ADMIRING the Italian scenery in the sunshine, I take a piece of warm focaccia bread, dip it in olive oil and pop it in my mouth.
It is my third, but not final, piece as I enjoy some foodie foreplay to warm up for lunch.

Next is a plate of spaghetti carbonara, liberally sprinkled with Parmesan, followed by the creamiest tiramisu imaginable.
It is all washed down with half a bottle of white wine that I share with my husband Brian, 53, who works in marketing.
We were in Lake Garda in northern Italy on a rare holiday without our teenage boys, and as we strolled back to our apartment, we stopped for an ice cream, too.
Then came a siesta . . . and soon it was supper time.
That started with an Aperol spritz with crisps and a tomato and mozzarella salad with more focaccia, before a salami pizza and yet more wine.
At a conservative estimate, I must have eaten and drunk my way through a 5,725 calories a day, which is almost three times the NHS daily recommended amount of 2,000 for a woman.
Over a week, that's more than 40,000 calories.
And that's without the incidental ones — the odd beer by the pool, the extra glass of wine as you linger over food so delicious you can't rush it.
By day five, I had to ditch any clothes with a waistband that bit into my tummy as I didn't want a constant and uncomfortable reminder I was over-indulging.
Instead, I wore long, flowing dresses that skimmed over my expanding tummy.
I lost half a stone eating cold chips
Frankly, you only live once — or 'YOLO' as my two sons frequently say.
My weight had edged up over Christmas
And sipping on mineral water while picking at some grilled fish and salad is not my idea of a fun holiday.
So I put the scales out of my mind and ate and drank whatever I wanted.
When I got home I faced the reality — though it took me a couple of days to brace myself — and sure enough I'd put on 7lbs.
My holiday routine is about as far from my real life as it's possible to get.
Since March, when I tipped the scales at just over 10st, which is verging on overweight for my 5ft 3in height, I'd been on a rigid diet in preparation for donning my bikini.
My weight had edged up over Christmas, and the cold months of January and February saw me reach for stodgy pies and warming roasts.
But a glimpse of spring sunshine was a timely reminder that in three months I'd be by the pool exposing my wobbly flesh.
I pretty much gave up alcohol, as it's my absolute downfall. It's not only the calories in wine and cocktails, but the vast amount I eat with a hangover.
It's a menu a sumo wrestler would be proud of, taking in everything from Pot Noodles to bacon sandwiches and adding up to some 3,500 calories per day.
I swim for half an hour every day, but I added in a 45-minute gym workout.
By day five, I had to ditch any clothes with a waistband that bit into my tummy as I didn't want a constant and uncomfortable reminder I was over-indulging
And I started the Atkins diet, cutting all carbs and sugar and eating only meat, vegetables, eggs and a tiny bit of cheese.
The weight dropped off and before I went away I'd shed over a stone and hit my target weight of 9st.
In many ways it was easy with a few changes to my routine. For example, rather than meeting friends in the pub, I'd suggest we went for a walk.
Many of them were trying to lose weight too and were more than happy with the idea.
And my sister and I dieted together, ringing each other daily to compare what we'd eaten and how much we'd lost.
She went on holiday a few days before me and was clearly letting her hair down, WhatsApping me pictures of the ice cream she was devouring.
It made me even more excited about my own holiday. It was as if she was giving me permission to indulge.

'Over-indulge'
Mindset coach Vivienne Joy (viviennejoy.com), who specialises in weight loss, says: 'It's a very common phenomenon to let go on holiday as you switch identity.
'At home you're an adult, with responsibilities. You're anchored in a routine and you control what you're doing.
'When you go away, you switch identities and let go as you're in a different environment.
'You often adopt your teenage identity, one that is carefree with no responsibilities. That's why so many of us over-indulge.'
According to Vivienne, the more controlled you are at home, the more likely you are to pig out when abroad.
'I advise people to not be so rigid at home so they don't feel the need to let go so much,' she says.

