Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi Labels Hamas A Terrorist Group For First Time

New Delhi: In a significant statement, Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Sunday named Hamas among terrorist organisations that India is concerned about, placing it alongside groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and The Resistance Front (TRF). "The terrorist groups such as Hamas, LeT, TRF and some more names coming up... they'll be the permanent part that India is concerned (about)," Gen Dwivedi said at an event hosted by IIT-Madras. This is the first time an Indian Army chief has publicly described Hamas as a terrorist organisation, a classification India has so far avoided officially, even though much of the Western bloc, including the US, UK and EU, already designates the group as such. Hamas, which is not on the United Nations' list of designated terror groups, is known for its October 7, 2023, attack on Israeli civilians - a strike that triggered the devastating Gaza war, claiming over 60,000 lives, including thousands of children. While Hamas has historically not interfered in the Kashmir conflict, its name surfaced in Indian security circles earlier this year. On February 5 - observed in Pakistan as 'Kashmir Solidarity Day' - social media was flooded with images and videos showing Hamas members in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) alongside LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammed and other Pakistan-backed terror outfits. The individuals were seen delivering anti-India speeches and proclaiming that Kashmir would be "snatched from India," prompting alarm within New Delhi's security establishment. Ahead of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, Israel had been urging India to officially list Hamas as a terrorist group. However, New Delhi had maintained its distance from the designation, possibly due to geopolitical balancing in West Asia. Gen Dwivedi's statement, therefore, assumes strategic importance, signalling a potential recalibration in India's security posture and threat perception. His remarks suggest that, post-Operation Sindoor, India's counter-terrorism lens may be expanding beyond South Asia, encompassing groups with a global footprint that are now seen as intersecting with the Kashmir theatre.

Mob vandalises Fatehpur tomb amid temple claim; forces deployed, probe on

KANPUR Members of Hindu right-wing outfits allegedly vandalised a mausoleum in the Abunagar area of Fatehpur on Monday morning and hoisted a saffron flag at the structure, demanding permission to offer prayers there, claiming that a temple had previously existed at the site. The incident occurred within the Eidgah premises around 10 am. Police personnel at the site after members of Hindu right-wing outfits allegedly created ruckus at the mausoleum, in Fatehpur, Monday. (PTI Photo) The main door and grave inside the mausoleum, claimed to be as that of Nawab Abdul Samad by the Muslim side, were damaged. Police personnel were deployed at the site, but the group asserted that the building was not a mausoleum but an old temple dedicated to 'Thakurji', accusing 'anti-social elements' of erasing its original identity. Elaborate security arrangements had been put in place in and around the mausoleum after BJP's district president, Mukhlal Pal, had warned the district administration that he along with Hindu organisations would perform prayers at the site on August 11, claiming that the structure was a temple with a 'Shivling'. Witnesses said several young men climbed on to the roof and installed a saffron flag. The incident angered residents from the Muslim community, leading to a heated confrontation. Reinforcements were summoned from nearby police stations, including Sadar Kotwali, Radha Nagar, Malwan, Hussain Ganj, and Hariyawan. 'It is being probed how the mob managed to enter the mausoleum and took the law into their hands despite elaborate security arrangements. A case under relevant sections of the BNS will be registered against those found guilty in the matter,' said police. A video, which could not be independently verified, showed some people vandalising parts of the structure and hoisting a saffron flag. Additional SP Mahendra Pal Singh, ADM (FR) Avaneesh Tripathi and CO Gaurav Sharma among other senior officials reached the spot and attempted to pacify both sides. When the crowd refused to disperse, the police carried out a mild baton charge to push back those engaged in the disturbance. No FIR had been lodged in the matter till the filing of this report. 'At present, our priority is maintaining peace. An investigation is under way and further action will depend on the findings. A separate inquiry is going on to determine whether the structure was a temple or a mausoleum,' said district magistrate Ravindra Kumar. The confrontation then shifted to the dak bungalow crossing, about 500 metres from the site, where hundreds of activists blocked the road. Sitting on the tarmac, they began reciting the Hanuman chalisa, demanding that the administration hand over the disputed site to them. Additional security forces were requisitioned from Banda and Kaushambi districts to prevent the situation from spiralling. According to local accounts, the disputed structure is about 200 years old and is the final resting place of Nawab Abdul Samad. The matter had been simmering for several days. On August 9, the Math Mandir Sangharsh Samiti submitted a memorandum to district magistrate Ravindra Kumar, claiming the site was originally a Thakurdwara temple and urging the administration to remove 'encroachments' and those allegedly attempting to alter its character. The memorandum, signed by BJP leaders, was followed by announcements to celebrate Janmashtami there on August 11. District BJP president Pal released a video urging people to gather for religious rituals. Similar appeals were issued by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal. Taking note of the sensitivity of the issue, district magistrate Kumar and superintendent of police Anuj Singh inspected the location on Sunday, August 10, and stationed police personnel in anticipation of unrest.

