2025 Emmys outrage: Why your favorite genre shows like ‘Outlander,' ‘Interview With the Vampire,' and ‘Squid Game' were snubbed

The 2025 Emmy nominations present a curious case for genre television.
While sci-fi, horror, and fantasy hits like Severance, The Last of Us, and Andor received multiple nominations on Tuesday, many fan-favorite outside-the-box programs — think Outlander, Interview With the Vampire, Squid Game, The Wheel of Time, and Dark Winds — were snubbed in major categories by the Television Academy, resulting in social media outrage. So, what gives?

Here's how 'The Studio' scored a record 23 Emmy nominations
First, a bit of a backstory. Prior to 2005, Emmy-winning dramas almost always took place in police stations, hospitals, or courtrooms — yawn. But Lost changed all of that. ABC's science-fiction hit won Best Drama Series 20 years ago and opened the door for the fantastic to be taken seriously by the Television Academy. Game of Thrones continued the voters' newfound love affair with genre fare when it won Best Drama Series four times between 2015 and 2019. GoT was ineligible in 2017, which is when the dystopian The Handmaid's Tale prevailed.
Post-Lost, nominees for Best Drama Series have fully embraced all types of stories, including super-powered individuals (Heroes and The Boys), serial killers (Dexter), vampires (True Blood), robots (Westworld), 1950s monsters (Lovecraft Country), 1980s monsters (Stranger Things), 2070s monsters (Fallout), aliens (The Mandalorian and Andor), dragons (House of the Dragon), cannibals (Yellowjackets), virtual reality (3 Body Problem), and mind control (Severance). But, as is always the case with awards shows, not everything can make it in, and the list of snubbed programs would be too long to name.
Here are some beloved genre shows that were snubbed in the 2025 Emmy nominations.
It has now been seven years since Starz's romance epic was last cited at the Emmys. It was nominated in 2018 and 2016 for Best Period Costumes, in 2016 for Best Period Production Design, and in 2015 for Best Music Composition. The list of egregious snubs through the years includes Caitriona Balfe as time-traveling doctor Claire Randall Fraser and Sam Heughan as her Highlander true love, Jamie Fraser, plus all of the show's writers, directors, and producers.
So, what's with all of the Outlander hate? The Television Academy has always had a tough time puckering up to romance shows. The only major exception in recent years was Bridgerton, which won two trophies for hairstyling in 2021 and 2022. Of course, that period series had the benefit of being one of the most watched programs in Netflix history. Comparatively, Outlander airs on Starz, a network that frequently gets forgotten by Emmy voters, despite rigorous campaigning.
Outlander submitted six actors on the 2025 Emmy ballot for Season 7, Part 2: leads Heughan and Balfe, and supporting players John Bell as Young Ian Murray, David Berry as Lord John Grey, Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie, and Sophie Skelton as Brianna MacKenzie. No guest stars were entered this year.
The good news? Season 2 of AMC's blood-sucker received two below-the-line bids for Best Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Hairstyling and Best Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup (Non-Prosthetic). But it was snubbed for series, acting, writing, directing, etc., despite an impressive 98 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, the story was already made into a 1994 film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, which received two Oscar nominations for Best Score and Best Art Direction.
Interview With the Vampire didn't even get in for its "Theatres des Vampires" production design or its atmospheric cinematography, which seems Le'strange. AMC used to be an Emmy favorite when dramas like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead were the talk of the town, but things changed when streaming outlets took over the industry. AMC's last major awards contender was Better Call Saul, which couldn't win a single Emmy despite 53 nominations.
The four acting submissions for Season 2 of Interview With the Vampire were: lead actor Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac, supporting actor Sam Reid as Lestat de Lioncourt, supporting actress Delainey Hayles as Claudia, and guest actor Luke Brandon Field as Young Daniel Molloy.
In 2022, Season 1 of Squid Game received 14 Emmy nominations and won six: director (Hwang Dong-hyuk), actor (Lee Jung-jae), guest actress (Lee You-mi), production design, stunt performance, and visual effects. How did Season 2 receive exactly zero bids?
Blame the buzz. The second season was really just Part 1 of the final story, and it likely left voters feeling unfulfilled, especially with its cliffhanger ending. The third season, aka Part 2 of that last chapter, streamed in June and will be eligible at the 2026 Emmys. Reviews for Season 2 were still adequate — 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes — but viewers simply weren't as enamored by Seong Gi-hun/Player 456's return to the deadly games.
Gold Derby's users had predicted (or hope-dicted) that the show were receive a Best Drama Series nomination and that featured star Choi Woo-seok as Thanos would contend in Best Drama Supporting Actor, but that simply wasn't to be. Better luck next year?
The Prime Video fantasy series was canceled in May after three seasons, essentially ending its 2025 Emmy campaign. Yes, occasionally, canceled shows do reap bids. But it's likely that TV Academy members simply didn't want to waste a vote on something the network and studio were no longer backing. The Wheel of Time was also snubbed in its first two seasons, suggesting that it was never on voters' radars to begin with.
The series was developed by Rafe Judkins and based on the books of the same name by Robert Jordan. "We were really running and gunning it," Judkins told Gold Derby about the epic scope of the heralded fourth episode of Season 3, "The Road to the Spear." Meanwhile, fans are running and gunning to try to get it picked up by another network, so far to no avail.
Ten members of the ensemble cast were submitted on this year's Emmy ballot: lead stars Daniel Henney as Lan Mandragoran and Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred; supporting players Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Josha Stradowski as Rand al'Thor, Madeleine Madden as Egwene Al'Vere, Sophie Okonedo as Siuan Sanche, and Zöe Robins as Nynaeve al'Meara; and guest performers Robert Strange as Eelfinn, Natasha Culzac as Sevanna, and Olivia Williams as Morgase Trakand.
One of Gold Derby's 10 best shows of 2025 (so far), Dark Winds was overlooked despite its 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score for Season 3. From the opening cameos of show producers Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin as jailbirds, to the heart-shattering final moments, this season was yet another triumph for the still-never-nominated AMC series. (Hmm, we're beginning to wonder if there's an AMC curse at the Emmys.)
The psychological thriller set in 1970s embraces and elevates Indigenous culture, which series star Zahn McClarnon describes as "telling our own stories in an authentic way." The program led into those themes at its FYC event in June, but alas, the cultural zeitgeist has yet to be blown away by Dark Winds. Remember, sometimes it takes a few years for a show to really catch on at the Emmys, so fingers crossed voters will tune in when Season 4 airs in the future.
Besides McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn, five other performers were hoping to hear their names called as Emmy nominees: supporting actors Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee, Deanna Allison as Emma Leaphorn, Jenna Elfman as Sylvia Washington, and Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito; and guest star Bruce Greenwood as Tom Spenser.

