Guiao on ROS' best shot at beating TNT: 'Make this series long'
Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao stressed that their best chance at solving the TNT riddle is by dragging the series out as they go head-to-head in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup semifinals, their third straight meeting in the final four.
"Our best chance is to make this series long. If it becomes a short series talo kami so at least nanalo kami ngayon, we know it's going to be five games," Guiao said after they dominated TNT in Game 3 for a breakthrough win.
"Kung manalo pa kami, we know it's going to six games. So we know our best chance is really taking this series to the stretch."
[Our best chance is to make this series long. If it becomes a short series, we'll lose so at least we won today, we know it's going to be five games... If we win again, we know it's going to six games. So we know our best chance is really taking this series to the stretch.]
History hasn't been kind to Rain or Shine in its semifinal duels with TNT.
In the Season 49 Governors' Cup, TNT steamrolled the Elasto Painters with a dominant 4–1 series win, then replicated the feat in the Commissioner's Cup the very next conference. On both occasions, the Tropang Giga didn't just advance as they went all the way to capture the championships.
And head coach Yeng Guiao is hoping the third time's the charm for his squad. But he admitted it isn't going to be easy despite TNT losing key players in its grand slam bid.
"They're very competitive, they're very disciplined. And double-barrel shotgun e, Pogoy and Oftana, just their sheer talent. They can take over a game," Guiao added.
"Ang bigat pa rin nila. Sabi 'pag wala si RHJ, mas madali silang talunin. Hindi rin, ang hirap nilang talunin. At least naka-2-1 kami."
[They're still so strong. They said when RHJ isn't there, they'll be easier to beat. It's not true, they're so hard to beat. At least we were able to make it 2-1.]
Guiao sees Wednesday's Game 4 as a potential turning point in Rain or Shine's quest to finally overcome TNT.
"Susubukan naming i-break 'yung thread na 'yun. Wednesday is the big game. We feel if we can break through, kasi 'pag series namin 4-1 kami nang 4-1 so at least napantay na namin 'yung level nu'ng dalawang playoffs namin sa kanila," Guiao said
"'Pag nanalo kami sa Wednesday ibig sabihin nag-improve na kami. So tignan natin kung makakarating sa gano'n."
[We will try to break that thread. Wednesday is the big game. We feel if we can break through, because in the past series it's always 4-1 so at least we were able to equal that level in our two playoff meetings with them... If we win on Wednesday, that means we improved. So let's see if we can get there.]

Cheers! San Miguel's Tiongson, Cahilig, Rosales, Calma celebrate first PBA title
It took them a while, but finally, they can call themselves PBA champions. Last Friday, Juami Tiongson, Andreas Cahilig, Kris Rosales, and JM Calma relished their first title as the San Miguel Beermen defeated TNT in Game 6 of the PBA Philippine Cup finals. Tiongson, Cahilig, and Rosales have been in the PBA for quite a while. Tiongson was drafted in 2014, while Rosales made his PBA debut in 2016. Cahilig, meanwhile, entered the league in 2017. "It means more to me. Obviously, with everything I went through in my career. Baka nung nag-start ang career ko, nawala ako sa PBA," Tiongson said. "I made it back and glory to God, and hopefully, win more championships," he added. ? Cahilig, who was also Tiongson's teammate back in Terrafirma, echoed the same sentiment. "It feels very good, I'm very happy. It's been a hard couple of years but it finally paid out," he said. Although Cahilig was able to play in two games only because of his hyperextended knee, the Filipino-Swedish big man said he is now more motivated after winning his first title. "I'm very hungry to play in the finals again," he added. "It's been like 10 years, four or five teams, so this one means a lot to me," Rosales said. "This is one of my goals in my career and I'm able to achieve it with San Miguel." "There's a lot of stuff that I did behind the scenes to get to this point and for me to get this, it really means a lot," Rosales said, especially after revealing he almost retired during the pandemic. "It's really dear to my heart and hopefully I can get some more." ? Kris Rosales, also a first time champion @gmasportsph — JK Carandang (@jk_carandang) July 25, 2025 Calma, while relatively new in the league being drafted in 2022, said this is the first trophy in his career. "Unang-una, sobrang saya, di mo ma-express 'yung feeling, sobrang sarap," the former San Sebastian big man said. "First time ko rin mag-champion sa career ko. Thank you sa San Miguel, binigyan ako ng opportunity para mag-champion." ? Calvin Oftana doubtful for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup
Calvin Oftana's health status puts his availability for Gilas Pilipinas in doubt ahead of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. National team head coach Tim Cone revealed on Monday that Oftana is uncertain to suit up after the sharpshooter sustained injuries during TNT's finals series against San Miguel in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup. Oftana hurt both of his ankles in the grueling finals clash as the Tropang 5G eventually fell to the Beermen in six games. "We're not sure about Calvin. The medical reports are that he might be out a little bit longer," Cone said following Gilas' 103-98 win over the Macau Black Bears in a friendly encounter at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. "We were given a medical report from his camp so we're not sure if he's going to be available for the whole tournament." Cone, though, isn't worried about the manpower shortage with his trusted wards in Troy Rosario and RJ Abarrientos ready to step in whenever necessary. "We're gonna try to address that today or tomorrow and we got Troy and RJ in the wings to step in if necessary," Cone added. Cone also added that June Mar Fajardo, who sat out the send-off showdown against Macau, will take another three-day off before rejoining physical activities once they land in Jeddah, where they will figure in another friendly game against Jordan before the Asia Cup proper. "But June Mar, we expect him to start practicing when we land in Jeddah," Cone shared. "He changes the game for us, we have to play a different way with June Mar on the floor and that's the only concern because we haven't had practice time with him. We'll see what's going on with him." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Poy Erram reveals ACL injury
Poy Erram bared that he has sustained an ACL injury, just days after his TNT fell to San Miguel in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup finals last Friday. Erram revealed the development on Sunday as the seasoned big man is expected to be sidelined for some time, leaving the TNT frontcourt with Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser and Kelly Williams. "With a heavy heart, I share that I've suffered an ACL injury. It's painful, it's frustrating, and I have every reason to be mad," Erram said in a heartfelt post. The 36-year-old Erram hurt his ankle in Game 2, where he still managed to finish with six points, three assists, and two rebounds. He then missed the entire Game 3, but would return in Game 4 and contribute six markers and four boards in almost 19 minutes of action. Erram, though, did not make it again in the next two games as TNT fell short in its grand slam bid with the Beermen closing out the series with a 107-96 Game 6 triumph. Despite the setback, Erram is optimistic that he can still make a comeback. "But I also know that God has a greater plan for setback will only make me stronger physically, mentally, and spiritually.I trust that this journey will bring me even closer to Him," he added. "To all the fans: Thank you for your unwavering support. Your love means more than words can express. This is not the end. Just a new chapter in the story He's writing for me." —Bea Micaller/JKC, GMA Integrated News
