Siddharth P. Malhotra reveals how Aditya Chopra's support kept 'Maharaj' alive amid setbacks
Filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra has opened up about the emotional support he received from Aditya Chopra during the making of "Maharaj."
In an interview with IANS, Malhotra shared that Chopra's encouragement and belief in the project played a crucial role in keeping him motivated through challenging times.
Siddharth
recalled how he stayed resilient over the years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He credited Aditya Chopra, his mentor and the driving force behind the film's production, for believing in him.
He shared, "There were moments when I felt hopeless, especially during the two years of Covid. But your family keeps you going-my parents, my wife, my kids, even my dog Simba. Junaid is like a son to me. We leaned on each other."
"When Aditya Chopra, my mentor and the reason I produced this film, watched it, he sent me a letter saying, "I'm proud of you."
That was my first real reward. He told me again after seeing the final cut that I had made a large-scale, powerful film, and that it would elevate me as a director. Netflix also loved the film Maharaj. So, I knew we had something strong. I'm thankful that it finally reached people-and to those who haven't seen it yet, I say: please watch it.
"
Siddharth P. Malhotra also shared the struggles he faced while launching
Junaid Khan.
He revealed that although there was a detailed 21-22-day marketing plan in place, none of it was executed as expected.
"The entire film had a marketing plan. We had a full 21-22-day promotional strategy laid out. But none of it happened-no interviews, no media push from Aamir sir, Netflix, or YRF," Siddharth said. He admitted the unconventional release strategy was not by choice and called the situation "heartbreaking." Still, he stood by the team's decision, stating, "We believed in the film."
Reflecting on how he managed to stay hopeful despite Covid 19 delays and the controversy surrounding the film's release, Siddharth acknowledged moments of doubt.
"You do lose hope sometimes. But then your family, friends, and team hold your hand and remind you why you started."
The 2024 released historical drama marked the acting debut of Aamir Khan's son Junaid Khan. The film also featured Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey and Sharvari. Based on the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862 and Saurabh Shah's novel about the case, the thriller was released on 21 June 2024 on Netflix.

K-Pop Demon Hunters' Cast Reveals How They Reacted To BTS' Shout-Out
Last Updated: KPop Demon Hunters has broken several records, including becoming Netflix's biggest animated original feature ever and the second most-streamed English original movie of all time. Netflix's K-pop Demon Hunters has become a global phenomenon. Released on the streaming platform on June 20, the animated musical has broken several records, including becoming Netflix's biggest animated original feature ever and the second most-streamed English original movie of all time. And that's not all, Golden, one of the songs in the film's soundtrack, made history on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by becoming the first K-pop girl group song, although fictional, to top the chart. Now, Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji Young Yoo, the stars behind the voices of the demon-hunting K-pop girl group HUNTR/X (Huntrix), are sharing their experience on receiving unexpected love and admiration from all over the world. The actresses sat down for an interview with Gold Derby and discussed the possibility of receiving awards and recognition from popular K-pop artists like BTS. For Arden, who plays Rumi, the lead vocalist of Huntrix, the possibility of getting an Oscar feels surreal. She said, 'It would be such an honour. We feel so lucky just to be here and to be receiving all this love. It's amazing to be part of a movie that makes everybody feel good." May Hong, who voiced Mira, shared that she couldn't 'wrap" her head around the fact that their film is contending for Oscars. Ji Young Yoo, who was the voice behind Zoey, the maknae of Huntrix, agreed to what May said and added, 'I think the fact that we went from making a movie that I think we all really loved and cared about to it developing into this phenomenon worldwide, to what is quickly becoming an Oscar and awards run…I'm just along for the ride, and I'll process it all after." KPop Demon Hunters not only received positive reactions from the viewers but also got a seal of approval from real-life K-pop artists. From BTS to Seventeen, some of the industry's biggest names have praised the film and its authenticity. When asked how they reacted after watching famous personalities embracing their film, the actresses shared that it was a 'we did it" moment. Arden mentioned, 'That stamp of approval! We're like… Yes, we did it! I think we're just so thankful because all of these idols and artists who are loving the movie have really helped us get here." May Hong added, 'When I see that they all have millions and millions of followers, I also can't wrap my mind around that they're so into what we have done. Obviously, we didn't sing or dance personally, but still. Even with Lee Byung Hun [the Squid Game actor who voiced Gwi Ma, the king of demons in KPop Demon Hunters], it's like, so that person knows I exist?" Sharing that they were initially worried about whether the audience would accept the depiction of Korea in the film, Young Yoo quipped, 'We wanted to make sure we got Korea right, that we got the culture right. All of us were like, 'Will they approve? Will they accept it?' So to see them not just accept it but embrace it, and support it, and give us so much love, is just the biggest sigh of relief. " She further added, 'The warmth that spread through our bodies when all of this started happening was really just wonderful, and as an ARMY for 10 years, going on 11 now, there's no words. I felt my organs shut down (when BTS mentioned the film)." Arden explained that the moment was unforgettable. 