White House Calls ‘The View's' Joy Behar an 'Irrelevant Loser' After She Says Trump's 'Jealous of Obama'

President Donald Trump's administration isn't just taking aim at late night hosts, as they've now turned their attention to daytime programming. The White House had some strong words to say about The View co-host Joy Behar after she said Trump was 'so jealous' of former President Barack Obama. More from The Hollywood Reporter Five Things to Know About Donald Trump's "AI Action Plan" for Government Regulation Trump's End Game With The Wall Street Journal Defamation Lawsuit Trump's Side Deal With "New Owners" of Paramount May Hint at FCC Concessions Behar's comments were made during Wednesday's episode of ABC's daytime talk show, when the panel — consisting of Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines and Alyssa Farah Griffin — was discussing Trump's recent attack on his predecessor. During an earlier press conference, in an attempt to distract from questions about the Jeffrey Epstein files, Trump accused Obama of 'treason' and his administration of trying to 'steal' the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. In response, Obama spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush called Trump's claims 'outrageous,' 'bizarre' and a 'weak attempt at distraction.' On The View, Behar also had some thoughts. 'First of all, who tried to overthrow the government on Jan. 6. Who was that again? That was not Obama,' she said, referring to the deadly insurrection on the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, which was mostly led by Trump's supporters. 'The thing about him is he's so jealous of Obama, because Obama is everything that he is not: trim, smart, handsome, happily married and can sing Al Green's song 'Let's Stay Together' better than Al Green. And Trump cannot stand it. It's driving him crazy,' Behar added. White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers then clapped back at the View co-host in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, which read, 'Joy Behar is an irrelevant loser suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. It's no surprise that The View's ratings hit an all-time low last year. She should self-reflect on her own jealousy of President Trump's historic popularity before her show is the next to be pulled off air.' Over the past week, Trump has been firing off attacks at late night hosts after it was announced that Stephen Colbert's The Late Show would be coming to an end in May 2026. CBS, which is owned by Paramount Global, cited a 'financial decision' amid a declining linear TV landscape for the cancellation. However, there has been other speculation swirling as the news came shortly after Paramount agreed to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit from Trump, who sued over former Vice President Kamala Harris' 60 Minutes interview. Sources previously told THR that Paramount believes the lawsuit posed a threat to Skydance's deal to acquire the company, as it seeks approval by the FCC under the Trump administration. Colbert has openly criticized the settlement on his CBS show. Following the news, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to positively gloat about The Late Show being canceled, writing, 'I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!' Colbert later clapped back at the president, saying on his show, 'How dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go fuck yourself.' The time-travel stones are up to their old tricks in Outlander: Blood Of My Blood trailer

