Bake Off's Prue Leith gives blunt verdict on Meghan Markle after Netflix show

Independent14-03-2025

Prue Leith has shared her honest opinion on the Duchess of Sussex's new lifestyle Netflix show.
With Love, Meghan, which sees the former Suits actor invite celebrity friends to join her while flower arranging and making cocktails among other domestic duties, has been panned by critics, with viewers echoing their dissatisfaction.
Bake Off judge Leith appeared on Good Morning Britain alongside her husband John Playfair to discuss their new show Cotswold Kitchen, when hosts Kate Garraway and Rob Rinder asked if she had watched Meghan's programme.
'No – I've only read about it but I honestly wouldn't watch it,' she replied. 'I'm not a Meghan Markle fan. All that touchy-feely, mindfulness, endless worrying about what creams you put on your hands.'
She continued: 'I just think there's more to life than how you look and how your friends think of you,' adding, 'I've probably alienated half my fans.'
Comedian Katherine Ryan recently gave a scathing review of the series, saying on her podcast, Telling Everybody Everything: 'I liked Meghan Markle. I was rooting for Meghan Markle... though she is very Hollywood – even for me – and I don't like that in people.'
The comedian continued: 'She said on her new Netflix show that they ate TV dinners growing up. But then in an old interview, she was like, 'we would eat farm fresh'. Her whole act just seems very manicured and very forced.'
The Independent Katie Rosseinsky gave the show a one-star review, calling it 'queasy and exhausting'.
She wrote: 'With Love feels like a millennial blog come to life; it's the TV version of The Tig, the website that Meghan launched and ran in her pre-royal, jobbing actor days, filmed with all the soft-filtered gloss of a Center Parcs advert.'
The Duke of Sussex makes just one appearance at the end of the final episode when he joins Meghan, her mother Doria Ragland and friends for an outdoor celebratory brunch.
The Sussexes, who signed a multimillion-pound deal with Netflix in 2020, have previously put out the outspoken Harry & Meghan documentary, which features accusations against the royal family, and sport show Polo.
Meghan and Harry were bestowed the Sussex title by the late Queen Elizabeth II on their wedding day in 2018.
Although the couple were told they could no longer use their HRH titles after they stepped down from being working royals, they have still opted to use Sussex as their surname.
The second season of With Love, Meghan is coming in the autumn, and has already finished filming, according to Netflix. She has also announced plans for a new podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, which will debut on 8 April and explore her experiences as an entrepreneur alongside other women in business.

Royal fans speculate they know who joined Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on their Disneyland trip - and it's the 'best friend' thought to have 'vanished' from their lives

Royal fans have speculated they know who joined Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on their Disneyland trip - and it's someone thought to have 'vanished' from their lives. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, and her husband, 40, recently enjoyed a family trip to the 'Happiest Place On Earth' with their children Archie, seven, and Lilibet, four. Following their visit, Meghan shared a happy video montage to her Instagram account, as the family enjoyed the thrilling rides, met Disney characters and spent quality time together. In several pictures, Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lili were all in the pictures - meaning the photographs must have been taken by an unnamed cameraman. Another snap showed Harry and Meghan screaming with joy on the Space Mountain rollercoaster. In this photo, and in another on the Cars Land ride, Meghan had obscured those sitting behind her by using black heart emojis to cover their faces. Nonetheless, eagle-eyed royal fans were soon convinced they'd uncovered the identity of the Sussexes' mysterious companion. 