'All of our phones were blowing up. Everyone was like, 'Did you see it?'" she revealed. Meanwhile, Ji Young Yoo candidly mentioned, 'Everyone kept asking me what I thought, and there's no thoughts. I thought I might faint." A sing-along theatrical version of KPop Demon Hunters is set ot be released on August 23 and 24. view comments First Published: August 16, 2025, 11:18 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR's War 2 mints over Rs 16 crore in in North America
War 2, starring Hritik Roshan and Jr NTR, had a good start in North America. The film earned USD 1.93 million by its second day. Rajinikanth's Coolie, however, is leading. Coolie earned USD 4.67 million in the same period. Coolie has surpassed Kabali's record. Both films are targeting different audiences. The overseas box office is seeing an exciting clash. The much-awaited War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan , Jr NTR , and Kiara Advani , has opened to a solid start at the North American box office. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the high-octane YRF Spy Universe entry registered USD 1.417 million on its first day, including Telugu collections of USD 605,000. The film had already built strong momentum with its premiere shows, raking in USD 925,000 (with Telugu contributing USD 500,000). By Day 2, till 9 a.m. IST, War 2 had added another USD 520,000, taking its cumulative to USD 1.93 million ( Rs 16.94 crore). This is an impressive debut for a Hindi-language action spectacle in North America, reaffirming Hrithik Roshan's overseas pull and Jr NTR's pan-India reach following RRR and Devara : Part 1. The Telugu version's contribution highlights the film's crossover appeal, aided by Jr NTR's global fan base. Kiara Advani's presence, coupled with Mukerji's stylish vision, has also made the film a hot ticket among younger audiences. However, comparisons with Rajinikanth 's Coolie which released on the same day are inevitable. Lokesh Kanagaraj 's directorial, headlined by the Superstar alongside Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir , Upendra, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, and Rachita Ram , stormed the North American box office with USD 3.04 million from premieres alone. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo It followed this with USD 95,000 on Day 1 and USD 720,000 by Day 2 morning, taking its total to USD 4.67 million within just 48 hours. The comparison shows Coolie clearly ahead of War 2 in terms of North American box office pace. While War 2 touched USD 1,93 million by its second day morning, Coolie had already breached the USD 4.5 million mark in the same timeframe, even going on to surpass Kabali's nine-year-old record of USD 4.44 million lifetime. In comparison War 2 had more walk-ins over Coolie but Rajinikanth's film earned more as it had a heavy advance booking in place. Industry observers believe the two films cater to slightly different audiences. Coolie thrives on Rajinikanth's massive diaspora fanbase and Lokesh's cult following, particularly in Tamil-speaking regions, while War 2 is a Hindi-Telugu bilingual juggernaut backed by the strength of YRF's Spy Universe. The latter's box office legs will depend on how well it performs across both North Indian and South Indian diaspora markets. Ultimately, War 2 has delivered a strong opening, but Rajinikanth's Coolie still holds the crown for the biggest Tamil (and pan-Indian) storm at the North American box office this season. With both films in play, the overseas box office is witnessing one of its most exciting clashes in years. However, earlier this year, Vijay Deverakonda shared why he consciously guards his private world even after previously admitting he's in a relationship. 'I've always felt like it's a strange split, you want to be an actor and be known by the world, but you also want to remain anonymous. It's some kind of psychotic dichotomy," he told The Hollywood Reporter India. The actor went on to say that if he could create a fictional version of himself and keep his real identity hidden, he would. 'I used to tell people that if I could wear a mask that didn't look like me, and that guy could be the star while I still got to act, I'd be happy. Because for me, Vijay Deverakonda the actor, I operate for him," he explained. Meanwhile, on the work front, Rashmika was last seen in Sikandar opposite Salman Khan. Directed by AR Murugadoss, the film is now streaming on Netflix. On the other hand, Vijay Deverakonda was recently seen in Kingdom, a spy thriller helmed by Jersey director Gowtam Tinnanuri.