Those pesky damn time travel stones! Always catapulting young women through time for romantic adventures. We knew that, much like the flagship series, Outlander: Blood Of My Blood would feature multiple timelines. But we didn't know that, like her daughter Claire, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) would also find herself sent back in time. But according to the new trailer for the prequel, the love stories of Claire and Jamie's parents are even more entangled than we could've imagined. According to a synopsis from Starz, Outlander: Blood Of My Blood begins 'on the eve of an earlier Jacobite rebellion.' In 1714, Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) fall in love despite the fact that 'my father detested yours,' as she tells him in the trailer. Meanwhile, Vanity Fair reports that Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) fell in love writing letters back and forth while Henry serves in the first World War. But their long-distance, wartime courtship ain't got nothing on accidentally being separated by 200 years. 'What if you never find her?' Someone asks Henry after Julia's disappearance. 'I will,' he vows. The Outlander: Blood Of My Blood cast also includes Tony Curran as Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, Séamus McLean Ross as Colum MacKenzie, Sam Retford as Dougal MacKenzie, Rory Alexander as Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, and Conor MacNeill as Ned Gowan. Executive producer Maril Davis teased to Vanity Fair, 'With prequels, the challenge is you know exactly where you're ending. But we have a lot of freedom in figuring out how to get there. We don't have a book series on this one, so we're definitely not going to have that debate necessarily of, 'Oh, this was in the book this way, but the show's doing it a different way.' But sometimes it's nice to have the blueprint.' Outlander: Blood Of My Blood, which has already been renewed for a second season, will premiere August 8. More from A.V. Death comes for Jamie Fraser in Outlander's final season trailer

It's the end of an era for Starz as Outlander concludes next year with its eighth season in early 2026. But while one popular show is bidding us adieu, its prequel is staking a claim as the cable network's next big historical romance saga. Blood Of My Blood, which premieres next month, follows two different, intersecting love stories. As San Diego Comic-Con gets underway, the cast and producers of both dramas offer a first look at Outlander's last hurrah and what to expect from its spin-off. Of course, everything about this franchise hinges on an undying love for time travel shenanigans, as well-established in Diana Gabaldon's novels. First, it was Claire Beauchamp (Caitriona Balfe) who went back in time to 1743 Scotland and ended up meeting and marrying the true love of her life, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Eventually, their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and son-in-law Roger (Richard Rankin)—along with their own kids—were able to use the ancient stones in Craigh na Dun to hop across time. You can see all of this in the trailer released today for Outlander's final season, which spends a couple minutes revisiting the protagonists' complicated journeys. A glimpse of the new episodes towards the end of the footage reveal that Jamie is reading a book written by Claire's former husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies), which claims he is going to die in an upcoming battle. In season eight, the Frasers will undoubtedly do everything in their power to stop this from happening. In the season seven finale, Claire also discovered that a child she gave birth to back in season two might have survived (and wasn't stillborn, as she believed), which increases the stakes for the family as they resettle into their North Carolina home. Meanwhile, the previously released Outlander: Blood Of My Blood trailer already revealed its big twist: Claire's parents also journeyed back to the past. (Talk about a family problem.) After getting married during World War I in England and the birth of their daughter Claire, Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Henry (Jeremy Irvine) go on a holiday to Scotland and accidentally find themselves in 1714. There, they're separated and try to find each other, interacting with Ellen Mackenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) along the way. Ellen and Brian, who belong to warring clans, fall in love and will eventually go on to have a child: Jamie Fraser. In tandem with the show's SDCC panel, Starz released clips to introduce us to the two couples. Our big takeaway? Give the casting department a raise for bringing Corfield in as Claire's mom; she looks exactly like how Balfe did during Outlander's debut. Outlander: Blood Of My Blood will premiere with two episodes on August 8. It has already been renewed for season two. More from A.V.