'Is that Markus Anderson behind her?' one wrote on Twitter, referring to the Soho House mogul who helped matchmake the couple more then eight years ago. Another speculated: 'I think Markus Anderson was with them so he was probably took the photos,' while a third added: 'Markus Anderson from Soho House is in the back. This guy is always with Meghan. lol.' Others wrote: 'It was Marcus Anderson taking the pics' and 'I think it was Marcus Anderson!' MailOnline has reached out to representatives for the Sussexes for comment. Anderson is widely credited with helping the couple's romance flourish in its early days and has been by Meghan's side for many years. He was with her when she made her first public outing with Harry at the Invictus Games in 2017. He also acted as her 'bouncer' as she made her way through the drones of photographers outside a New York hotel for her baby shower in 2019 - meaning it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he could have taken on another 'security' style role in accompanying the family to Disneyland. However, although he was pictured with Prince Harry on a visit to Soho House in Austin in March 2024, more recently he was said to have 'vanished' from their inner circle. This March, a friend of Anderson told the Mail that his bond with Meghan 'may' not be as tight as it once was. This was put down to Anderson's extremely busy professional life as an executive at Soho House, which means he travels 'almost constantly.' The private members club now has 42 outposts around the globe. Notably, Anderson did not appear in the first season of her Netflix cookery show, With Love, Meghan, and is not believed to be lined up for season two. His friend admitted: 'He just really is not comfortable in the spotlight... it's not his thing.' The last time he and Meghan were spotted together was at a baby shower for a mutual friend in December. And before that, he hadn't been pictured with her in years. But once, Markus was the friend that the Duchess of Sussex couldn't be without. While Meghan and Harry are widely believed to have first met on a blind date in London set up by designer Misha Nonoo, it was in Canada – and more specifically at Markus' Soho House – that their love blossomed. He reportedly arranged for the couple to meet secretly in private rooms at the club, and helped them escape on romantic weekend getaways together. As several photos were taken from behind, people suspected that Anderson was the Sussexes' photographer for the day The consultant has been dubbed as the 'second most important man in her life.' The Canadian-born businessman arranged Meghan's low-key bachelorette weekend at Soho Farmhouse, in the Cotswolds. On his birthday in August 2016, Meghan wrote in a celebratory post on Instagram: 'What would I do without you, my loving, supportive, and endlessly fun friend? I know what... I would be bored, and life would be infinitely less interesting. I love you SO much.' Meghan even referred to Markus as 'uncle' to her two dogs Guy and Bogart, and was photographed on a lavish vacation with him in Madrid in 2016. On Friday, the mother-of-two shared a montage from the two-day Disneyland vacation as the family had a blast on numerous rides and indulged in yummy treats. One snippet showed both Lilibet and Archie getting the chance to meet Disney princess Elsa from Frozen. Meghan held her children's hands as they slowly walked over to take pictures with the character in a sweet moment. The Duchess of Sussex uploaded a new Instagram post that included special moments from their visit to the Happiest Place on Earth to celebrate Lilibet's fourth birthday Meghan and Harry's kids also had fun on some rides at the amusement park such as Dumbo the Flying Elephant and the Cars ride. The couple - who tied the knot in 2018 - were spotted having a blast of their own as they sat at the front while on Space Mountain together. One short reel included in the post was taken as the family-of-four excitedly explored Disneyland and also visited the Star Wars troopers. Harry flashed a cheerful smile as he turned towards the camera while sitting next to Lilibet on another ride. At one point, Markle and her family were also seen sporting matching Mickey and Minnie Mouse hats on top of their heads. They later built up an appetite and one picture was taken to show a pile of corndogs and pickles on a table. Lilibet also received a Little Mermaid-themed cake that was covered in hues of blue sugary frosting while 'Happy Birthday Lili' was written in pink icing. The Instagram post also had a sweet family photo as they posed outside with a small river behind them. In the caption, Meghan penned to her 3.6 million followers: 'Thank you @disneyland for giving our family two days of pure joy!' On Wednesday last week, Markle jumped to her main Instagram page to share a rare photo of herself with daughter Lilibet to celebrate her birthday which took place on June 4. One short reel included in the post was taken as the family-of-four excitedly explored Disneyland and also visited the Star Wars troopers In the black and white image, the actress could be seen holding her daughter as they enjoyed a boat ride on the water. She also wrote, 'Happy birthday to our beautiful girl! Four years ago today she came into our lives - and each day is brighter and better because of it. Thanks to all of those sending love and celebrating her special day!' In a separate post, Meghan uploaded a snap of her husband Harry gently holding Lilibet when she was a newborn. Another picture was taken a couple years later as the pair ran along a dirt path at a scenic tropical location. 