'KPop Demon Hunters 2' reportedly in development as Sony and Netflix negotiate sequel plans

Express Tribune8 hours ago
KPop Demon Hunters has dominated Netflix for nearly two months, holding the number one spot worldwide and breaking streaming and music chart records.
With such success, attention has now turned to a sequel, and major updates suggest KPop Demon Hunters 2 is already in motion.
According to Puck, Sony Pictures Animation is in early talks with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans to develop KPop Demon Hunters 2.
While Netflix distributes the film, Sony holds production rights, meaning the studio controls negotiations on whether the sequel moves forward.
Despite the first film's global success, Sony reportedly earned only around $20 million due to its deal with Netflix, making the financial arrangements of a second instalment a key focus. The original film cost $100 million to produce, and a follow-up is expected to be even more expensive, considering cast, singers and licensing.
Another update comes from the cast itself. Arden Cho, who voices Rumi, told Variety that she hopes the sequel will revisit Jinu, her character's love interest. In the first film, Jinu sacrificed himself to save Rumi and the world, though Cho hinted that his fate could be reimagined through the fantasy setting.
While no release window has been confirmed, the lengthy animation process means fans may wait several years, similar to the gaps between Sony's Spider-Verse films.

Kristen Bell and Adam Brody return in ‘Nobody Wants This' Season 2

Netflix has confirmed that Nobody Wants This will return for Season 2 on Oct. 23, with Kristen Bell and Adam Brody reprising their roles as Joanne and Noah. Season 1 of the romantic comedy followed the unlikely relationship between Joanne, an outspoken podcaster, and Noah, a newly single rabbi. Their whirlwind romance captured audiences, earning both Bell and Brody Golden Globe, SAG, and Critics Choice nominations. Brody went on to win the Critics Choice Award. The upcoming season, created by Erin Foster and executive produced by her sister Sara Foster, will explore what happens when Joanne and Noah attempt to build a future together. 'It's such an interesting part of every relationship,' Foster told Tudum, adding that Season 2 will examine how couples navigate milestones, families, and day-to-day realities. Alongside Bell and Brody, returning cast members include Justine Lupe, Timothy Simons, Jackie Tohn, and Michael Hitchcock. New additions feature Gossip Girl alum Leighton Meester, who plays Joanne's middle school nemesis Abby, now a mommy influencer. Other newcomers include Miles Fowler (Bottoms), Alex Karpovsky (Girls), and Arian Moayed (Succession). Behind the scenes, Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan, both veterans of Girls, have joined as executive producers and showrunners. Foster said she is 'lucky to be able to continue this story' and praised the expanded creative team for keeping the heart of the series intact. Season 1 ended with Noah choosing Joanne despite their cultural and religious differences. Season 2 will pick up as the couple faces the realities of blending their lives, families, and futures. Nobody Wants This Season 2 premieres Oct. 23 on Netflix, with Season 1 available to stream now.

Larson, Collins, Quaid and Golding unite for unexpected new comedy

Brie Larson, Lily Collins, Jack Quaid and Henry Golding will headline 'Close Personal Friends', a fresh comedy from Amazon MGM Studios set to begin filming in London this September. Directed by Jason Orley, best known for 'Big Time Adolescence' and frequent collaborations with Pete Davidson, the project promises a mix of celebrity satire and awkward humour. The film follows a couple on holiday in Santa Barbara who unexpectedly befriend a famous couple, leading to blurred boundaries, crossed personal lines and escalating comedic chaos. While much of the plot remains under wraps, the premise suggests a sharp, character-driven comedy centred on modern relationships and fame. Orley developed the concept with Isaac Aptaker, who later wrote the script. Aptaker is producing alongside his Walk-Up Company partner Elizabeth Berger, with Maximum Effort's Ashley Fox and Johnny Pariseau also attached. Orley serves as executive producer, reuniting with Aptaker and Berger after their 2022 romantic comedy 'I Want You Back'. Larson, an Academy Award winner for 'Room' and star of Marvel's 'Captain Marvel' films, recently earned multiple award nominations for her role in 'Lessons in Chemistry'. Quaid has appeared in action thrillers 'Novocaine' and 'Heads of State', while Collins continues to front Netflix's hit series 'Emily in Paris'. Golding, who rose to prominence in 'Crazy Rich Asians', is currently starring in Guy Ritchie's 'The Gentlemen' series for Netflix. Filming is set to bring together this eclectic ensemble under Orley's direction, with anticipation building for how the story's mix of romance, fame and comedic tension will play out on screen. Early industry chatter suggests the chemistry between the four leads could be one of the film's strongest draws, with Larson and Collins expected to anchor the dynamic. If the project delivers on its promise, 'Close Personal Friends' could be one of Amazon MGM's standout comedies of 2026, combining sharp writing, big-name talent and a premise ripe for awkward hilarity.
