A widow has told how there is a "gaping hole" in her family after the death of her husband from food poisoning on a birthday holiday to Fuerteventura. Leslie Green, 70, contracted the bacterial infection salmonella from eating undercooked chicken at their all-inclusive hotel and died in hospital on 4 November 2024 after developing sepsis. An inquest heard Mr Green and his wife Julie, from Little Lever in Bolton, had only eaten at the Occidental Jandia Playa resort during their £2,300 stay, booked through Jet2 holidays. Jet2 told the BBC it would be "inappropriate" to comment due to an ongoing legal claim but offered its "thoughts and condolences" to the Green family.
The BBC has also contacted Barcelo Hotel Group, which owns the Occidental Jandia Playa resort, for a comment. Mrs Green said life "would never be the same" following her husband's death but she hoped by speaking out she could warn others about the dangers of salmonella."I still struggle to comprehend how we went on holiday, but Leslie didn't come home," she said.
Mrs Green, 60, who is a retired nurse, was also taken ill a few days after her husband and spent a week in hospital on the Spanish island. She said: "Leslie was such a loving and caring husband and dad. He was my best friend and life without him will never be the same."Rochdale Coroner's Court heard how Mr Green began suffering symptoms including diarrhoea on 9 October 2024, nine days after the couple's arrival. He became dehydrated and was seen by the in-resort doctor on 12 October, who sent him to a local clinic to be given fluids. However, his condition deteriorated and he was admitted to hospital the following day. Mr Green, a retired delivery driver for the Manchester Evening News, was later placed into an induced coma, but doctors said nothing further could be done for him. The couple's daughter Becci, 35, flew out to be at her father's bedside and was there when the decision was made to end his life-support.
The coroner concluded Mr Green had died from food poisoning contracted whilst on holiday after eating partially cooked chicken.His body was flown home on 12 November, with his wife and daughter on board the repatriation flight. After the inquest, Mrs Green said: "I'd do anything not to be in this position and for Leslie to be in our lives, but I know that's not possible. "Listening to the evidence has been difficult but it was something I was determined to do to honour Leslie's memory."The family's solicitor, Jennifer Hodgson from law firm Irwin Mitchell, said the family had their concerns "validated" by the inquest. She said: "While nothing can make up for the ordeal Julie and her family have been through, it's now vital that lessons are learned to improve hygiene for other holidaymakers in the future."

Occidental Jandia Playa has today maintained it operates "a strict food hygiene and safety protocol" and adheres to all regulations. The establishment has issued a robust statement after an inquest revealed Leslie Green, a father from Bolton, Greater Manchester, developed the bacterial infection salmonella at the all-inclusive resort. Last week's hearing was told the 70 year old gentleman consumed undercooked poultry at Occidental Jandia Playa on Fuerteventura, one of Spain's Canary Islands. Nevertheless, the Barceló Hotel Group, which operates the Occidental Jandia Playa, stated yesterday that no salmonella has been identified at the property in the past twelve months, reports the Mirror. The spokesperson commented: "We also hold certificates from the aforementioned external audit company confirming that no salmonella has been detected at the hotel in the last twelve months. These audits and controls reflect our ongoing commitment to the health and safety of guests." Rochdale Coroner's Court was told Mr Green, a retired delivery driver, developed symptoms including diarrhoea several days into the trip and his condition worsened. The coroner determined Mr Green had perished from food poisoning acquired whilst on holiday after consuming partially cooked chicken. The Barcelo Hotel Group, established in Spain in 1981, expressed its deep sorrow over the incident. The full statement reads: "The Barceló Hotel Group deeply regrets the death of a guest at our Fuerteventura hotel in November 2024. "On behalf of the entire group, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the guest's family and loved ones and reiterate our firm commitment to the safety and well-being of our customers. "The Barceló Hotel Group has a strict food hygiene and safety protocol that includes rigorous internal controls and periodic external audits performed by an independent company renowned in food safety. Health chiefs have issued a warning after 16 people who took 'defective' vitamin D supplements were left hospitalised. The incident took place in the Balearic Islands, which are located off the eastern coast of mainland Spain. The individuals were rushed to hospital where they were diagnosed with hypervitaminosis D, a condition caused by excessive intake of the vitamin. It has been shown to cause a build up of calcium which can lead to serious health issues including kidney damage and loss of bone density. Local officials have revealed the first identified patients experienced abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. But other symptoms can include constipation, dehydration, fatigue, confusion, muscle weakness, increased thirst and passing large amounts of urine. They launched an investigation after a medical examination revealed some patients had acute kidney failure, which can be life threatening. The authorities confirmed the previously fit-and-healthy individuals had consumed 'defective' multivitamins purchased online without medical advice. Now they have warned that this is a risk of not getting them through an official doctor, who can do a blood test to check you actually have a deficiency. The Spanish Ministry of Health said: 'Supplements should only be prescribed when clinically justified. Unsupervised use, particularly when exceeding recommended doses may lead to adverse effects and is not recommended without specific medical indication.' While the 'defective' batch was initially confined to the Balearic Islands, they may have been distributed elsewhere, added the Spanish Agency for Food and Nutrition. They also warned high doses can be dangerous after multiple cases of overdose in adults and children were reported through the country's health record system. In the UK, during the spring and summer months the NHS says the majority of people should be able to get all the vitamin D they need through sunlight. However, in the autumn and winter months, people may need to take vitamins to ensure they get the recommended 10 micrograms (mcg) a day. This is how much adults and children above the age of one need, but babies up to the age of one year only need 8.5 to 10 mcg per day. The NHS advice is that you should never take more than 100 mcg of any one vitamin a day, and children between one and ten should have no more than 50 mcg. Babies under 12 months old should never have more than 25 mcg of the vitamin per day. It follows a warning earlier this month from a nutrition expert that taking too many supplements can do more harm than good. A previous survey of over 2,000 Britons by Which? found three quarters take supplements, and about one in five respondents take four or more each day. But, writing for the product testing website, Dr Rachel Woods, who has a PhD in nutrition, said overloading on supplements can cause nausea and diarrhoea, or in more extreme cases, weakened bones and birth defects. And, when taken in excess, they have been linked to liver, heart, and kidney damage—which can prove fatal. 'Many people take supplements for years without knowing whether they need them or how much is too much,' she wrote. Many people do not realise, she explained, that fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K aren't flushed out of the body, which can lead to a build-up of harmful levels. 'Too much vitamin D, for example, can lead to a build-up of calcium, which may damage the kidneys and heart, as well as weakening bones,' she said.