'The sweetest bond to watch unfold. Daddy's little girl and favorite adventurer. Happy birthday Lili!' Meghan typed out. She also shared a throwback reel of herself twerking to help induce labor ahead of Lilibet's birth - and the clip went viral last week. Meghan could be seen wearing a black dress as she showed off dance moves along with Prince Harry. 'Four years ago today, this also happened,' she began to explain in the caption. 'Both of our children were a week past their due dates… so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work - there was only one thing left to do!' Meghan and Prince Harry reside in a Montecito home with Archie and Lilibet - and the Suits alum has previously opened up about their family life. During an interview with People a few months earlier in March, Markle reflected on how they go about each day with 'normalcy.' 'Once you know us, I think you want us to have the same normalcy as parents and for our children as they do, despite however unique our situation is,' she explained to the outlet. 'We go to a lot of dinners, and not just in people's homes or private rooms; we just go into the restaurant. I really love that we can just have fun.' She has been keeping busy and back in March, her Netflix series With Love, Meghan premiered and has also been renewed for a second season. Later this month, Markle will also make an appearance at the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County's Night of Wonder event on Saturday, June 14. It is not known if Prince Harry will also attend with Meghan - but the ball will take place on the same day as Trooping the Colour.

Meghan's theme park snap proves she is a cosplay Diana… the contrast between the two couldn't be more different

PRINCESS Diana was the world's first influencer. What she wore, women followed (only last year one of her dresses sold at auction for £900,000), what she championed, we believed, and how she exercised — the gym — made it acceptable for non-sportswomen to lift weights. 7 7 7 Now, with a newly bolstered PR team behind her, Meghan Markle is attempting to follow in her late mother-in-law's size 7s. Last week Meg's ruthless Diana cosplay came to a head. The privacy-loving star, who bravely fled to sun-kissed California to escape pubic scrutiny, posted a series of Instagram posts, documenting her private family's trip to secluded Disneyland for daughter Lilibet's fourth birthday. One photo recreated one of Diana's most famous, and endearing, pics — that of her getting soaked on Thorpe Park's Log Flume in the Nineties It is just the latest in what appears to be a concerted, some might say cynical, Diana-inspired publicity drive. Facing an uphill battle in her bid to become the People's (excommunicated) Princess, over the past few months Meghan has gone into overdrive with her comms team. Indeed, she now has enough sycophantic staff to field a football team. Last month, Forbes reported the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had added an entire PR agency, Method Communications, to their roster, and appointed a new director of comms. It comes weeks after grandiose Meghan appointed a chief of staff, as if she were operating out of the White House, not Disney. She also has spokespeople based in both London and LA. It is hardly a coincidence, then, that her latest push for global impact has seen her mirroring the late, great Princess Di. (A woman who, TBF, I believe would have adored Meghan.) Meghan Markle Expands As Ever: From Lifestyle Brand to Hospitality Empire Meg has long worn her priceless Cartier Tank watch — a gift from Harry — but in February the cosplaying really began. First came a near-identical purple Midwestern college sweatshirt, and then more recently the feverish Insta activity. Last week her widely-debated, labour-inducing hospital twerk alongside hoody-wearing Harry could be compared to ballet-loving Diana's infamous 1985 dance with Wayne Sleep. Just as Diana's twirls made global headlines — infuriating then husband Charles at the same time — so Meghan's slut-dropping divided royal fans. Unquestionably the American actress, who appears to have put her philanthropic efforts on the back burner, is now an influencer. She reportedly plans to bring out a nice rose soon. Meghan's Oprah was Diana's Martin Bashir — except the latter was tricked into going on national television to tell all. Meghan hopped on that garden wicker chair quicker than you can say 'Mickey Mouse'. Single-handedly reversed public opinion While Diana certainly courted the Press at times, she also, certainly in the case of her 1997 