Rahul's ‘vote chori' allegation, collector rate hike, farmers' demands set to dominate upcoming Monsoon Session of Haryana Assembly

The accusations of voter manipulation in the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections, the ongoing standoff with Punjab over the Satluj Yamuna Link Canal (SYL), farmers' compensation demands, hike in collector rates across the state, and law and order are the key issues that are likely to dominate the upcoming Monsoon Session of the House. To blunt the Opposition's attack, the Bharatiya Janata Party is expected to hit back at the Congress on the issue of its failure to decide on its Legislature Party Leader. It has been almost 10 months since the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections, and the Congress party has failed to announce its legislature party leader. If Congress does not announce its leader by August 22, it would be the third consecutive session of the Haryana Assembly to be held without any Leader of Opposition. The Congress continues to grapple with internal disarray as it heads into the session. Despite 37 MLAs in the 90-member House, Congress is without any official leader. In June, Rahul Gandhi met the senior leadership of the Haryana Congress at Chandigarh. Subsequently, party affairs in-charge B K Hariprasad announced that the party's ground-level organisational cadre – district presidents and block in-charge – would be announced within 15 days. The deadline kept shifting, but the party has not yet finalised its list of district presidents, nor the CLP leader. The BJP is all set to mock Congress on all these issues. The Congress, however, is formulating its strategy around various key issues on which it would try to corner the BJP. These include an ongoing standoff between Haryana and Punjab on the contentious SYL Canal and farmer-related issues. BKU leader Gurnam Singh Charuni recently sought immediate relief for farmers for major paddy crop loss due to the virus and waterlogging due to incessant rains across the region. Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has asked the state government to give Rs. 50,000 per acre as compensation for farmers who lost their crops. On the SYL Canal issue, Hooda criticised the government and said that 'it is all due to the inaction of the state government that the SYL canal issue is yet not resolved'. 'Instead of holding meetings with the Punjab Government, Haryana should move contempt of court proceedings against Punjab in the Supreme Court as the matter is already settled in favour of Haryana, but Punjab is not implementing the SC's decision,' Hooda had said. On the issue of SYL Canal, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said, 'Haryana will present its case in a positive and solution-oriented manner before the Supreme Court on August 13. We are confident that a fair and favourable resolution will be achieved'. The Opposition is also going to corner the ruling BJP on the issue of the hike in collector rates across the state, which varied from 50 to 250 per cent in several areas. However, the state government refuted the Opposition's accusations and said that around 70 per cent of the area only witnessed a 10 per cent collector rate hike. The issue of law and order is also likely to dominate the session's proceedings as the BJP and Congress came face to face last month when leaders from both parties hit out at each other on the issue of the crime rate in Haryana. Announcing the dates of the session, Saini had said it would commence on August 22, with its duration to be determined by the Assembly's Business Advisory Committee (BAC). 'Over the past 11 years, both the Centre and Haryana governments have focused on welfare schemes for the poor. The current BJP administration's goal is to empower the underprivileged. Our government has a zero-tolerance policy on crime. Police officers have been instructed to take prompt and on-the-spot action against criminal elements,' Saini said.
