEGE SHOULDN'T HAPPEN: AAPResponding to the criticism, Punjab Cabinet Minister Balbir Singh said, "We are working on it and our aim is that sacrilege incidents must not happen. Manjinder Singh Sirsa must focus on what is happening in Delhi."Earlier, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema had also hinted at a tough new law but maintained that the government was not rushing the process and did not confirm when the bill would be tabled."A panel of legal experts is being consulted over framing the law. We will take the opinion of LR (legal remembrancer) and the AG (Advocate General) office. The law will ensure that no person dares to indulge in sacrilege. Our work (on framing the legislation) is not finished yet. When the draft is completely ready, we will share it," Cheema had said.advertisement"Earlier, SAD-BJP government framed a wrong bill and then the Congress regime framed the wrong one. We will not bring a law that requires repeated amendments," he added.PREVIOUS EFFORTS FELL SHORTThis is the third attempt by a Punjab government to enact a strict anti-sacrilege law. Previous efforts by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) government in 2016 and the Congress government in 2018 either failed to secure Presidential assent or were returned by the Centre. In 2016, the SAD-BJP government had passed the Indian Penal Code (Punjab Amendment) Bill and CrPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill, recommending life imprisonment for the sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib. The Centre, however, returned these bills. Two years later, the Amarinder Singh-led Congress government expanded the scope by passing similar amendment bills in 2018, adding the Bhagavad Gita, Quran and the Bible to the list of holy books protected under the proposed law. But these too failed to get the President's assent.- Ends

BRS blames Congress, BJP for urea shortage in Telangana

HYDERABAD Senior leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and former MLA Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy has said farmers in the State are facing a serious crisis of urea shortage at a time when cultivation of Kharif crops has gained pace with rains over the last two weeks, as the State and Central governments are speaking in different tones on the issue. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he said despite having eight MPs in Lok Sabha from Telangana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was unable to supply urea in time. Instead of speaking on the Congress government, the BJP leaders were biding time on speaking against BRS and Union Minister Bandi Sanjay was unable to see the poor water level in Lower Manair Dam. However, the Congress government was not willing to switch on the Kannepally pump house to give water to the rain-deficit areas while huge quantities of water was flowing down BJP was also not interested in building pressure on the government to do so. The sole objective the two parties appears be defaming BRS come what may, he observed. While the Congress government was planning to harass its political opponents with the help of Kaleshwaram Commission report, the bickering in BJP had forced the party leadership to include Eatala Rajender's name in it, Mr. Venkata Ramana Reddy said and added that the two parties were making Kaleshwaram project defunct in the name of NDSA report. He also criticised the Congress government for its lack of sincerity in implementing 42% reservation to backward classes.

Robert Vadra dodged questions, put onus on deceased associates in money laundering probe: ED

Robert Vadra, businessman and husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has been accused by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of giving evasive and non-cooperative replies during questioning about a suspicious 2008 land deal in Gurugram's Shikohpur village. According to the ED's 332-page chargesheet, filed before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Delhi, Vadra repeatedly avoided direct answers and instead shifted full responsibility onto his three deceased associates, refusing to clarify his own role in the deal. His reluctance to cooperate significantly delayed the investigation and obstructed the agency's efforts to trace the flow of illicit funds. The federal agency alleges that Vadra used his political connections, including influence through former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, to pressurise the government officials into approving the land transaction, which involved alleged fraudulent practices and money laundering. The chargesheet reveals that Vadra's company, Skylight Hospitality Private Limited, acquired 3.5 acres of land for Rs 7.50 crore in a deal where no real payment was made. The cheque mentioned in the sale deed was never issued by Vadra, and its value was significantly below market rates. Despite these irregularities, the deal was pushed through by the Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP), allegedly after backdated approvals and altered plans to qualify for commercial licensing. Throughout the investigation, Vadra's evasiveness complicated the probe. The ED claims his refusal to provide clear responses hindered uncovering the full scope of the alleged money laundering and fraud. The agency has identified Rs 58 crore as proceeds of crime and provisionally attached 43 immovable properties worth Rs 38.69 crore linked to the case. Vadra and seven companies tied to him stand accused alongside others. The special PMLA court has scheduled August 28 to consider the ED's complaint and issued notices to Vadra and co-accused.

Congress leader Anand Sharma resigns as chairman of AICC Foreign Affairs Department Former union minister and Congress leader Anand Sharma has resigned from the post of the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Department of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), although he continues to be a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma was part of an all-party delegation that visited multiple countries as part of India's big diplomatic outreach Operation Sindoor . Anand Sharma was part of the delegation led by NCP-SCP leader Supriya Sule. The delegation also included Rajiv Pratap Rudy (BJP), Vikramjit Singh Sahney (AAP), Manish Tewari (Congress), Anurag Singh Thakur (BJP), Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), V Muraleedharan (BJP), and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin. Congress MP Manish Tewari conveyed his deep respect and admiration for Anand Sharma, highlighting his exceptional understanding of foreign affairs. The Congress MP further noted that he and Anand Sharma were part of the same group of all-party delegation, where members of the group considerably benefited from Sharma's insights. According to the sources, Manish Tewari had sent a request to the party to speak during the debate, Tharoor apparently conveyed unwillingness as his stance during the visit abroad of the delegation would be at variance with the party's strong stance against the government on aspects related to the military operation to hit target infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK. Tharoor led one of the all-party delegations.