'Because you will have to come home and face the music — or the scales.'
Vivienne's words resonate. When it comes to food, my holiday and home personas are poles apart. While I feel guilty if I eat even a Malteser at home, abroad I didn't think twice as I dithered between two flavours of ice cream . . . then plumped for both.
It feels as if nothing counts while on holiday, and I'm certainly not going to count calories as I tuck into a delicious bowl of pasta in the sunshine.
It helps that cocktails are cheaper too
When you're warm and happy, it's hard to care about anything more taxing than whether you fancy beer or an Aperol spritz.
It's a completely different mindset to when you're constantly juggling the needs of work and parenting two teenage boys.
At home I'm in a routine. I have to be organised, and in a way it's easier to be on a diet as I don't waste headspace and time deciding what to eat. It's going to be chicken or fish and vegetables.
Abroad, you drift blissfully from your breakfast — in my case, freshly baked croissants from a favoured cafe that you can smell as you walk down the street — to exploring local eateries to see which does the best pizza or pasta.
FIVE WAYS TO STAY IN SHAPE ON VACATION
TO stay trim on holiday, sustainable weight-loss expert Harriet Morris (theshiftinside.com) has these tips for you: You will be surrounded by cues to overeat, so aim for weight maintenance, not loss. Nobody goes on holiday every month, so cut yourself some slack. Before you go for dinner, look at the restaurant menu online or as you stroll past, and plan your meal ahead. Allow yourself the food you want, but eat it slowly. This will help you digest your meal better, which keeps you fuller for longer. Instead of denying yourself dessert, ask for a separate side plate when it arrives. Put a third of it on the plate and give it back to the waiter before you eat. That really is having your cake and eating it. Everyone's metabolism is faster at lunchtime, so eat bigger, more indulgent meals then instead of in the evening. Relax as much as possible. Stress raises blood sugar levels which – unless you do vigorous exercise – sends a message to your body to store fat. So make your holiday a time to unwind, not rush.
Everyone seems so happy, and warm-from-the-oven bread arrives just as you sit down at your table to peruse the menu.
That menu is devoid of the nutritional information that holds me back from ordering calorific treats when I'm out in London.
And it helps that the cocktails are cheaper, too, so just one more isn't going to break the bank. Everything that encourages restraint at home has gone.
And of course, I'm not in a rush, so the brisk walk to the Tube that helps shed the pounds isn't happening.
I still swim, but with no time restraints, I float happily on my back. But getting home was a rude awakening.
Those 7lbs I put on are now thankfully on the way out, and I don't regret a second of gaining them.
I loved my holiday and you only live once. After all, there's no point spending money going away if you just do the same as you do at home.

I'd heard whispers about Rovaniemi's summer scene, but I hadn't quite realised how passionately the city upholds its year-round festivities. My first stop is the Santa Claus Village — an immersive Christmassy epicentre north of the Finnish city centre. If it sounds bizarre, it ­certainly feels it. On the drive to the village, I watch bikini-clad crowds weaving through Rovaniemi's streets towards the Rovaniemen Uimaranta — a sandy beach on the banks of the River Kemijoki. It's 27C and summer is underway. Yet the signs of the city's festive subculture are unmissable. Free-roaming reindeer sunbathe next to roadsides, and we whizz past a barbershop named 'Santa Hair'. I'm basked in sunshine as I step into Santa Claus Village, a collection of red-painted alpine buildings amid fir and pine trees. Aside from Santa meet-and-greets, there's the functioning Main Post Office, Santa's Pets and Arctic Circle Husky Park. With free entrance, you can explore at your own pace. It's not the lack of snow that strikes me first, but the absence of crowds. Rather than hordes of ­thermal-clad tourists, there's a ­summery serenity in the air. Last December, there was a three-hour waitlist to begin queuing to see Santa Claus, now I watch a young family walk straight in. Ignorance is bliss and I've decided I'm too anxious to discover if I'm on the 'naughty or nice' list. Instead, I'm focused on meeting some of the four-legged helpers. 'When people visit in winter, I always tell them to visit in summer,' says Mrs Claus, in a lilting voice with a twinkle in her eye. The thawing of the forest shapes the activities that Santa Claus Village has on offer, though not as dramatically as you might expect. Inside the Post Office, the elves still stamp and mail letters, sorting selected letters into a designated post box marked 'December 2025'. The Husky Park welcomes tourists to play with puppies or take rides on wheeled sledges adapted for snowless conditions. While trainers replace clunky snowshoes for walks along forest trails. Christmas isn't a season, but a mindset. Now, I'm leaving with certainty that the spirit of Santa is as magical in July as it is in December.

