Devendra Fadnavis defends Eknath Shinde's 'Jai Gujarat' call: Doesn't diminish...

India Today11 hours ago
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has come out in support of his deputy Eknath Shinde, who drew backlash for his 'Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat' slogan at an event in Pune, saying it did not diminish the Shiv Sena leader's love for Maharashtra."There is no need to create so much ruckus over it. We are all Indians. If someone questions Shinde ji's love for Maharashtra because of this, that's narrow thinking," Fadnavis said.advertisementCiting an incident wherein NCP founder Sharad Pawar had raised 'Jai Maharashtra, Jai Karnataka' slogan, Fadnavis said, "On an earlier occasion, when the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was unveiled, Sharad Pawar ji had said, 'Jai Maharashtra, Jai Karnataka. Does this mean that Sharad Pawar loves Karnataka more than Maharashtra?"
The Chief Minister also condemned the recent assault on a shopkeeper by workers from Raj Thackeray's MNS for speaking in Hindi and said that action will be taken against those who assault people speaking other languages."I want to be very clear. Taking pride in Marathi and assaulting people are different. If someone tries to assault people speaking other languages, the police will take action. Action has already been taken in this incident," Fadnavis said."I am surprised that these people appreciate English and act against Hindi," he added. In a video that surfaced on July 1, three men were seen entering a sweets shop and confronting the owner over his language and beating him up. The assaulters also warned the shopkeeper that he wouldn't be allowed to run a business in the area.- Ends(with inputs from ANI)Must Watch

Thackeray cousins share stage after 20 years

West Mumbai, July 5 (UNI) Estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray on Saturday shared stage at NSIC Dome in Worli for the first time in nearly two decades for a joint 'victory rally' to celebrate the BJP-led Mahayuti government's rollback of two contentious government resolutions on the three-language policy in Maharashtra. Called Marathi Vijay Diwas, the event is being organised by the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in Worli. The rally marks a political victory for the two parties after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revoked two resolutions that had introduced Hindi as a third language in primary schools. Language row: After 20 years, Thackeray brothers share stage at mega 'victory' rally

Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeary NEW DELHI: Uddhav Thackeray and cousin Raj Thackeray shared the stage at a mega rally in Mumbai organised by their parties to mark the withdrawal of government resolutions (GRs) related to the three-language policy. The rally is being held at the NSCI Dome in central Mumbai's Worli, which falls in the assembly constituency of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray. The gathering is also seen as significant ahead of the upcoming local body elections, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls. The last time the two Thackerays came together publicly was during the 2005 Malvan assembly bypoll campaign, shortly after former chief minister Narayan Rane had exited the undivided Shiv Sena. Raj went on to quit the party later that year and launched the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in 2006. Their latest appearance comes in the backdrop of protests against an April 16 government resolution (GR) issued by the BJP-led Mahayuti government, which made Hindi a compulsory third language for students in Classes 1 to 5 in English and Marathi medium schools. After a sharp backlash, the government amended the GR on June 17 to make Hindi optional. On June 29, the cabinet decided to withdraw both the original and amended GRs altogether. That same day, leaders from both Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS burned copies of the GRs and planned a protest march for July 5. However, following the rollback, the parties scrapped the protest and announced a joint 'victory' rally instead. For the "victory" event, both parties decided to avoid displaying their respective flags, symbols, or party colours during the rally, a move widely seen as a message of cultural unity over partisan politics. The symbolism of the event is also being weighed against the parties' recent electoral performances. In the 2024 Maharashtra assembly polls, Shiv Sena (UBT) won 20 seats, while the MNS failed to open its account.

MNS Mumbai president Sandeep Deshpande added: 'Do business if you're a businessman, don't try to act like our boss. If you insult Marathi in Maharashtra, you'll get a slap. Otherwise, stay in your lane, Mehta or whoever.' Kedia later tagged the police and senior leaders, saying, 'I'm receiving calls from several police stations... offering me protection, but under that pretext, they're asking for my location. This appears to be a dirty operation already underway, baying for my blood.' BJP's Mira-Bhayander MLA Narendra Mehta reacted, 'Pride in Marathi, but not by forgetting the limits of humanity!...I strongly condemn this act.' Kedia also reposted BJP minister Nitesh Rane's statement: 'Those who raise their hands against poor Hindus should also show the courage to go to Nalbazar and Mohammad Ali Road and beat up the jihadis! Because you never hear them speaking Marathi!'