landmine walk, put herself on the front line to do good. She shook the hands of Aids patients at a time when people were cruelly demonising those with HIV, and single-handedly reversed public opinion. In contrast, Meghan and Harry preach about climate change and then hop on a pal's private jet. Meghan bemoans socio-economic inequality while living in a 16-bathroomed Montecito mansion, and wearing Oscar de la Renta. She now even gets a percentage of profits made from the wares she flogged. The other problem is Meghan, who has now become a mononym — putting herself in the same category as, say Madonna, Adele and Beyonce — has 3.7million Instagram followers. More supporters Madonna, Adele and Beyonce have 20million, 58million and 311million followers respectively. Vicky Pattison (5.4million), Ekin Su Culculoglu (4.2million) and Maura Higgins (4.1million) all have more supporters than Suits' most famous export. In the words of one royalist on X: 'You wanted the crown without the class. You wanted the fame without the responsibility. 'Don't cry for respect when you're out here pimping your title & twerking for clicks like a fame-hungry influencer with delusions of grandeur. 'Now all that's left is a royal mess in heels, still trying to play duchess while behaving like an influencer on a bachelorette trip.' Quite. A PETITION has started to remove a madman/woman from TikTok. A trans woman, who now goes by the name of Lily Tino, is infamous for her videos in which she tried to get misgendered in public in order to shame restaurant staff. Now she has started taking selfies in women's bathrooms, rating them out of ten. When 99.9 per cent of trans people are kind, normal and decent, and just trying to live quiet lives, it's attention-seeking idiots like this who let down their community. BUTTER BETTER BUTTER should sue its old PR company. For years it's been maligned as some sort of short-cut to obesity, and a one-way street to Heart Attack City. Margarines like Utterly Butterly and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter reigned supreme in the Nineties while olive oil has been the fat du jour for the past 20 years. Poor ol' butter has been demonised. Now, finally, a US study shows a teaspoon a day reduces your chances of getting both heart disease and type 2 diabetes. TBF, TikTokkers – and those on the carnivore or animal diets – have been waxing lyrical about the benefits for years. There's even a whole raft of extreme influencers who eat a tub of butter daily, documenting their 'journeys'. Go check one out if you want to feel mildly sick. A GOOD CALL ON PHONES IN last week's column I bemoaned my terrible screen time, and warned that mobile phone addiction would be the biggest epidemic to hit Generations Z and Alpha unless more action is taken now to protect young people. Loads of you wrote in, sharing your own concerns. Now, a coalition of 21 schools, nurseries and colleges in London has written to families, urging parents to reduce their own – and their kids' – screen times. The letter, sent to the families of more than 11,000 children, is an unprecedented intervention – but a necessary one. Now the Government must step up, too. BADDIE TOM IS GOODIE FINALLY, some common sense from a Harry Potter former child star. Eminently likeable Tom Felton, who played baddie Draco Malfoy, has refused to slam JK Rowling. 7 Refusing to bite the hand that fed him – making him a millionaire global movie star in the process – he insisted her views on gender identity did not 'affect' him. 'The only thing I always remind myself is that I've been lucky enough to travel the world,' he told Variety. 'Here I am in New York, and I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter, and she's responsible for that. So I'm incredibly grateful.' Take note, kids. LEFT IN FIX BY SCAM YOU never think it's going to happen to you, until it happens to you. Yes, dear reader, watching countless Netflix documentaries and ITV dramas about silly men and women getting taken for a ride I appear to have been taken for a ride. 7 A couple of weeks ago my key got jammed in my lock and I googled a locksmith to come out and fix it. He arrived in an unmarked car, and proceeded to as if 'I rented or owned' and 'lived alone', and then told me that, unfortunately, as bad luck would have it, I had an exceptionally complicated lock. Then, £1,117 later, the f***er left. I had a little cry. The company, for those interested, was called Masterit. A quick Google search would have told me they have unanimously terrible reviews online, and have apparently exploited countless other poor/stupid souls. Obviously they won't now respond to emails or calls, and my insurance company will only pay out £200. I feel like a fool. HONESTLY, I PREFERRED THE ORIGINAL 7 7