If you have spent the past week fantasising about Aperol spritzes on the Amalfi Coast or stretching out on the beach in the Maldives, you've likely come across a cruel reality. The more you check flight prices, the higher they seem to go. ‌ By the time you search for the third time, it feels as if the airline' s clocked your interest and thought, 'we've got them'. Luckily, with the right booking tricks, you can still dodge the summer surge and save your budget for the fun stuff, like that extra round of cocktails. ‌ Andrea Platania, travel expert at Transfeero, says your first move is to slip into stealth mode. 'Using incognito or private browsing stops airlines and booking platforms from tracking your search history and adjusting fares,' he explains. ‌ 'In Chrome, it's the three dots in the top right and 'New Incognito Window'. Safari has 'New Private Window' under the File menu, and Firefox gives you the option through its menu button. It only takes seconds, but it can save you hundreds.' Platania also insists on clearing your cookies, noting: 'Cookies store your browsing behaviour, and travel sites can use that data to increase prices if they think you're keen. Wipe them and you reset the game.' Summer booking hacks most travellers miss Flexibility is your secret weapon, says Platania. Prices are often lower mid-week, and if you can stomach a 5am departure or a late-night landing, the savings can be substantial. Platania explained: 'If you're booking for August, avoid Sunday returns, it's one of the priciest travel days. 'It signals urgency, and the algorithms will exploit that,' Platania says. ‌ Another common pitfall is booking close to weekends or bank holidays, when prices are often at their peak. And beware of waiting until payday as airlines know this is when many people book, so fares can rise sharply. Then there's the infamous 'only two seats left at this price' warning. 'Sometimes it's genuine, but other times it's marketing psychology at its finest,' says Platania. 'Don't panic-book unless you've checked the same flight on a second device or different booking site.'

The man, 51, was stopped by Italian Carabinieri police after a guide saw him put fragments from a brick and five stones lifted from the UNESCO World Heritage Site in his backpack. Locals say those who take treasures from the site are hexed after tourists who helped themselves to ancient items suffered a series of misfortunes. A police spokesman said: "This week we caught a Scotsman before he could get away but we may have saved him from the curse. "He said he had no idea it was forbidden to remove artefacts from Pompeii. "He was trying to get out of trouble but it did not work." Officials say the man was stopped near a train station after lifting pieces of the ancient ruins during a night-time tour on Thursday. Pompeii near Naples was home to up to 20,000 people until volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted sending scorching 250°C ash clouds across the city in 79AD. The mountains of debris helped preserve the site, which is visited by 2.5million tourists each year. Tonnes of volcanic ash protected the settlement's buildings until archaeologists could unearth its basilica and temples. The Tragic History of Pompeii Voids left by human bodies which were trapped underneath have been filled with plaster and resin to recreate figures trapped by the disaster. Up to 20,000 visitors each day come to see them. An American woman who took two stones from Pompeii in 2011 says she got stage 3 breast cancer and her marriage collapsed prompting her to return the items. In 2020, a Canadian posted mosaic tiles and ceramics she had taken to a travel agent in the city claiming she suffered from bad luck, including two bouts of serious illness and financial problems. And in 2015, an English tourist returned a fragment of an art work her parents lifted decades earlier claiming it had brought years of misfortune. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director general of the archaeological park in Pompeii, said: 'Congratulations and thanks to the attentive tour guide, to our excellent custodians and security staff, and to the Carabinieri for this collaborative effort to protect our heritage. 'Controls will be reinforced in the coming days due to the high influx of visitors during the summer.'
